How To Fix iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch Wi-Fi Connectivity Issue After Upgrading To iOS 5

Few days back Engadget reported that some users were facing Wi-Fi connectivity issues after upgrading to iOS 5 or iOS 5.0.1.

Based on this discussion thread, it seems to be affecting iPhone 4S, iPhone 4S, iPhone 3GS, the iPads and even iPod touch users.

This is not the first time iOS device users are facing Wi-Fi connectivity issues after upgrading to the latest iOS 5/iOS 5.0.1 software update. Users have reported similar issues with Wi-Fi connectivity after upgrading to iOS 3.x and iOS 4.x software  update as well.

If you’re facing any of these issues, you can follow these tips to see if one of them resolves the issue until Apple releases an iOS software update to fix the issue:

Basic Troubleshooting:

  • Launch Settings app
  • Tap Wi-Fi
  • Turn Wi-Fi toggle off and then on again

Renew IP Address:

If this doesn’t work then try to renew IP address, which may be required if you are using a larger wireless network.

  • Launch Settings app
  • Tap on the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
  • Scroll down and tap on the Renew Lease button

Forget This Network:

If renewing IP address doesn’t resolve the issue, try establishing a fresh connection with the Wi-Fi network by using the Forget This Network option. Please note that this will clear your current Wi-Fi network settings, including saved Wi-Fi passwords.

  • Launch Settings app
  • Tap on the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
  • Tap on the Forget This Network button
  • You will be prompted with a message that your iOS device will stop automatically joining this network. Tap on the Forget button.
  • Go back to the list of Wi-Fi networks, try to locate and join the Wi-Fi network again.

If this doesn’t help try restarting your iOS device.

Restart iOS Device:

  • Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until “slide to power off” slider appears. Slide your finger across the slider and iOS device will turn off after a few moments.
  • Turn iOS device on by pressing and holding the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.

Reset Network Settings:

If restarting your iOS device doesn’t resolve the problem then reset all network settings. Please note that this will clear your current cellular and Wi-Fi network settings, including saved networks, Wi-Fi passwords, and VPN settings.

  • Launch Settings app
  • Tap General
  • Scroll to the bottom of the screen and tap on Reset
  • Tap Reset Network Settings
  • When the device restarts, try to locate and join the Wi-Fi network again.

Please let us know if you’re facing any Wi-Fi connectivity issue after upgrading to iOS 5 or iOS 5.0.1 and if any of the tips mentioned above helped in resolving the issue.

Never had this issue on my iphone 4S 5.0.1. It must be the wireless issue on their end.

  • Javeezy

I got this issue last night. My 4S was not connecting to my router. It was connecting ON and OFF

  • @iTaos

When this happens to me I’m using Safari and by the time I exit that go to settings its connected again weird.

  • I’d bet it has to do with people’s router and settings. I found that wpa and aes works best with iPhones. Also there’s a matter of 802.11g or 802.11n. I have a mix of devices so g/n mixed is a must.

Rebooting their router should be one of the first troubleshooting steps.

  • franky_g

I got this issue last night too
. My I 4 5.01 was not connecting to my router. It was constantly connecting ON and OFF
    had to restart the I4

  • Lex

I’m having this problem using a Fios router. Connectivity gets lost after waking. WiFi on/off toggle clears issue temporarily but I find myself just using 3G as an alternative.

  • SAiNT

iP4S, 5.0. No issues at all.

I’ve had this issue with my iPhone 4S since I’ve first got it. Sometimes, it randomly doesn’t want to connect to the internet while it’s connected to Wifi. In other occasions, specifically when connecting to the App Store, it gives me a notification “please connect to a secure network”, turning on and off the Wifi setting usually fixes the problem for a while.

My iPhone 4 ios5 doesn’t have the issue, but my girlfriends iPhone 4 iOS 5.01 has a problem where it gets an out of range IP address, I have a DHCP server running, and if her Internet is not working, I have to forget the network, then rejoin it, but in 30 min it has gone back to the older IP. I have since set her IP as static, so hopefully it will just keep working with that until a fix is released.

No problem on my 4s. Only sound bug.

  • Jason

I have same bug on wifi and celular connection. It only seams to
happen when the phone tries to find its location. Turning off location services seams to be the only answer for me.

On iPad 2 with ios 4.3.3 I noticed that WiFi connectivity can be lost while browsing the internet in Browser. It is sufficient to go to Home screen, wait for WiFi icon to appear and then switch back to browser and you can continue browsing or watching videos.
Strange, but it happened many times, and not only in browser. Also in other applications and also on iPhone. Switch to Home screen, wait for WiFi icon to appear and switch back to application. It always helps, so I guess it is iOS software issue.

Some of the connectivity issues mentioned can generally be traced back to the security that is being used. Most current iOS devices don’t like WEP security. Change the router to WPA or WPA2. I’ve helped a number of people with that issue and changing security fixed the problem.

Now, the WiFi dropping while it is being used.
I updated to iOS 5.1. Prior to the update, we would stream movies from iTunes through the phone and into the video on our VCR. OK, we are old fashioned.

The problem that occured was that after a period of time, the movie would stop playing. Checking the phone, WiFi was gone and 3G was on. This was repeatable on several different movies. Most times several times through the movie.

The fix. I went into networking and turned off cellular data. (I also turned off 3G, but with cellular data off, it should be sufficient) By doing that, I have been able to watch several of the movies that we were having problems with. The phone was not touch during each movie.

My theory is that in an effort to save battery life, there is monitoring software that is looking for some sort of user activity. If there is no user activity, turn off WiFi and save the juice. If the iPhone just sits on the desk and is on, after a few minutes, the WiFi will go away and show 3G. As soon as you do something on the screen, the phone connects back to WiFi. When it does this during a movie, we have had to exit the video app, goto into settings and connect to the WiFi again. Real pain.

Anyway, if you are experiencing this sort of issue, turn off cellular data when you are going to be using WiFi for any period of time where the phone might not be touched.

I’m having this prob and it started before iOS5. It’s not just on my iP4 but my sister, brother and the Missus have the same issue on iP4S.
Wi-fi connection is also lost on wake-up!!!

  • fas

I guess this is more on the iPhone then anything else.

  • N2O

I´ve had this problem since my first iphone 3G, also on 3GS and then on iPhone 4 – solution was always switching router on/off. So i think it´s not only iOS 5 fault. Pretty annoying :-/

have you guys checked the channel on your router, log in and do a should be a tab for site survey, it will find other wireless routers in the area then choose a channel not used, default is normally auto. I found it normally chooses channel 6…. 5 other routers in my area all on channel 6.

    Hope this helps

  • Also on 10.7.2 i am facing the same issue.

  • tolula

I only this problem when using wifi on Fios. Power cycling router fixes issue until it happens again 🙁

  • Sandra

…we all use the wifi at home my brother uses the the wifi for his ipad my sister uses it for her ipod touch and her iphone 4s with no problem at all but i can only use the wifi for my ipod touch i also have an iphone but it’s the one that came out before the iphone4 and it can’t even find the wifi network that we are using at home and it can’t find no other networks either…so i don’t know if it’s an apple problem a telstra problem or just the phone itself…the other thing i’m not happy about the iphone is that you can’t receive pic messages(mms)..the only way to view the pic is to go onto the telstra website and view it that way which is pathetic..

  • nice tutorial…
i will try this on my iphone 4G.
    thanks buddy 🙂

Hi there, I have two iP4 in the same Wireless WPA network with static IP assignment.
After upgrading one of them to iOS5.0.1, Wireless network connection was totally lost.
The other iP4 with, iOS5, worked and still works fine.

Solution (thanks to jus-sayin ‘s suggestion!):
Changing the broadcast Channel (e.g. from 3 to 12) on the Router Wireless configuration. Issue was automatically solved. I did not have to change any config on the iPhone. Enjoy!

I have updated my son’s ipad 1 from ios 3.2 to 5.01. I have since then lost access to internet. It seems that the ipad is connecting to the router (Apple airport extreme) but unable to get an ip address and the wifi icon doesn’t appear on the toolbar. I also created a network using my MacBook, the ipad connects to this network but still no ip assigned and no wifi signal icon appearing. So obviously this is not due to my router but to something in ios 5.01! All Macbooks, iMacs and iPhones are properly working on our home network. This is very frustrating to me and my son, I wish I have never upgraded!!!!

  • Hamza

iP4 IOS5.0.1, I have almost the same problem. After upgrading, my iphone doesnt seem to remember the “OTHER NETWORK” i ever connect to.

  • Shyam

I followed your instruction in “Forget This Network:”

It worked like a charm. Thanks.

  • Claire

Not the case. My iPad 2 and iPhone 4 have no problems since update, but my iPod 3g is unable to join the wifi network despite seeing it with full signal. The ip address etc are all wiped and unable to be entered so its an issue that has occured only since update 🙁

  • Claire

Sorry above comment was for chap stating that this is a router issue. My 3g can see my router but the ip address subnet etc all empty and this is only since 5.1 update. I have tried all the advice mentioned above and nothing worked including forgetting the network and reset. It is so frustrating.

  • Carol

I’m having the same problem since the 5.1 update, I’m using a 4S and it refuses to hold the wifi passwords to known wifis.. I have tried all the suggestions here but nothing is working, how frustrating! If I had unlimited data I wouldn’t even care but with it constantly dropping wifi and ended up running on my data plan, sucks! Yes, I know can tune off “G” but I dont wanna keep jumping back and forth in settings either!

    I hope they fix this!

  • Grim

None of these fixes work. I can’t even attempt most of these solutions because the wifi option is completely grayed out, simply saying “no wifi” and I can’t click on it. All I can try is to toggle airplane mode a few times, and reset the network settings. No such luck. All I can say is I’ll take it to the Apple store and see what they can do or if they’ll replace it. If Apple doesn’t do anything to correct this, they’ve lost a customer, cause this is kind of unacceptable.

  • janet

None of this worked. i reset the network settings and it made me restore my ipod! ugh!

I have the same issue and it’s extremely frustrating. I’m travelling for business, at a hotel, and my laptop connects just fine, no problems. I’ve tried all of the above suggestions, and my ipad just refuses to connect. How is it that a crappy old dell laptop has no problems, but my ipad does?? Very frustrating.

  • Joe

If its a 3G you must go to the apple store to fix it
