Apple Releases iOS 5.0.1; Fixes Bugs Affecting Battery Life; iPad 2 Security Flaw, Adds Multitouch Gestures For iPad 1

Apple has just released iOS 5.0.1 (build number 9A405).

iOS 5.0.1 is available for iPhone 4SiPhone 4iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 4th generation, iPod Touch 3rd generation, iPad and iPad 2.

According to release notes iOS 5.0.1 includes the following the bug fixes and improvements:

  • Fixes bugs affecting battery life
  • Adds Multitasking Gestures for original iPad
  • Resolves bugs with Documents in the Cloud
  • Improves voice recognition for Australian users using dictation
  • Contains security improvements

iOS 5.0.1 also fixes the iPad 2 smart cover security flaw that was discovered in iOS 5. As we had reported a short while back, initial reports by developers who tested iOS 5.0.1 also indicate that iOS 5.0.1 has fixed the battery life issues.

It is currently not available via OTA update feature that was introduced in iOS 5.

Here are the iOS 5.0.1 direct download links.

Update 1:

MuscleNerd of the iPhone dev team has warned jailbreakers and unlockers to avoid upgrading to iOS 5.0.1. He just tweeted:

Jailbreakers and unlockers should avoid today’s 5.0.1 until a flow for downgrading to 5.0 is developed.

Update 2:

It looks like iOS 5.0.1 is now available via OTA as well.

As always, let us know how it goes.

  • Ryan

Nevermind. But why no OTA? I thought that was the point of iOS 5?

    • Krystian

      Hi Ryan

I have successfully performed update without using iTunes. Everything done on the phone.

    • dickhead

      • Eric

        • Eric

      • Eric

        *you’re

  • Krystian

I am performing update right now using only software update directly on my phone without connecting it to iTunes.

    • Jason

Yea my friend did his via OTA but mine will not work that way for some reason.

  • Angel

It seems that OTA update for 5.0.1 is now appearing in some countries, however I have a question…

Does anybody know if OTA updates are safe for Jailbreak users?

It would be the first time I would attempt an OTA update so I wouldn’t like to loose my jb.

    • OGT

“obviously” is Not safe for JB… MuscleNerd just said it…!

    • iRockU

The 2 words “update” and “jailbreak” are never safe together. EVER!!

  • @!X@

Well, lets see OTA is going good so far ……………………………WOW it worked

  • Kwopau

Cool thanks. I did not know that the update would be out today:D Thanks for the heads up.

    • Kwopau

I did the 5.0.1 OTA (Only took 10 minute to complete the instal, and was pretty fast).

      All went well.

  • chrystal

antone have any idea why i cant jailbreak my iphone 4 from sprint iv tried a bunch of times and it get stuck at the waiting for reboot and it dont do anything. im new to the iphone and jailbreaking. thanks for what ever help you can give.

    • OGT

Please Read more about Jailbreak, For iPhone4 iOS5 there is JB but is Tether…!

    • Rob

Since iOS5 jailbreak is tether right now you have to use redsnow to boot it up after you jailbreak. Also you can’t reboot iPhone or else it won’t until you use redsnow to boot it up again. Unless of course you download & install semitether from cydia and that only works if you don’t have a jailbreak app that runs in the background i.e. sbsettings

    • Globe

If your iPhone is from Sprint, it is a 4S and there is no available jailbreak for it.

      • Rob

You can get an 8gb iPhone 4 on Sprint. It’s the lowest end iPhone you can get on Sprint.

  • kiddowiddo

I tried the OTA update, and it says “Unable to Check for Update” I’m NOT jailbroken as of now and I’ve tried rebooting as such, but nothing?

  • noname

any news about Push mail ? or still doesn’t work

    • chad

it works , i tried it out and it works

      • noname

        thanks. yes, works fine.

  • Ryan

Muscle nerd also tweeted that just backing up your shsh blobs in not enough to downgrade in ios 5.0

    • OGT

      Holly sh!t..!

      • Hak

        Why?

        • Ryan

Doesn’t say wish I knew but he also tweeted that If u upgrade to 5.0.1 you close the untether window that they just found

          • Frosti7

of course he didnt mention that 5.0.1 closes the untheter a few hours ago when i still could upgrade to 5.0…sigh

  • http://eazynetbiz.ws Web Host Pays

The download took 2 minutes on wifi. Update went smoothly. I can’t tell my battery is draining any slower though, since I didn’t have a problem before. I noticed scrolling through the menus and app store seems to be smoother/quicker though.

  • Hak

Downloading OTA, I wish battery issue on my iPhone 4 now gets resolved!!

  • Ted

    DID UPDATE- GETTING WORSE BATTERY

    • Ted

      worse battery
      slower typing response
      slower scroll

      • Lily

Im wit ya my 64gb are drianing faster than it was 5.0
        And I update ota

  • Hak

Did the update now, will see if it fixes the iPhone 4 battery issue!!!!!

  • CJ

Did the OTA. The 3gs is running smoother now than before. Less choppiness which is what I was first experiencing with iOS 5.

  • dmdm

    Can I upgrade from 4.3.1 to IOS5 (not5.0.1) ???

    • Rob

Nope apple only signs the latest iOS.

      • dmdm

well,I just did!! it seems that apple is still signing for ios5

  • j4nuS

no improvement seen on battery… losing 1% every 15 minutes.

  • TJ

Okay, so I discovered a potential problem/benefit when upgrading to 5.0.1 for jailbreak users: It simply WILL NOT update OTA. At least not on my iPhone 4.

What this means for me, at least, is that I cannot lose my jailbreak via any delta updates OTA like this. Which is awesome. But, conversely, it also means that I will continue to suffer from piss poor battery management.

I suppose I have to pick the lesser of two evils…

  • Bobo

    OK, NOW PLEASE RELEASE UNTETHERED!

  • Someone

The battery issue is still on my iPhone 4S. I have updated OTA. The usage timer does not stop even when in stand by mode.

  • Hak

It seems that the battery issue is not resolved yet!

  • tang

The battery seems same no improvement

  • Pewko

    Nice, sad to wait thou…
Won’t ruin my jailbreak once again.

  • pallepi

I updated it on my iPhone 4S and it looks promising.
I felt it don’t drop so drastically like before. Will let it runs for a full day and see…
    :-)

  • http://www.motorbeam.com/ fas

    So does OTA eliminate OTA?

  • Coleco

Did my updat at 22.00 on hurdays 11th, went to be at 2am with 40% got up with 20% battery CRAP

  • Dice

Like to be able to change siri’s voice in next up date, if i gotta talk to her would much rather hear sum thing sexxy

  • krakimon

im starting to be pissed off nothing changed for Im on Iphone 4S and again i Update My phone and my GF’s iphone 4 to Ios 5.0.1 charge them to 100% at the morning after like 10 hours stand by both phone same settings iphone 4S 89% iphone 4 99

    • cheeto

      iphone 4 99% after 10 hours, that’s 16 days standby…..total bullshit!
89% after 10 hours is normal ffs

      • noname

total bullshits – iPhone 4 charge to 100% at 11.pm and morning 8. am is still 100% or 99%. iCloud only notice and mail. GPS off, 3G on, Wifi on. The problem is probably on operator side. When i was using roaming i had such a issue – 10 % less in stand by in 10 hours

    • ian

And you really expected the 4S to be better on battery life than the 4?
The 4S as a more powerful CPU (Which i’m quite sure you are aware of). That alone is enough to cause more battery drain.

All the people on here wanted the “Latest, best device” with more power but still expect the same if not better results from what is basically the same battery…

  • City23

WOW. Well I guess if you don’t care about an untethered jailbreak then go ahead and update. Chronic Dev team said the only untethered JB will be out for iOS 5.0….NOT 5.0.1. You were warned but followed apples updated scheme. I’m waiting for the JB. Only thing I can say is enjoy your stocked iPhone!

    • morris

      who gives a flying fuck

  • momo

i updated to 5.0.1 but notice nothing by mid morning downgraded back to 5.0 and waiting to jailbreak the damn thing

    • Jigga

      How did u downgrade?

  • cki

The music volume is much lower.

  • http://www.uselessdesires.co.uk Ryan

It IS available OTA – at least it is here in the UK. I’ve updated without iTunes for the first time!

  • Seb

DO NOT UPGRADE! – It’s going to screw up your iPad if you do – they don’t test these updates and are expecting for us to act as guinea pigs. I’ve just got my iPad yesterday – updated as iTunes asked me if I want – and now I regret – Most of the apps I’m using wont’ start for some reason.
