WhatsApp - one of the most popular messenger apps for iPhone in the App Store is now available for free.
We wonder if this has to do something with to do with the launch of iMessage - Apple's new messaging service for iOS devices yesterday, that came bundled with iOS 5.
One of the main advantages of the WhatsApp over iMessage is that it is cross-platform app that is available for iPhone, BlackBerry, Android and Nokia, unlike iMessage, which is limited to iOS.
WhatsApp was available for $0.99 before the price drop. Folks at WhatsApp has provided the following reasons for using their app instead of other messenger app:
* NO HIDDEN COST: Once you and your friends download the application, you can use it to chat as much as you want. Send a million messages a day to your friends for free! WhatsApp uses your Internet connection: 3G/EDGE or Wi-Fi when available.

* GROUP CHAT: Enjoy group conversations with your contacts.
* NO INTERNATIONAL CHARGES: Just like there is no added cost to send an international email, there is no cost to send WhatsApp messages internationally. Chat with your friends all over the world as long as they have WhatsApp Messenger installed and avoid those pesky international SMS costs.
* SAY NO TO PINS AND USERNAMES: Why even bother having to remember yet another PIN or username? WhatsApp works with your phone number, just like SMS would, and integrates flawlessly with your existing phone address book.

I’ve always had whatsapp, purely because sending photos etc is SO MUCH quicker than using the normal message app. Photos send almost instantly, where as the normal message app takes 4-5 minutes, if it goes at all!

This is kind of misleading. It’s only ‘free’ during the trial period after that it is $1.99/year according to their web site.

Its total bs that whatsapp is no longer a free app, if its a free messaging service. its now 0.99$ at the appstore. i am from south africa and don’t have a credit card, so its impossible for me to get any kind of messaging service besides Facebook.
this kind of thing makes me wish i still used a blackberry.
