SemiTether Updated To Fix Issues; Still In Beta; Will Be More Stable After Updated Mobile Substrate Is Released

Late last night, BigBoss released a new package on Cydia called SemiTether, which allows you to reboot your jailbroken iOS 5 device without the need to connect it to the computer.

However, BigBoss’s solution had some limitations and number of users reported issues after using it. BigBoss has released a new version of SemiTether to fix some of the issues.

BigBoss writes:

I updated to 0.7.9. This version will take about 90 seconds after it first boots up and then your device will respring again. This timing was the only way to get some of the launch daemons to properly relaunch.

BigBoss has mentioned that SemiTether 0.7.9 should fix issues for some of you where:

1) Device does not sync with itunes and only errors. Hopefully solved.
2) Device reboots after 2-3 minutes.

He also goes on to add:

Note, Saurik is working on an update to mobile substrate that will solve many of the issues with the semi-tether package. Hopefully this will be out in a day or two. At this time, we can finalize beta testing. I plan to hold further updates until after Saurik has released his mobile substrate update. Saurik’s updates will eliminate the need for the long 90 second respring on boot also.

This update was only tested on iphone 4. After saurik’s mobile substrate changes, more devices will be tested. Next updates coming in next 2-3 days.

Semi tethered mode will allow users, especially iPhone users who want to jailbreak their iPhone to at least use it for some of the basic functionalities of the iPhone, instead of the tethered mode where if you reboot the iPhone for any reason it is stuck at the Apple logo, until you don’t tether it to the computer and use Redsn0w’s Just Boot option. Here’s a summary of what you can and cannot do in semi tethered mode.

1) Can use phone, sms (text messages)
2) Can use every other stock app on iphone.
3) Cannot use mobile safari
4) Can use other appstore web browsers such as atomic web browser
5) Cannot use mail app. You could install a gmail app from appstore or such instead.
6) You cannot use any jailbreak tweak, app, cydia until you boot tethered.
7) While in the semitether booted state, you should not add a jailbreak ios5 notification such as sbsettings to notifications during this state or your device will be stuck in a respring loop until you get home to “boot tethered”.

Please also note that your jailbroken iOS 5 device in semi tethered mode will take 90 seconds to reboot.

SemiTether is currently available as beta so please proceed with caution or wait until Jay Freeman a.k.a saurik releases a new version of Mobile Substrate that will fix most of the issues and make it a lot more stable.

If you still want to give it a shot then checkout our post on How To Semi Untether Jailbreak iOS 5 Using SemiTether For iPhone, iPad And iPod Touch.

Please don’t forget to let us know how it goes in the comments.

I do not see any reason now for trying jb IPhone, all kinds of this progs only trying to kill stability of it and primary functions of phone. Sure if You have 2 or more iPhones you should try do it but if you have only one better stay jailed with good working phone 🙂
Personaly I’m waiting for unthetered, stable ver of it for install only Navigon all others apps are cheap and do not worth of crack.

    • Paradox

Another person who only jailbreaks to pirate apps. See above comment about doing it without a jailbreak.

      • Kitty

But this kind of install is’t free atm.

        • Paradox

Well your correct at that I can’t fault your opinion there.

Just an FYI, while I don’t advocate it’s use nor do I represent any one entity that offers thee services, I payed $10 to do this. A lot better than $99 from apple.

$10 was a fair price in my opinion. Some may offer this same service for more or less. The individual I worked with was very prompt, had many many twitters from people endorsing the individual and his services. He was also very good with answering emails and questions. Top notch customer service in my opinion for a one man show.

          iResign is a free download.

So … its all upto the individual .. I love having my iPhone customizable and love the jailbreaks on it, so it’s still on 4.X I may do the semi tether later today. I can live with the temporary loss of apps if it shuts off. I can’t live without a phone. So for now its a decent compromise…

Anywho .. until perfection comes out for iOS5 and we get our untether back with all the working cydia apps I do bid you a pleasant Cheers! and a god bless and god speed to the dev team wishing them the best o luck in getting us a solution soon.

            Hi Paradox,
Do you mind sharing where you bough the certificate ?

          • Paradox

@ Harry .. sorry for late reply … Tweet @uhelios

  • Fz

for sure i use jb for navigon only… but few tweaks in cyida are handy

    • JoHnNy bRaVo

I’m with you there mate… Since iOS5, the only reason I’ll need a JB now is for tomtom otherwise phone is perfect the way it is now 🙂

    • Nh

Backgrounder, sbsettings, ssh capabilities etc are all good (legal) reasons to jailbreak.

  • fas

Taking lot of time, still waiting!

  • Tom skall

Where’s the iPhone 4 unlock, David nicol said it best

  • JB

I just want a untethered jb. I’m waiting until that happens.

  • Mike

Me too – only a full unterhered jb is useable. I will wait until this will be available.
By the way, i buy apps which i use because all updates come directly. But… i like it to try apps with appsync.

    • Paradox

I agree. I pay for most of my apps if I like them and tried them first with app sync. There is only one program I currently NEED to “pirate” and thats skyscape. Its free, but all the medical resources you have to pay for. Now you can’t “pirate” them, but, they only license to one device. So I need jailbreaks to use UDID faker to copy the license from one device to the other. I payed over $300 in med resources for school, and I do need them on both my iPad and iPhone. I am not about to pay an additional $300 to do that. So yes, jail breaking at times is a necessity. At least for poor college students. When I am working again, then I will legit up and give them the money they are due for an excellent product.

      • Subzero

You are the kind of person who bends the rules in their favor and then turn around and tell someone how their wrong and condemn them for doing the same thing you’re doing. Your STEALING dude one way or the other, just because YOU feel that what you’re doing is “just” doesn’t make it right, just because YOU feel that you shouldn’t have to pay on this platform and that platform doesn’t make it right. Most PS3 and 360 games are the same does that mean I can walk up to the store cleric and say “hey man, I bought this on ps3 hand me a copy over for 360 now it’s my consumer right to have this game on all platforms without paying” pfft plz dude.

        • Paradox

According to apple’s licensing agreement for apps, a user who purchase an app for one of their devices should be able to use it on their other devices as long as it registered to the same iTunes account. These developers who are now using subscriptions on “free apps” are bypassing this licensing agreement using a loophole.

I never condoned anyone for pirating. I just called it what it is. 90% of the jailbreakers that jailbreak are doing it for one thing only … pirating. Its unto them if they want to do it or not. I am not judging them. I just choose to support good programers. If a company chooses to use a loophole to bypass apples licensing agreements, then its their choice. I can call the company on any given day and have the license transferred back and forth from phone to iPad, and back again. I can do that 20 times a day if I felt like it. I merely am saving their company and me the hassle. I own a license for their app on an iOS platform. I am running it on an iOS platform (the device does not represent the platform as the programming is the same). This is not the same as your PS3 – Xbox 360 example. Theres is no such licensing agreement between the two companies and the software is vastly different.

So … PLZ DUDE .. as you put it.

      • Stupid

If you paid the apps, just enter (change) you apple id and you get these legaly for free on your iPad!
You may use all your apps on ALL your devices!
        No need for jailbreak…
        I’m jailbroken for many reasons:
        – more icons (shrink, iconoclasm, 5 icon switcher)
        – sbsettings
        – folderenhancer
        – infinidock
        – mailenhancer
        – etc.
and testing apps (and then buy them in the store)

Hi, if anyone can please update me on this. Am using iPhone 3GS tether jailbreaked a while ago with 06.15.00 firmware and running iOS 4.2.1. Now my question is… I want to put iOS 5 in it, and am ok with the tethered jailbreak but will it be ok to unlock it coz I still have to use it as a normal phone especially to get 3G internet services. Am using windows 7 pc…if that will be needed to help me out. Thanks in advance.

  • Paradox

If you follow the directions to protect your baseband then yes. Here is the link for the unlock and unlock able basebands.

  • uzman

if a tethered jailbreak is installed, when i reboot and when i click “just boot” everytime will all the files dissapear? ie: all data such as apps and cydia apps be deleted?
and my cydia does not have SHSH iOS 5. only 4.1 and 4.3.5. can i still uodate to iOS 5 and jailbreak and unlock it?

  • Josh

Followed instruction exactly. Tested it out and now my Iphone 4 is stuck on the apple logo.
    What do I do now?

    please help

    • Paradox

Redsnow > Extras > just boot

      or try:

Redsnow > extras > recovery fix
if you need the recovery fix you may have to restart at square one with doing a fresh factory restore on it then jail breaking it again.
I was fortunate, everything worked out well the first time. I did get the white cydia, but per the instructions, doing the “just boot” fixed that. I purposefully have turned off (powered down) the phone too, and as stated turning it back on lead to loss of safari, cydia, and mail, but I was able to make phone calls without any problem. hooking it back up to redsnow and doing the just boot restored all those to full function ability without a hitch.

on a side note I tried installing iLock and that beat the hell out of it until I uninstalled it … should have read the compatible apps list in another post.

      • Josh

Thanks, the problem I was having was getting into DFU from the frozen apple logo but I figured it out. Simply skip one and start with step two.

  • luknwet

yes if you have a pc go on and download idetector and check if your iphone is an old bootloader and if it is go ahead and update it and be careful some people have mess up their sim reader it doesnt read sim so click deactivate in redsn0w

  • simonse

    hey guy,

could we talk about semitether again?!!

for me it’s intresting on with configuration the tool works.

in my case it doesn’t work:
    Iphone 4 IOS5 Factory-unlock (open)

    Installt Cydia apps:
Sbsettings (and required tweaks like Activator..etc.)
    Fake Operator
    Mobile Substrate
    and some NotificationCenter Addons

Any idea why SemiTether isn’t working?

    • Opyz

  • Sflil

  • Hawk

    Hello community,

I have a quick question regarding jail breaking stuff,
can an already jail broken and unlocked iphone 4 (with IOS 4.0.1 and baseband 1.59.00 running on it) be updated to lets say 4.3.3 with the ability to be jail broken and unlocked after ?

  • Lucas

    Of course man,

  • Lucas

I just want to know why to remove app sync at installing semitether, can I put it back again?

  • Damen

I don’t jb because I want free apps/games, it’s a nice bonus, after using iOS5, truly, Apple is still behind on many “useful” features. There’s 3 main reasons why I’ve jailbroken and I thought these were taken care of with the new iOS5, I was dead wrong, I wish I had not upgraded now and I can’t downgrade because I didn’t save my shsh blobs (my loss). Apple, you can learn from these 3 critical jb apps: LockInfo, Mail Enhancer and BiteSMS. If Iphones came stock with the features that these jb apps provided, I would of never even bothered jailbreaking.. period. Obviously the hardware is capable of these features, why Apple would lock us out of it I will never understand. Anyone who tells you that “these features” or “jailbreaking” would render your device unstable, BS. I also have a 3GS running 4.3.3 fully jailbroken with tweaked apps and it runs flawlessly. I got the Iphone4 and thought I could do the same but with a newer and faster processor and nicer screen, then I updated to iOS5. *sigh.

  • Joji

I think hackers are waiting for 5.0.1 update so that Apple wont patch the untethered Jailbreak, well thats my theory.

  • Janoob

I had jailbeaked my iphone 4 updated to ios5 and i installed one app from cydia, which prmpted to reboot the device. when i clicked on reeboot my iphone got hang on apple logo and still not restarting. please help me to sort this issue. even i tried to justreboot again from redsn0w but still its not going into the phone as it is stuck…… please check on this………………

  • iPhone 3gs

My iPhone 3GS is successfully jailbroken with untethered, but I have the problem with syncing. For few days everything was okey, but now iTunes deletes newly downloaded apps. I didn’t change any settings, and the same was with iOS 4.3.3, everything was ok for few months, and later it started to delete apps, but I was waiting for iOS 5 so I didn’t do anything to fix that. What it could be? Thank you.

  • nav

hey all, jus jailbreak my iphone 4 and its workin great. loaded with semitether too. but when it booted, im still able to use mobile safari, mail and sbsettings. has it been updated or am i missing something here? was hoping someone could answer my question.

  • dalogan72

Just waiting JB for iPhone 4S to get it. This can be a while or at least it seems to me. For the iPhone 4, until better options I think is better to stick at 4.3.3.

  • Noel

After impatiently waiting for the untethered jailbreak before updating my iPhone 4 to iOS, I finally gave in and did it when the semitether was released. I’m totally fine with the lack of functionality as long as I can still use my phone and stuff until I can get home to boot with my computer.

I thought everything went fine and dandy – I upgraded the iOS, did the jailbreak with the latest version of redsnow, installed the semitether app, and reinstalled just a few Cydia apps (nothing illegal – i’m not into that) and was pleased by how smoothly it was going. I had to respring a few times, but no reboots were necessary. Until one was, this afternoon. I rebooted, and surprise surprise, despite everything running nicely and semitether being installed with no problems, I got stuck on the Apple screen. Apparently I was never semitethered, I guess? I’ve tried rebooting several more times, removing and reinstalling semitether, and the same thing happened. Now, my iPhone is happily running on the tethered jailbreak, but it just makes me nervous to be possibly caught somewhere and not be able to make calls.

Any suggestions as to why this wouldn’t be working? I’d like to avoid doing a restore because it took me a ridiculous amount of time to install the iOS and upload and arrange all of my apps and icons. So if anyone has anything suggestions of things to try before I go that route, I’d really appreciate it. Thanks so much!

    • Vinil

Same problem here. after waiting for 20-30 mins, a stuck iphone spinner comes up .
      Please patch.
      Thank you very much

  • Vinil

I installed semitether and succesfully rebooted my ipod 4g many times. but when i installed appsync 5.0+ and installed applications through install0us, i rebooted but my ipod got stuck on the apple logo. Please patch this error.
