How To Fix iPhone Or iPad Wi-Fi Connectivity Issues After Upgrading To iOS 4.3.3

iOS 4.3.3

According to ReadWriteWeb, iPhone and iPad users are reporting Wi-Fi connectivity issues after upgrading iOS 4.3.3 that was released by Apple last week to fix the location tracking bug.

As RWW points out, when iPad 1 was launched last year, users had reported similar Wi-Fi connectivity issues but this time it looks like it is also affecting iPhone users.

Sarah Perez of RWW explains the issue she faced after upgrading to the latest iOS software update:

After updating my iPad to iOS version 4.3.3, I discovered this problem had again resurfaced, but it was even worse than before. My connection wouldn’t just drop after the iPad went to sleep, as it had in the past, it would lose the connection when I was actively using the device, even while surfing the Web.

She reports that users are reporting the following Wi-FI connectivity issues on Apple’s discussion forum:

  • iPhone 4 says it connects to the Wi-Fi network, but the Wi-Fi icon never appears
  • Wi-Fi keeps disconnecting and reconnecting on its own
  • Can no longer use Wi-Fi at all unless within close proximity to the router
  • Can’t connect to Wi-Fi at all on device running 4.3.3, but devices running 4.3.1 have no trouble on same network
  • Wi-Fi won’t work, and resetting network settings doesn’t fix
  • Wi-Fi shows signal, but device can’t connect to the Internet

If you’re facing any of these issues, you can follow these tips to see if one of them resolves the issue until Apple releases an iOS software update to fix the issue:

Basic Troubleshooting:

  • Launch Settings app
  • Tap Wi-Fi
  • Turn Wi-Fi toggle off and then on again

If this doesn’t work then try to renew IP address, which may be required if you are using a larger wireless network.

Renew IP Address:

  • Launch Settings app
  • Tap on the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
  • Scroll down and tap on the Renew Lease button

If this doesn’t resolve the issue, try establishing a fresh connection with the Wi-Fi network by using the Forget This Network option. Please note that this will clear your current Wi-Fi network settings, including saved Wi-Fi passwords.

Forget This Network:

  • Launch Settings app
  • Tap on the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
  • Tap on the Forget This Network button
  • You will be prompted with a message that your iOS device will stop automatically joining this network. Tap on the Forget button.
  • Go back to the list of Wi-Fi networks, try to locate and join the Wi-Fi network again.

If this doesn’t help try restarting your iOS device.

Restart iOS Device:

  • Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until “slide to power off” slider appears. Slide your finger across the slider and iOS device will turn off after a few moments.
  • Turn iOS device on by pressing and holding the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.

If restarting your iOS device doesn’t resolve the problem then reset all network settings. Please note that this will clear your current cellular and Wi-Fi network settings, including saved networks, Wi-Fi passwords, and VPN settings.

Reset Network Settings:

  • Launch Settings app
  • Tap General
  • Scroll to the bottom of the screen and tap on Reset
  • Tap Reset Network Settings
  • When the device restarts, try to locate and join the Wi-Fi network again.

Please let us know if you’re facing any Wi-Fi connectivity issue after upgrading to iOS 4.3.3 and if any of the tips mentioned above helped in resolving the issue.

I’m noticing that not just the WiFi cuts out – so does my carrier connection. It will just simply disappear, state Searching, then reappear. This has happened while on the phone as well resulting in a call failed response.

  • Cooper

My biggest problem with this “upgrade” is that it seems to very quickly drain my iPhone 4 battery. Didn’t have this problem at all on any previous releases. Am I alone?

    • iRSX

Depending on which version you came from. 4.3 brought along with it some battery problems. Anyway, with the recently updated redsn0w and Snowbreeze 2.7.1 I find the problem to be not as severe.

  • Dustin

Wow. Good thing I’m still on 4.3.2. I noticed since they released iOS 4.3, a lot of problems are happening. Does Apple even test them before release? Cause we’ve been getting updates that just causes MORE problems to our iDevices.

    • ali

apple is not taking care of their products. first the iphone 4 atenna issue, then the ipad 2 screen bleeding and now software issues. apple has started create many problems which they cannot fix. just hope this doesnt happen with their macs

  • Mark

I haven’t had any issues. Maybe I just got lucky.

  • Hendrix

I don’t have any of the problems on ipad2 or iPhone 3GS maybe this is caused by jail break software like ultrasn0w or something as none of my devices need to be jb so I dont have any battery issues or wifi maybe doggie jailbreak software has anybody thought of that instead of just blaming apple what about the buggy hacks and cracks that are done to jail break the device what about the memory leaks etc that causes the idevice? Just a thought.

    • Cooper

I’m not blaming anyone because for all I know there is a setting that will fix it. My phone isn’t and has never been jailbroken or unlocked. I have no reason to do that.

  • John

I don’t have any issues on my iphone 4 running iOS 4.3.3 and jailbroken using redsnow 9.6rc16. Signal, wifi and battery are all functioning as normal.

    • GeO

Im fully updated and jailbroken with a ton of cydia apps and my I-4 is just fine. No wifi issues or signal. Maybe people who are suffering these issues should just do a clean restore and then go from there. Its a pain but it should work.

  • Kwopau

Don’t have this issue on my iphone 4 at all. I’m on 4.3.3

  • Lee

I first had issue on 3g network not working after updated to 4.3.3 then I JB my i4 using redsnow 9.6rc16 and I have no problems on 3g networking and wi-fi aso but, there is a signal bar dropped 1 line even with ultrasnow 1.2.3 installed.

  • iRSX

JB’ed. No problem with WiFi or 2G connection here. I don’t use 3G because it’s a drain on battery. I also don’t have a data plan cuz there’s WiFi everywhere I go except when I’m driving.

  • Jailbroken and tweaked up, no problem at all. Using at least 5 different wi-fi networks every day. Neither had problems using data or 3G networks. I recommend just one thing: after every update do “reset network settings” it will help you preventing network problems and battery draining. I test several iPhones every week and this method always helped me.

  • The only issue I have is when 3G tuns on, signal bar drops 1 bar, I do not have ultrasn0w (factory unlocked)

    • fas

Where did the question for unlock come for the ipad?

  • Modi

I have had this problem with the iPad since going to WPA security on my router on all v4 versions. Was never an issue with TKIP.

Boss Pref -> WiFi off -> WiFi on. Second nature at this point.

  • Fyta

Well, I am on iPhone 3GS, with iOS 4.3.3, jailbroken. I have been seeing strange issues this week since I updated from 4.2.1 this past weekend.

I am not getting notifications properly. Seems mainly when I have not just recently used the app. Ping chat for instance, and google voice. I always got my notifications for ping chat before the update.

Also, I noticed that the request to join wi-fi network is not coming up all the time like it used too. For instance, at work, we have private wi-fi which my phone would request quite often to join. After the update, it hasn’t been asking. (Yes, the setting to ask to join networks is still on).

Lastly, the find my iphone program doesnt seem to find my iphone, except when I am at home. Not sure why, because if I open maps, it find my location fine. But the find my iphone service cant seem to reach my iphone; for location or to send a message to it.

  • I4 4.3.3 issues

I have signal, battery, wifi and 3G connection issue after I upgrade to 4.3.3. I have been using same jailbreak tool and tweeks that I’m using. I never had these issues. I’m going to restore the phone without backup and jailbreak to check if the issues still exist.

  • Shannon

Wow. Definitely not updating to 4.3.3

  • where the ipad 2 jaibreak at that all we need

  • Jason

i’ve been having this problem too, but with me its not just wifi is ANY connection. It will say no signal when i know i’m in a good service area. I ended up downgrading back to 4.2.1 just to avoid this issue

  • yianni

downloaded version 4.3.3. for my iphone 3g now my phone wont recognize passwords for various apps like online banking or for certain wi fi spots. also some buttons seem sluggish in response to touch.

  • christine

been having the same problem as well.. cannot connect to the internet after upgrading to the latest version… it always gives me 169… ip address… apple told me to restore it using itunes which I just did and it did not work… need help!

  • masiq

I follow all of those fixes but my iPad 2 iOS 4.3.3 still can’t connect to my Airport. now my iDevice becomes a photo slideviewer. any helps appreciated 🙁

    • Gustavo

Upgrade your iPad’s IOS to 4.3.5 version, is more stable and reliable than previous versions.

  • BigFan

I have Wi-fi connection problem after upgrading 3GS from 4.0.1 to 4.3.3. I tried all of the above solutions but none worked. Wi-fi worked fine before upgrade.

But for some reason after I changed my wireless router password it works now.

    • Dan

I had this problem on my 3Gs, tried everything to resolve it and have finaly succeeded.

      I bought a 4s 😉

  • KR

the families got two I4 , ipod touch 3g and ipad all JB and on 4.3.3 with no issues? I wonder if its a itunes/phone connectivity issue? I sinc with mac computer

  • Valor

Experiencing these issues on 4.3.3 jailbreak, only for some routers. Bummer.

My Mac works fine on the same networks my iPhone has problems with.

  • stosine

i have iphone 3g and my wifi is not working though I’m in nigeria and we don’t have iphone service. here.

  • Katie

I have tried all the about solutions and still no joy! It was working perfectly on 4.3.3 until about a month ago, now I cannot hold a wifi connection at all! So frustrating!!

  • R

My ipad 1 has never worked, before or after all ios upgrades. These tips don’t help at all. I love and hate my ipad. I have to turn wifi off and back on about 3 times per hour. It doesn’t need to go to sleep to lose connection (while showing full 3 wifi bars). I have a belkin N+ router on N-only. I also gave up on my iphones a year ago. I leave wifi turned off and use 3G only. Maybe i’ll finally try an airport extreme and waste money. 🙁 or how about android 😮 ! I’m getting really fed up with these unusable awesome products! Joder!!!

  • keep share…
    thanks very much

  • Gustavo

IOS 4.3.3 works very well in my iPad2 but it did not work fine on my iPhone 3GS, I had issues with 3G data and carrier access, finally I had to return to version 4.2.1 in my iPhone and since the everything works OK, thought versión 4.3.5 is more stable for iPad also.

  • Ema

  • Technically Inept

okay, so maybe its something I did, but im on iPhone 4, bb 1.59.00, (recently upgraded io.s 4.3.3 using Sn0wbreeze 2.7.1) and I can’t get any connection with the internet (3g/edge or wireless!) also i dont have an option for facetime? (under settings>phone) did i screw up something with the ispw.

    any ideas???

ps. this was a downgrade from 5.0.1 (shsh saved)

  • James

Ok so I previously had 4.3.3 and I jailbroke it. Then I tried unlocking with snowbreeze with iPad baseband (6.15.00). Unlock never worked but I never had problems with connectivity. I somehow “accidentally” upgraded to Ios5 and bricked my phone in the process. Somehow managed to install 4.3.3 again and BAM here I am, wifi and battery drainage and all. PLEASE tell me there’s a fix or a patch or something. I have tried all the steps listed so far (switch off wifi; forget network; etc)

    • jennifer

Me too, did you ever hear of a solution?

  • nj

    hi all

my ipod wifi was hanging ….
i done all setting/resetting as above , but no use

then i found the date/time was not correct it was infact 1970, i corrected it and wifi starts working again

  • Mel

Yay! My iptime wifi was not working before but after using ‘Forget This Network’ method, it now connects to my wifi! Thanks for the help! ReAlLy ApPrEciAte it!! <3

  • jennifer

Before reading this article i tried every solution listed above. getting these suggestions from other people from other sites. I have an original ipad and a iphone4 verizon. My husband has the iphone 4s and the ipad2. He has the same problems. Internet connection constantly lost. Never had the problem before, then it just started up a few months ago. It’s soo frustrating. You purchase something with all these things it’s supposed to do, and it doesn’t. It would be like buying a washer machine that doesn’t wash the clothes. What do I do? How do I get my apple toys working again? My son’s Kindle Fire doesn’t do it. My laptop doesn’t disconnect every five seconds like my ipad and iphone. Why can’t I find the answer on apple support either? I am pretty sure they brought out new software, 5 point something I think it is and I thought for sure it would fix it, but no way. I still have the problems.

  • Stephanie

I just bought a iphone 3 and the second im 10 feet away from my router my connection is gone. im getting upset!! someone plz help!

  • James

Hey guys I hope this helps!! I did everything on this page as well as “solutions” on other websites. All I know is that after following these instructions, getting no result, and turning off my auto brightness, I ACCIDENTALLY switched into airplane mode, so I turned airplane mode off. All Of a sudden my wifi works!! I hope this works for Everybody, let me know!

Ps I have no carrier subscription, I only use wifi, so I’m not sure of it solves any carrier issues. Good luck!!

  • WanThing

I have tried to reset all network setting, yet still not able to connect to wifi… any advice?
My laptop has no problem to connect to Wifi.
