iH8sn0w has also released Sn0wbreeze 2.8 beta 11 to jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch that was just released by Apple.
Sn0wbreeze is considered the unofficial PwnageTool for Windows. It allows users to create custom iOS 5.0.1 firmware file that is pre-jailbroken, which can be used to upgrade their iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch to iOS 5.0.1.
In case of iPhone, it also preserves the baseband from getting upgraded so that it can be unlocked using Ultrasn0w.
According to the release notes, Sn0wbreeze 2.8 beta 11 includes the following features:
- Supports iOS 5.0 (9A334)/5.0.1 (9A405)
- Fixed iBooks sandbox crashing issues (as of 2.8b9).
- Fixed location services issues with iPhone 3GS
- users running the iPad baseband (as of 2.8b9).
- Re-added iPad baseband install option to iPhone 3GS.
- Tethered devices are booted via iBooty which is
- extracted to the Desktop after running sn0wbreeze.

Sn0wbreeze 2.8 beta 11 supports an untethered jailbreak for iPhone 3GS (old bootrom) and a tethered jailbreak for the remaining iOS 5 devices mentioned above, which means that you need to connect your iOS device to the computer on every reboot. It cannot jailbreak iPad 2 or iPhone 4S.
Dev team strongly recommends jailbreakers and unlockers to avoid upgrading to iOS 5.0.1 until they figure out the process to downgrade to iOS 5.

I did manage to JB 5.0.1 with Redsn0w 0.9.9b8. Press “just download” 5.0.5 IPSW in iTunes, then locate it in your library. Copy to Pwnaged folder where you also have Redsn0w [you also will need the 5.0 ipsw file]. Go to iTunes Option+clic Update and locate the 5.0.1. and let iTunes update it. Then close iTunes and run Redsn0w. Mannualy select 5.0 IPSW [current version of redsn0w does not support 5.0.1 yet] and jailbreak. Follow the instructions as with 5.0 jailbreaking. I don’t care about unlocking, so be careful.

No it’s still tethered. it’s just a possibility before they release Redsn0w for Mac that can work with 5.0.1. I would search the site for untethered for 3GS.

Worked for me! But I have no clue, why you were talking about pwnaged folder? I just downloaded 0.9.9b8, selected manually the old 5.0 and my 3GS (new br) was jailbroken on 5.0.1. BUT: cydia is still gray. Using redsn0w for “Just boot tethered right now” does not work. So I can start my iPhone, but the jailbreak does not work..
OK, problem solved. I just had to specify the 5.0 AGAIN manually and THEN click on “Just boot”

I’m betting the 4gs unthethered jailbreak is on the way and will be available by Thanksgiving. I have the new 4gs ready to go when the jailbreak hits. In the meantime, I’m happy with 4g jailbroken.

This is about Apple naming conventions.
First generation
2g second generation
3g third generation
3gs still third generation; more CPU speed
4 is for 4th generation
4s is still 4th generation; more CPU speed. S = speed
Ok let clarify the iPhones things here.
2G means 2G data network
3G means 3G data network
3Gs means 3G data network, but the phone’s CPU is twice the speed of the 3G phone
iPhone 4 is only compatible with 3G data network
iPhone 4s is still only compatible with 3G data network, but the phone’s CPU is twice the speed comparing to an iPhone 4.
Carriers are slowly building their 4G data networks, but your phone has to support it. I think the Atrix, the Galaxy 2s and other Andriod devices are 3G and 4G capable. However, the 4G data networks are not everywhere, but slowly expand.
I wish Apple would stick with an easy convention for naming their phones.
i.e.
- iPhone = iPhone 2G
- iPhone 2 = iPhone 3G
- iPhone 3 = iPhone 3G[S]
- iPhone 4 = iPhone 4 of course
- iPhone 5 = iPhone 4[S]
Apple doesn’t name their iphones based on what generation it is. They just go with the flow, which changes in number when there’s a dramatic upgrade while adding an [s] for an incremental upgrade. They could easily name the next model 4GS if all they’re adding is LTE capabilities. It wouldn’t be called 5 unless there were dramatic changes like a redesigned form factor.
Or more likely the next big update with LTE is going to be called 4G and then do another incremental upgrade the year after calling it 4GS. Just like with the 3G and 3GS. Also the next iPhone is most likely not going to be called 5 since the 4S is the 5th iPhone. @Eric the first iPhone wasn’t officially called the iPhone 2G by apple but I guess it’s used to helps people distinguish which iPhone they are talking about.

You can use both…redsnow or snowbreeze…you didn’t preserve your old baseband then you can use any method…

As long as you have the 4 or below you can still probably jailbreak right now using redsnow you just have to point it to 5.0 when jailbreaking.
I am on 5.0.1 now and loving it. I can always back down to 4.3.3 and JB again. Anyway, I find the 4.3.3 is somewhat boring and want try out the 5.0.1. By the way, my battery is doing great so far.
How do you downgrade to 4.3.3?
My 4.3.3 has been ssh blobs saved. Put the phone to dfu mode, change local host ip address pointing to Cydia and restore through iTunes. Need to have the custom OS on your pc

At the risk of sounding ungrateful… maybe we could try harder for an actual UN-Tethered version quicker instead of spitting out tethered updates??…. Hmmmmm
Be patient I’m sure the people that update the jailbreak tools aren’t the same ones that work on the actual jailbreak and since the jailbreak process probably hasn’t changed in a while it doesn’t matter. Also I’m sure finding a bootrom exploit for creating a untethered jailbreak is like punching a brick wall blindly hoping to find a weaks spot to break through

You guys should mention in the article that Ultrasn0w is NOT working in 5.0.1. Some sort of compatibility issue I think. I just used Sn0wBreeze on my old bootrom 3GS to get 5.0.1 jailbroken, and installing ultrasn0w will still not let me use my T-mobile SIM.
I have a 3GS laying in my dresser drawer, haven’t used it since upgrading to the 4. I was thinking about upgrading my 3GS from ios 3.whatever to ios 5 or 5.0.1. I’m wondering if it’s still possible to downgrade back to the original ios 3.whatever if I’m not satisfied after upgrading to ios 5 or 5.0.1? I have no plans to upgrade my 4, my primary phone, until an untethered jail break is available.
Re iPod Touch jailbreaks:
Shouldn’t it be easier/faster to do a Touch untethered jailbreak, since one doesn’t have to worry about basebands etc.? Or what’s the problem?

The dev team is slowly losing the battle. They lost the ability to unlock — they can’t jailbreak iOS5 untethered and can’t even touch Iphone 4s or iPad2. What makes me annoyed is that nobody’s even actually trying except them now… everyone just sits there and expects THEM to do it for them. News flash — they can’t, or they won’t. We all know they’ll stall until the cows come home, or they get showed up by a single, genius developer.
I think you are right. Its been so long since Ipad was jailbroken and no iOS5 untethered. Looks like the battle is going in the favor of Apple… My wonderful Iphone 4S and Ipad 5 is not so wonderful anymore

I had the same issue on two of my laptop (Dell) XP and Win 7. don’t work. then try on my work PC, Lenovo. worked like a chime. I think maybe driver issue.
I had the 1600 error numerous times, found a trick….. If it does just about a complete restore( the line under apple logo on screen is basically full) and gives 1600 error, use redsn0w just boot option. It worked for me, I then synced phone with iTunes and it was fine… Rebooted device hundreds of times since

The latest untethered for the iPhone 4 is IOS 4.3.3. Anything above this is tethered. Will see how the 5.0.0 and 5.0.1 go. I have been on JB forever, so Iam not too crazy about it.
Anyone getting a odd problem after booting tethered where the screen shrinks to about 1/5th the size on the top left hand corner? Seems to be the only way to fix this is to have springboard in safe mode and reopen everything to get it to regain its size. Just wondering if anyone might know what springboard/cydia app might be causing this as I have only the basics on my phone
I’m having a problem with Sn0wBreeze 2.8b10 (not 11!) jailbroken iPhone 4. When every I try to use the international keyboard the app crashes and the phone jumps to the springboard. This happens in every single app with a text entry field: Safari, Notes, Reminder, Message, Mail, etc, etc, etc. There was one time when my text input was stuck on International and I couldn’t change it back to English, so whenever I tried to enter anything at all it would crash. Had to restore to fix that one…
Any ideas!? Google’s giving no answers!

Hi, i got a solution to fix the keyboard crash as mine crashes before when i switched to traditional chinese; follow the steps below.
—
1. Create “preserve baseband only” ipsw with snowbreeze (this step does not jailbreak your device, but only keep the current baseband, you will jailbreak your device with redsn0w later)
2. SHSH stitch the “preserved baseband ipsw” with your 5.0.1 SHSH with redsn0w (this step allows iTunes to restore to previous firmware that’s already old in Apple’s database, it also skips the 3194 error)

1. Put ur iphone into pwned dfu mode, shift+restore with “preserved baseband only” ipsw
2. After phone is back on, use “redsn0w_win_0.9.10b5c” –> Select “factory clean 5.0.1 ipsw” –> jailbreak your device with it.

After all, it should be fine. If you do not need to preserve your previous baseband, just disregard the snowbreeze step, and go directly from factory restore 5.0.1 -> redsn0w jailbreak with clean ipsw

How come dev’s didn’t post this and or see this coming??? And all these writers need to update there articles on preserving our basebands and updating to iOS 5.0.1 but I still can’t get iTunes to restore to custom iOS 5.0.1 keep getting error 3194 or 2005 and yes I already checked and changed my hosts file to many times to count ps I’m on windows vista using sn0wbreeze 2.8b11 and custom iOS 5.0.1 from sn0wbreeze Any other suggestions I don’t care about JB just keeping my baseband for Gevey ultra on iPhone 4 get JB later if possible… I guess just restore back to 4.3.3 and wait for Redsn0w to do custom ipsw’s to keep BB??? If I was you I would go back to 4.3.3 and keep the baseband to be compatible with your turbo sim. Read up on the Tinyumbrella and see when they release the latest tool to preserve the baseband during the upgrade to the latest OS. I am not a fan of Snowbreeze. That junk really kills your battery big time.
Ok cleared Tinyumbrella v 5.01.00 stopped it from using Cydia hosts and stopped Tinyumbrella from running concurrently with iTunes! Using iTunes 10.5
Then restarted iTunes and shift restore pointing to custom FW iOS 5.0.1 by Sn0wbreeze v 2.8b11 and it finally I think it’s working but now i don’t know what to do next iTunes says it restored but it’s not showing up in iTunes and iPhone 4 shows apple and blank loading bar…maybe I’m suppose to start ibooty now or am I’m suppose to do something else. Suggestions would be nice! Thanks in advance!
Ok. You’ve asked for it hacker. Here are the steps:
1- download the latest Snowbreeze.
2- download IOS 5.0.1 IPSW
3- fire up Snowbreeze and browse to the IOS that you just downloaded
4- Snowbreeze is now cooking the OS
5 -Snowbreeze will instruct you to put your phone on DFU mode
6- open iTunes, hold the shift key and click on restore
7- browse to the IOS that Snowbreeze just cooked
8- ITunes is now restoring your phone with this custom OS
9 -your phone will not boot normally after the restored
10- this is why Snowbreeze comes with Ibooty for you to boot your JB to tethered

I accidentally updated my iphone4 with Itunes the other day and the phone, of course, became locked. I have followed your clear advice to a tee and everything works perfectly except that after i use Ibooty I am in exactly the same position again. i.e. the phone takes me through set up and then says my sim card is no good. I have no idea what I’m doing wrong but I have spent days on this and can see no light at the end of this dark tunnel:( Please help

Hello, I’ve been trying to jailbreak my iphone 3gs with redsn0w and ive tried with snowbreeze but my phone keeps on freezing so im restoring it constantly to try and jailbreak. With redsn0w it gets past the reboot and just stays frozen and with snowbreeze it never finished rebooting after the jailbreak. It gets frozed with the apple logo and the little bar at the bottom that shows the recovery progress. Does anyone know why thats happening?? Thanks!

Hi all, I’ve managed to jailbreak my iPhone on IOS 5.0.1 using redsnow, but for some reason it keeps on crashing and going back to semi-tether as I can only call and use messages and official apps. Any ideas?
Can anyone help me? I am trying to jb my iPhone 4 iOS 5.0.1 I used snowbreez to make my IPSW and got my .shsh blobs while running the tinyumbrella server I am getting error 11 on restore. Not sure what I am doing wrong. I have also edited my hosts file. I read somewhere that I need to take out my bbsw from IPSW but not sure how to do that.

I’m in the exact same boat as you, although I already performed the step of removing my bbfw file (all you have to do is rename the .ipsw to .zip, open that, remove the bbfw file from the firmware folder, save the archive, rename back to .ipsw) – but I am still getting error 11. Any tips???

I just received a notification to update iTunes 10.5.1.42 and finally the error 3194 is gone and now updating my iPhone from 4.1 to 5.0.1

I have an old bootrom 3gs which was on IOS 5.0 and unlocked using ultrasnow on baseband 06.15.00 . It suddenly cut off in my pocket without me knowing. I tried everything to reboot it but nothing worked. I had to upgrade to IOS 5.0.1 using sn0wbreeze 2.8 b11. The phone rebooted properly and functions fine except it seems to still be locked after running ultrasnow. I still have the 06.15.00 baseband. It says invalid sim and then No Service. I just read that ultrasn0w is not compatible with 5.0.1, is this true and how soon will it be updated ??

Hi, I have just upgraded and jailbreak my iPhone 4 from iOS 4.3.3 to 5.0.1 using the Sn0wbreeze 2.8b11. I am relying on ultrasn0w to unlock my baseband 01.59.00 and if I upgrade or downgrade, I won’t be able to unlock. However, after I upgrade my firmware to iOS 5.0.1 by sn0wbreeze, Cydia and Safari crashed every time I open it. Now, can’t use the Cydia to unlock and Safari. Can someone help? Please……is there any other solution?

Managed to get Safari working, but now Cydia has a blank icon and still won’t start.
To get Safari working, make sure you have restored your iDevice to 5.0.1 (as provided by APPLE) AND HAVE DOWNLOADED iOS 5.0 (google it). After that, use redsn0w 0.9.9b8 and click ‘Extras’ > Select IPSW > Locate your iOS 5.0 IPSW and jailbreak using that. You will have Safari working.
I’m now working on a way to get Cydia working as well.
