How To Jailbreak iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS Running iOS 5 Using Redsn0w [Updated]

Jailbreak iPod Touch On iOS 4.2.1 Redsn0w

Apple released iOS 5 few hours back, which includes more than 200 features for iPhoneiPad and iPod Touch users such as revamped Notification system with Notification CenteriMessagePC Free, Wi-Fi Sync, Newsstand, Reminders, deep Twitter integration and lots more. As we reported earlier, it is is possible to jailbreak iOS 5 using Redsn0w and Sn0wbreeze.

The video tutorial after the break will give you step-by-step instruction on how to jailbreak iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS using Redsn0w for iOS 5.

Here are some important points to note before you proceed.

  • This guide is meant for iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS users only. iPad users can checkout the step-by-step guide at this link and iPod touch users can checkout the step-by-step guide at this link.
  • Please go through our latest status update on jailbreaking iOS 5 to figure out if you should jailbreak iOS 5.
  • Redsn0w 0.9.9b4 only supports a tethered jailbreak, which means that you need to connect your iOS device to the computer on every reboot.
  • If you want to unlock your iPhone then please don't use this guide as Redsn0w doesn't preserve baseband. You should wait for Dev team to release a new version of Redsn0w, which is expected to include the PwnageTool functionality or use Snowbreeze for Windows.
  • Please note that jailbreaking your iPhone may void your warranty and hence proceed with caution and at your own risk.
  • Please do not forget to backup your iPhone before you proceed. You can refer to this post for instructions on how to backup your iPhone.
  • If you've jailbroken your iPhone then you can use jailbreak apps such as AptBackupPkgBackup or xBackup from Cydia to take a backup of all the jailbreak apps and tweaks so you can reinstall them easily after successfully jailbreaking your iPhone rather then installing them individually. However, since you're moving from iOS 4.x to iOS 5, it may be a good idea to reinstall the jailbreak apps to avoid compatibility issues.
  • After the jailbreaking process is complete, do not forget to checkout our article on tips to keep your iPhone secure.
  • Please ensure you are running latest version of iTunes i.e. iTunes 10.5 or later.
  • Known issue: iBooks keeps crashing after jailbreaking iPhone using this method. Dev team is working hard to fix the issue.

We want to reiterate that if you want to unlock your iPhone then you shouldn't use this guide as Redsn0w doesn't preserve baseband.

Troubleshooting:

How to fix the White/Blank Cydia icon issue:

If you notice the white Cydia icon (which fails to launch) after successfully jailbreaking your iPhone. Then follow these steps to fix the issue.

  • Launch Redsn0w again.
  • Click on Extras and then click on Just Boot from the list of options.
  • You will now be prompted to plug your iPhone to the computer and switch it off. Follow the instructions in the correct sequence and click on 'Next' to move to the next screen:
  • You will now need to put your iPhone into the DFU mode. Redsn0w will take you through the necessary steps:
    • Hold the Power button on iPhone down for 3 seconds.
    • Now simultaneously hold the iPhone and keep the two buttons pressed for 10 seconds.
    • Now release the Power button while keeping the Home button pressed until Redsn0w detects the device.
  • Your device will reboot and you will see the Pwnage icon on your iPhone's screen for few minutes.
  • After your iPhone is successfully rebooted, you will see the regular Cydia icon (brown). You should now be able to launch Cydia without any issue.

Please don't forget to let us know how it goes in the comments.

Update 2: Download link for Redns0w has been updated with the latest version - Redsn0w 0.9.9 beta 7.

  4. Jim R says:

Get rid of the video and put back up the actual listed instructions on how to jail break the iPhone.

  5. Jim R says:

Horrible instructions in the video. The DFU mode doesn’t wait to get the IPSW selected.

  6. Jim R says:

You have to select your IPSW file first THEN put it into DFU mode. That’s not what the video says.

  7. Eze says:

The jailbreaking process stock in “uploading second stage”. No more from this point. I can’t finish my jailbreaking, some suggestions?

  8. Jim R says:

I’m stuck in a boot loop now. Really poorly devised instructions. I’m not new to jail breaking, but I always review instructions before doing it. Not providing enough detail in the video, and even glossing over the need to set up the IPSW before going into DFU mode likely has created this problem.

  9. Bill Hanks says:

The fix for Cydia works fine.

  10. nathanamerican says:

Fantastic. Good video. For Windows just download the first 2 links and instead of library on mac, look under downloads and the iphone ipsw should be there. Thanks uploader!

  11. jarred says:

i jailbroke my iphone 4 a few days ago but noticed when i do a tethered boot with out having my computer hooked to the internet it doesn’t work. does redsn0w require internet to verify something everytime you go to tether boot? sometimes i am in an area without internet access.

  12. cesar ruiz says:

i was wondering if any one knows how to jailbreak sprints iphone 4?

  13. Abhishek says:

I m on 4.3.5…..either have two options to downgrade ma phone to 4.3.3 n jailbreak it or to upgrade it to iOS 5 n then jailbreak it,as mentioned above…want everyone’s verdict on what to do???

  14. Sam says:

I couldn’t find the firmware file so I downloaded the correct one. I selected it as the IPSW file. How can I ensure that file replaces my current firmware file on my iphone once I jailbreak?

    • Sam says:

nevermind I realized I had to uncheck “hide hidden files” and was able to successfully jailbreak after. great video. thank you.

  15. Myomint says:

I have been trying to install Jailbreak (Cydia) for my i-phone using (ios5).
I have used the redsn0w 0.9.9b6 and follow the instructions accordingly.
    Successfully installed Cydia (brown).
But while I open this Cydia and get the Application from this Cydia, my phone was shut down and didn’t restart i-phone application.
All software had been missing out.
I had encountered this problem 2 times.
Now I am not dare to jailbreak for my IOS5.
Please If you have any idea and best advice for Jailbreak method, may I have your best suggestion?
    Thanks.
    Myomint

Does Anyone Jailbreak and unlock Iphone 4 with IOS5 please? and does the unlock works?

  20. Pauli says:

My iphone started out as a locked 5.0.1, baseband 5.16.05. I had to downgrade to iOS 4.1 in order to change my baseband to 6.15 to unlock the phone. I want to upgrade back to iOS 5.0. If I do, will my baseband get screwed up? And if I upgrade to 5.0, does anyone have a link that I can check out with guidelines on how to jailbreak 5.0 and unlock the phone again (as I’m suspecting it will get locked once I upgrade to 5.0)? Thanks, your help and advice is appreciated!

  21. TJ says:

i have iphone 3gs already jailbreak 4.1 and the firmware is 06.15.00. any new jailbreak i can update.

  22. Ed says:

    I have an iphone4 running iOS 5.
I want to jailbreak it to take advantage of otherwise restricted apps.
How do I do it? Would anyone be kind enough to post a step by step idiots guide.
I don’t know ( and neither do i care!) what any of the following mean: tethered, untethered, redsnow, blah blah.

    Cheers!
