Apple Confirms iOS 5.0.1 May Not Have Fixed All iPhone Battery Issues

Apple released iOS 5.0.1 yesterday, which in addition to bringing multitouch features to iPad 1 and fixing the iPad 2 smart cover security flaw also included a number of bugs that was affecting battery life for some users.

Based on comments from some of our readers it looks like the iOS software update hasn't resolved the battery issues for all the users.

AllThingsD reports that Apple has also acknowledged that though iOS 5.0.1 fixes many of the iPhone battery issues, there may still be a few problems that need troubleshooting.

Apple’s iOS 5.0.1 update evidently addressed some, but not all of the battery issues troubling iPhone users. In a statement issued moments ago, the company acknowledged there may still be a few problems that need troubleshooting. “The recent iOS software update addressed many of the battery issues that some customers experienced on their iOS 5 devices,” the company said in a statement given to AllThingsD. “We continue to investigate a few remaining issues.”

    • Tom says:

Lets all switch to android phones.

      • don't with to android says:

Do not i repeat do not switch the battery life on there devices suck so bad you be wishing you never thrashed on apple
trust me i was a android user before i got my iPhone

        • Will says:

Like all phones some have better battery life than others. I happen to have an Android phone and my battery life is great and actually lasts about 48 hours using the device constantly. I’m also sure that there are plenty of Android phones that DO have bad battery life. Just like apparently there are plenty of iPhone users that are ALSO complaining about battery life……

    • Bhushan says:

I Have iPhone 4, i have upgraded it to iOS 5.0.1 2 days back
and battery is draining like anything
earlier it was good for at least one day, now it doesnt even go for 12 hrs
in night only(all apps were closed), it came from 70% to 58% in just 6-7 hours idle time
is there any way to undo ios 5, i would like to go back to 4.2.3

    • Frank says:

I updated to 5.0.1 and last night at 11 i turned my iphone to airplane mode and closed all apps. when i woke at 6, 20% of my battery was gone. :(

  2. OGT says:

Apple 2 Fails! Another one, and your OUT!.. LoL
    I think is a Hardware issue…! Don’t you think?

  3. Randy says:

    I didn’t have a battery issue with my 4s until I
Updated my phone. Before the update I was getting 16-18 hours off a full charge. Now I’m having to charge twice a day to get 8 hours.
How do I go back to IoS 5?

    • Kimk69 says:

How could it be a hardware issue when
It’s happening on all the phones with
iOS 5. I have an iPhone 4 with ios 5
      Jailbroke with a preserved baseband
And at idle over night it drops about
10 to 12% where on the previous
iOS versions it didn’t drop at all or maybe 1 to 2%.

  4. helicopter says:

Battary life about the same and my Bluetooth sill not working, anyone else have the same problem

    • Majdi says:

Just do a restore as a new phone and do NOT RESTORE FROM BACKUP. I called apple and they recommended this and my battery life is way much better

  5. Anonymous says:

For me the battery got worse and also with the update Siri is not working properly.

    • Andy says:

Siri also doesn’t work for me, battery is worse than iPhone 4, I know as I run two phones (1 personal & 1 work) of which one is a 4 & the other a 4s, I try to use both phones as much as the other, at the moment I cannot get a full day out of the 4s & end up using my old 4 a lot more

      • Jordan2611 says:

Hi Andy do as Majdi says:
        “November 12, 2011 at 5:29 am
Just do a restore as a new phone and do NOT RESTORE FROM BACKUP. I called apple and they recommended this and my battery life is way much better”
Got a full 18 Hrs yest on my 4s…..Just do not restore your idevice from your Back-up….takes a lot longer to sync and choose all stuff again but hey!!! Its worth-it…Hope This Helps.
        Real thanks go to Majdi.
        :-D

  6. Carol says:

My 3gs still has battery issues. After iOS 5 i have to charge my phone multiple times a day and if I don’t charge it before it dies, I have to plu it into my computer for it to power up again. It’s really getting annoying now.Especially since the update was supposed to help my phone.

    • Baba says:

The only problem with that I need the phone contact, is there a way to just save my
      Contact only??

    • Jeremy says:

Same here Carol. I didn’t realize I had battery issues until ios5. I went to the Apple store and they say I have to replace my battery. My phone will shut off at any battery percentile if I do anything taxing.

  7. Mystic says:

My battery has improved. I can go a full day without charging now.

  8. Ricky says:

I have an iPhone 4 and this software update hasn’t resolved the battery issue!

  9. Alex says:

This update made my battery life worse then what it was

  10. Tom says:

Let’s just all return our apple iPhone 4s and get a refund. We all have at lease till the 14th of November 2011.

  11. NorGod says:

the only way to get a full time battery per day (24 hours) turn wifi, bluetooth, spotlight search, location off…. but if you wanr more than 24 hours.. turn notification and reduce the brightness when you dont need it…. im on IOS 5 and trust me… i just turn the wifi off and location off and reduce the brightness when i dont need it and i get 24 hours of battery… so.. learn how to use your iphone well…. dumbasses..

  12. j4nuS says:

i just hope it’s not a hardware issue and do a recall… we don’t have an apple store in our country and i don’t want to pay for shipping and have it shipped across the globe…

  13. Sayed says:

I,m having iPhone 4 and I don’t have battery issue but I had updated to ios 5.0.1 to inhance the battery but it affected the battery Consamtion to the down

  14. no name here says:

well if we turn everything off then why not go back to old Nokia phones from late 90′s
I still believe that the biggest issue is with not being able to turn off 3G, especially for those with spotty 3G coverage. since I got my 4Shit I’ve had more dropped, failed and missed calls than charlie sheen sex in the last six months and this is not a joke, so apple bring back the 3G option

  15. tangcahyadi says:

i aggree this is the hardware issue now the only solve the problem is apple recall iphone 4s change the new battery . but apple won’t do that it couse lost apple profit

    • Pacomac says:

I have the same issue with my iPhone 4 after upgrading to iOS5 so I am confident this IS a SOFTWARE issue only. My 4 and 4s manage around 24 hours where previously on iOS 4.3 I managed 48 hrs.

  16. DC says:

Battery levels stayed the same. Where the update screwed me was my contacts. If I don’t have the “+ 1″ format entered, the name of the contact doesn’t show up. Planning on restoring to factory settings.

  17. Zibby says:

My battery lose it’a power faster than before

  18. Demi bogart says:

Massive joke now, iPad 2 and iPhone 4s both running iOS 5.0.1, both extremely poor on battery as of both versions of ios5! Obviously a software issue as this is affecting all devices not just the 4S.

    Apple, sort it out!

  19. Kleinman says:

Ohh cool. İ am going back İOS 4. Welldone apple, good job.

  20. Jon says:

All fine here. I had issue with iOS 5 and my 3GS not syncing album art but genius tid me to plug into iTunes hold down power and home until it turned off. Then keep home key held in until it starts re-installing firmware. Then synced it back up. No complaints with OTA update I did over wifi. iPad got multitouch back too.
    Happy apple customer.
With battery life, many people don’t seem to be asking themselves, do I use my phone the exact same amount every day, use exactly the same functions???
Are they working in a 3G area when yesterday only could get 2G?
Too many factors to assess if it’s worse or better.

    If its flat… Charge it!!!!

  21. Bob says:

My iPhone battery life improved immensely after the update. I can almost go 2 days without charging now.

    • Mike says:

I guess you’re one of the lucky ones. Still no change in my battery life
and I still have the ‘usual suspects’ disabled.

  22. Brett says:

I still am. After 5 minutes of my phone being on the location where the motherboard is heads up immensely through the glass… I think I am going to buy a 4s… I have no choice now.

  23. fas says:

So iOS 5.0.2 is just around the corner.

  24. Andy K says:

Majdi has the fix in my opinion. See I have never had issues on my 4S and this likely because of my decision when I got it to clean house and start from a new phone. Like most I had been going from a restore point since the iPhone 3G. I feel there is iniate restoration of junk left with each subsequent restore that eventually lead to poor performance. My 4S has run superbly as a result!

  25. PsycoJuana says:

well my old iPhone4 out lasting my new 4S 4 to 1. battery life sucks !!!

  26. Dennis says:

On my part, the iOS 5.0.1 solved my problem when it comes to battery issue. The only issue that I have at the moment is, I can no longer downgrade to a lower version of iOS (5.0 / 4.3.X). Apple were able to block downgrading. Don’t upgrade to iOS 5.0.1 if you wanted to jailbreak your iDevice later.

  27. Bruised Apple says:

4s x 5.0.1= worse crappy battery, Siri rarely works. Those are the 2 only reasons I got the 4s. I’ve had every iPhone to date, and this one has more problems than any of them. I even has to have one 4s replaced because of the audio issue (dead silence when a call goes through because I can’t hear the person I called on the other end but they can hear me and vice versa) and no, I don’t want to turn off all the features just to extend my battery life “a little”. Whoever posted that earlier is an idiot. Why would you even buy an iPhone to begin with, moron?

These bugs need fixing. This is not a cheap phone, and we’re not even allowed to upgrade at will. My advice?
FIX THIS DAMN PHONE!! Most of us are loyal Apple customers. Make us happy dammit!!

  28. YN says:

I bet if rotten apple will recall iPHONE 4S, which I proudly bought last week.
It is ridiculous if I have to tun off the features to have the battery for the minimum requirements for smart phone. I am stupid to pay for it… You too!

  29. Hak says:

I have iPhone 4 with the new iOS 5.0.1.
    Location service off
    iCloud off
I am on 2G all the time with my WiFi on. Battery drains on front of my eyes while writing this comment. From 52 to 51. At the time I finish writing this it will become 50. I can sense the heat of the battery while writing this post. Maybe if I receive a phone call now the battery will become 49 since it is by now 50 ( I swear).

Apple, you really need to have a look at this issue the earliest or you will start losing the market share you already have!!!!!!!!

  30. Hak says:

    Maybe I should
    Turn notification off
    Location service off
    Wifi off
    ICloud off
    3G off
    Airplane mode ON
make the brightness to no bright
Switch of the phone and switch it on when I need to make a call or send SMS !!!!!!!!!

    Really disappointed !!!!

  31. Jason says:

I have a 3Gs, battery life has gotten a lot worse.
If I leave all services & G on, I can get about 5-6hrs before it dies.

I think I’m going to switch to Android.

  32. Bryanah says:

My last tweet was…Is it just me or do I still have to charge my #iPhone  2+ times a day after the iOS 5.0.1 update..? (obviously it isn’t just me)

  33. Ryan says:

I’ve never really worried too much about the battery life of my phone… I purchased a Mophie Juice Pack for my 3G, and when i upgraded to the 4 i got one for it. Good case for the phone and when my battery starts running low, i flip the switch and the case charges my phone. They run between $75-$100… And yes i know not everyone can afford that, blah blah blah…. It’s a solution, not a perfect one, but a good one.

I’ve charged iphone 4 ios 4.2 to 100% and iphone 4s ios 5.0.1 to 100% and left overnight to see what is different. I left at 11pm and checked when woke up at 7:45am iphone4 battery 97%
iphone 4s battery 51%. I think there no coments
settings where similar on the both iphones

  35. Baloo says:

I Just Brought iPhone 4 White Auto -Update on iOS 5 My Battery kept draining fast. I charge full and using it around 4-8 hours around 50%. : ( Apple let us down.

  36. Ronnie says:

Amazing…just got 4s and since Thursday it has been working fine…then all of a sudden…batter drain. Had to recharge 2 times one one day.

  37. Daisy says:

Since the update, my battery dies even faster than before, even when I have closed my apps; dimmed the lighting; turned off wi-fi and Bluetooth, etc >:/

  38. Henryann1317 says:

Apple should immediately address this heat issue on iphone4S… I bought it a week ago and I experience this inconvenient heating… Battery loses it’s life when frequent heating occurs… Recall is a good option for apple before third party proves their defective IDevice.

  39. Khawar says:

I have just updated to 5.1 and thus is the most ridiculous and annoying update. The only reason I updated the software cuz it said it contains BATTERY ISSUES. In about 20 minutes from 100% I am now standing at 80%

Now they have to send us solar power charges cuz we need to keep that sh*t on charge all the time.

    SHAME ON U APPLE!
