New Cases Indicate iPhone 5 Will Be Thinner, Longer And Wider

iPhone 5 launch in September

The iPhone 5 rumor mill is working overtime. This time, folks at 9 to 5 Mac have published images of what they claim are iPhone 5 cases.

The purported iPhone 5 cases suggest that Apple’s next generation iPhone will be longer and wider than the iPhone 4.

9 to 5 Mac report:

Our new images are clear and there are appears to be a slight – not major – tear drop in the design. The case goes thick to thin from top to bottom. In addition, the sources who provided us with these two new cases have shared some dimensions. According to them, the case is 5 inches tall and 2.8 inches wide. These are tight cases so the iPhone 5 dimensions should only be a few millimeters smaller than those numbers. For comparison, the iPhone 4 is 4.5 inches tall and 2.31 inches wide.

If the purported iPhone 5 cases turn out to be the real deal, then it means:

  • iPhone 5 will be thinner.
  • iPhone 5 will be longer and wider (5 inches tall and 2.8 inches wide) than iPhone 4 (4.5 inches tall and 2.31 inches wide).
  • The fifth generation iPhone will get a slight tear drop design.
  • The mute switch will be moved to the opposite edge of the iPhone.

It needs to be seen how Apple plans to handle the increase in screen size if it ends up launching an iPhone with a larger screen.

A MacRumors forum member has created an iPhone 5 mockup based on the purported cases:

What do you think about the possibility of these design changes in the next generation iPhone? Let us know in the comments.
