How To Unlock iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS Without Jailbreaking [Updated]

iOS 5

It looks like a bug in iOS 5 allows you to unlock iPhone 4S without the need to jailbreak it or using hardware methods such as GEVEY SIM.

The bug was discovered by Michael Capozzi. He managed to unlock his iPhone 4S to use it on T-Mobile USA's network but according to him the method should also work with any GSM carrier.

He has been kind enough to also give the following step-by-step guide to unlock iPhone 4S using the bug in iOS 5 to work on T-Mobile USA:

Note: You will need to cut the T-Mobile SIM to micro-SIM size for it to fit iPhone 4S's SIM tray.

  1. Insert original carrier AT&T SIM card
  2. Dial 611 for AT&T customer service hotline and drop the call
  3. Turn on Airplane Mode
  4. Take out AT&T SIM card
  5. Insert T-Mobile SIM card
  6. Make sure WiFi is off ( also tap on ‘Forget this Network” to make sure it doesn’t connect automatically later)
  7. Switch off Airplane Mode and iPhone will search for network. This is followed by the Apple splash screen appearing.
  8. Activation Required will be displayed on the screen
  9. EDGE network will activate automatically – notice the ‘E’ on the top left corner of the screen
  10. Wait for about 20-30 seconds and turn off the phone
  11. Turn on iPhone and the same Activation Required screen will be displayed
  12. When you see one signal bar, tap on Use Cellular Connection
  13. Eject SIM card
  14. Activation Required screen will be displayed the second time
  15. Insert SIM card
  16. Unlocked!

You can also checkout the video which shows that it works and suggests that the method could also work with iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS:

Gizmodo has also confirmed that this method works.

Update 1:

Gizmodo and Lg1, one of our regular readers has also confirmed that it works with AT&T iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS.

Update 2:

This method appears to be temporary, you can read all the details here.

As always, let us know how it goes.

How come when he restarts his iPhone the apple symbol expands towards you… I have had an iPhone since 3Gs model and I have never had my apple symbol expand towards you as its loading

Is this possibly a jailbreak of some sort ??

    • sam says:

the new logo shows up only on 4s n ipad 2

      • GreenTag says:

I have the 4s and iPad 2 update to iOS 5.0.1 and I do not have glowing expanding apple logo… Tried on both devices… I think hes got something done to his phone

        • Brett says:

No he does not. Thats the first start boot up from Ios5. Don’t jump to conclusions.

          • GreenTag says:

Is that only after a restore because when I got my iphone 4s and turned it on for the very first time I never got that glowing expanding apple logo. I have never seen that before that is why I asked? But thanks for the explanation…

  4. mackie says:

It does not look right with the Apple logo glowing!

  5. susy says:

also once its unlock can the phone be turned off and still be on tmobile when powered back on?

  6. Mrl09 says:

Does the tmobile sim need to be actived line?

  11. Melvarius says:

don’t at&t own t mobile and share networks now? in uk orange and t mobile have joined and you can activate a locked to orange phone with a t mobile sim. would be interesting to see if it works with another network.

  12. Axe says:

The apple logo on my 4s does expand & shine but only after a data erase before restore from icloud. It happens only once per erase/restore. Not every reboot. I’m not sure what happen to that video.

  13. Pankaj says:

I am in indian, i bought my at&t iphone 4 with BB 4.10.01. I am using a Airtel network. Till now i was using GEVEY sim and its working fine.

I upgraded to iOS 5.0 while preserving the baseband so its working fine with GEVEY sim.

I tried this method now. It didnt work for me on iphone 4. May be because there is no AT&T network in India. Also when I put my Airtel sim the activation required screen does not come.

    Any suggessions ???

    - Pankaj

      • Rw says:

I live in Panama, I just unlocked my iPhone 4S with iOS 5.

My carrier is Cable And Wireless, and it worked for me. I have also unlocked my girlfriend’s 4S.

I tried to do it with my sister’s iPhone 4 and it didnt work.

Does anybody knows if it only works with 4s and iOS 5?

        • gam says:

hermano yo tambn vivo en panama y estoy con el mismo problema, te funciono, porfavor dime como para arreglas esta vaina, estoy desesperado.

          Saludos men

  14. Lex says:

I wonder if an active T-mobile prepaid sim would do the trick or it needs to be postpaid.

  15. andyd says:

Hm, would this work on my japanese iphone? i have it unlocked w/ gevey at the moment, but i still have the original softbank sim, so could i unlock this with my at&t sim?

  16. Sam says:

I bought a Att iPhone without a contract from apple for $649 I activated it using a tmobile sim card and it unlocked the phone without going thorugh this hassle. The modern firmware was 01.xxx. If you activate a iPhone 4 using the att sim card the model firmare becomes 04.11.08 and that cannot be unlocked using this method. plus if the iPhone model is MC319LL you cannot unlock it

  17. P_NY says:

Is a glitch and its more likely that apple will fix this on the upcoming software update

  18. froger says:

how come when he has airplane mode on he can see wifi isnt it suppose to stop that

    • Peter says:

No, you can go in and turn wifi on and still have the airplane mode active, I think it is killing the carrier signal only that way.

  19. paradox1 says:

what baseband or firmware do you have to be on. Just tried it on my iphone4 04.xx.xx and no works.

  20. Kyle says:

Looks intriguing, but raises many questions.

    1) What basebands can be use this method?
    2) What models can use this method?
    3) Is it a permanent unlock?
    4) Do you have to be in the US as there is a connection to AT&T in the video?
    5) Will the unlock work with other carriers besides T-Mobile?

Seems exciting, yet I can’t help but feel suspicious.

    K

    • Joutinho says:

Yeah, I posted almost the same questions below.
Aparently it seems this works ONLY on 4S and for all other models like 3GS or 4 someone just said it works but is nothing but a false statement, a hoax !
I’ve been browsing articles and forums since the original posting and did not find any reliable confirmation that someone proved to be able to unlock an iPhone 4
There is a huge lack of information on this. Gizmodo website just posted the article&video and did not mention anything afterwards about it.
And what is that crap about clicking the video and the message saying “This is a private video” ????

  21. Jenn says:

I did all the steps but the last step gives me invalid sim.
I tried a few time, one time it gives me full bar signal at the set up phone page but when i use cellular connection to activate, it gave invalid sim again.

    • Jenn says:

i guess you have to reject the sim and insert the sim right back in to see tmobile then it turn off right away. he said you have to have data in order for the sim to activate through cellular connection, so the phone can’t recognize it’s tmobile sim. however, I have data plan on mine, but it didn’t work either =[

  22. Pamela says:

    will this work with 04.11.08?

  23. lu says:

    is working in uk ?

  24. JDM773 says:

it doesn’t work for iphone 4 bb 4.10.0 ios5. dont waste your time.

  25. ricengga says:

i tried it it worked but i guess cuz the sim card i have isn’t active it turns off after it says tmobile…

  26. Rox says:

I tried it on my iPhone 4S locked to Vodafone UK, rang Voda customer services 2345 and followed instructions but when inserting my O2 UK SIM it doesn’t work! Tried several times

    • Johnboy2012 says:

Hi there I’ve got the same problem as you I’m on vadafone and when insert my O2 sim it does the same as what said did you manage to sort the problem.

  27. itsyaboy says:

does it work on 5.0.1 ?

  28. fas says:

  32. MadBaztard says:

Does this work on the moon?

    • Kalimente says:

      For me it did :D

      • Joutinho says:

So please, tell us the following
        1) Is you phone an iPhone 4 or an iPhone 4S ?
        2) Which country are you located ?
        3) Did you try with a sim card from which carrier ?
        4) Did you dial 611 or the local number for your provider ?
        Thanks

  33. Jon says:

When I turn off Airplane Mode after putting in T-Mobile SIM, all I get is SIM FAILURE popup and the top left says Invalid sim. This is an iPhone 4 on ios 5.0

  34. Mike says:

Will it work on CDMA iPhone 4S

  35. Richy33 says:

Why do we see some “does it work in Vladivostok” or wherever… ? Just give it a try !!! and tell us !

  36. Kwopau says:

Is it confirmed yet that it works on iOS5.0.1. Not that it matters for me because there is NO T-Mobile where I live.

  37. L27027 says:

Guess it’s not working outside US, but may be working for phones locked in other places as well.
Last week I bought an AT&T 4S in US contract free and it was already unlocked! Then I restored contents and settings and now it keeps asking for the activation if I try a non AT&T SIM. Anybody has ideas about what’s going on?

    • Joe Obvious says:

It seems pretty obvious. Apple had a glitch in its system that didn’t lock the iPhone properly before sale. They released the unlocked iphone for 50 bucks more and then fixed whatever glitch let your phone be unlocked so that people who paid 649 didn’t feel ripped off.

    • canuck2012 says:

      I would say it’s locked to AT&T
