Another iPhone Explodes, This Time In Brazil

Another report has come in of a user's iPhone exploding, this time in Brazil. In contrast to this week's earlier episode, this one looks to be in worse condition.

A Brazilian website, Blog Do iPhone, reports that a user - Ayla Mota woke up to a bad smell and saw that sparks were flying from the screen of her iPhone 4 and that the room was full of smoke. She unplugged the device from the wall outlet and opened the window to let out the smoke before leaving for safety. She was thankfully not hurt.

This is not the first incident we've seen. Earlier this week, a Regional Express passenger's iPhone "self-combusted" just after landing in Sydney. That device was either an iPhone 4 or an iPhone 4S. Ayla Mota's was an iPhone 4 that she had recently bought in France, and her warranty only covers devices bought in Brazil.

iPhone 4, exploded screen

It's unclear as to what the ultimate cause of each incidence was, and whether or not it's related to the recent start of iPhone production in Brazil.

  1. It’s a fake IPhone! you can see from the screen that its a Chinese copy of the iphone4. I live in helsinki Finland and 75% of mobile users here use iphone and never heared of this kinda story happening here.

  8. Shalashaska says:

hmmmm..anyone seeing a trend here…4 had bad antennas and now 4s explodes???? bad publicity??? maybe…maybe not

    • devol says:

actually…..the first one about a year ago was prob not an iphone4, was def NOT a 4s. the one that exploded last week was not confirmed to be a 4s and this last one was an iphone4, NOT a 4s…..did you READ the article? if anything the few that have had problems were all 4′s not 4s’s…i like how you are jumping right into the “trend” thing. if you mean 3 out of the millions of devices in use have done this and the fact that NO report officially states that the same issue was the cause of these events qualifies this as a trend then i guess your right….but i would call you reaching for a piss poor excuse to try to bash on overwhelmingly popular and high quality device.

  9. Victor says:

Its clear why the phone exploded..
She put the winter cover in France and when she arrived in Brasil she forgot to change with summer cover and phone did not like that :)
Apple should replace that in any country. It doesn’t matter where u purchase

    • Dani says:

Apple should replace them with Galaxy S2′s, Galaxy Nexus, Moto Droids, etc :-P

      • devol says:

i wonder how many, IF ANY iphone fan boys TROLL andriod sites….wait…are there android sites??? lol you guys CRACK me up no matter what kinda snappy lies you come up with, or what specs you wanna regurgitate there will never be a better over all phone than the iphone…that simple. the next phone that will up the current iphone will be THE NEXT IPHONE. android sucks as a platform ive yet to hold one in my hand that FEELS or LOOKS anything close to the iphone. all android sets feel cheap and function the same even the latest galaxy.

        • speel007 says:

@devol, you would criticize the Android phones if they did look and feel like an iPhone. All phone have their benefits and shortcomings. It’s a shame that you can’t see beyond the “i”. As for the better phone, don’t confuse having to spend more with it being a better device. Try increasing the amount of available memory in one, you can’t. Hook it up to your TV without spending $35 for an adapter, you can’t. Why the limitations?

        veryyyyyyyyyyyy cheapppppppppppppp

  10. Adrian says:

    Apple should accept it.
They have problems with their batteries.
Maybe the “faster” A5 procesor is an A4 overclocked and for that reason the problem with drained batteries and heating and explosions.
Anyway it is good to know that there are 2 Iphones less in this planet.

  11. John says:

Well there are millions and millions of iPhones out there and now two of them had a problem. It’s dramatic that that happened, no excuse, but i think in these times of mass production not always everything can go right. I’m sure they will investigate that and probably there was a misuse. I could immagine that in Brazil where it’s hot, maybe the phone was lying for hours in the sun with 40 degrees. Well not either that is an excuse that the phone can explode, but maybe they have to install a security feature which damages the elektricity circuit and keeps the phone cool :-)

  12. dave says:

was this iphone jailbroken, and the previous one before that? if so could it have something to do with the jailbreak? over heating? system malfunction or hardware fault due to being jailbroken?

    just a thought

  13. Rob says:

I didn’t was sure what device to buy, Iphone 4s or Galaxy Nexus but finaly I bought the Nexus and I am very satisfied with it.
I prefered the Nexus because I was tired of the same boring user interface of iOS it limitations and the lack of freedom and I wanted something more functional
Now that I listened about issues with the 4s, I am more than happy x 10 of the change of platform.

  14. Richard says:

It was not a failure, It was the thermo nuclear war that Jobs promised against android

  15. DJScope says:

You guys said “Ayla Mota’s was an iPhone 4 that she had recently bought in France” and then you say “and whether or not it’s related to the recent start of iPhone production in Brazil.”

Are you guys completely retarded or just a little bit?

    • Dan says:

In case, you didn’t know, iPhones until recently were manufactured in China and shipped to whichever country Apple sells the iPhone.

So just like an iPhone manufactured in China can reach France, an iPhone manufactured in Brazil can also be sold in France.

Yes, the chances maybe remote that is the reason Yatri is saying it out loud rather than stating it as a matter of fact.

Get your facts right before you write, especially when you want to call someone retarded.

  16. youngone305 says:

I think I know why these iPhones Explodes is because they don’t use the right charger that come with the product

  17. Kiwiholden says:

The android fanboys crack me up becoz I have both android and iOS and I had to “root” the android (wat the call jailbreaking) just to use it but I don’t see the point jailbreaking my 4S there is just no need to anymore.

Also WHY does everyone only think about the instances that hit the news! There would be more and if u look hard enough u’ll find the same thing with other fones

  18. Craig says:

All the “exploded” phones were 4′s. You can tell the other one is a 4 because you can clearly see it’s serial number in the picture. Jailbreaking would not cause this…that’s just stupid. Maybe it’s altitude since 2 happened on airplanes and one in a tall hotel. Also to all you android queers…go read the story above this one about how droid devices record your texts, keystrokes, passwords, browsing history and literally everything you do on your phone.

    • brunobelo says:

Sorry man, but it’s not android’s fault, it’s carriers fault. The carriers are recording all, installing rootkits and stuff.

And remember, motorola phones exploded in the past, so it’s not about “apple or android or motorola or nokia or jesus or skyrim”.

  19. il Santi says:

A friend of mine plugged an iPhone 4 and bam! Exploded and crashed rear glass

  20. brunobelo says:

    Stupid writter:

“It’s unclear as to what the ultimate cause of each incidence was, and whether or not it’s related to the recent start of iPhone production in Brazil.”

No, IT’S CLEAR! Has NOTHING TO DO, you idiot! You’ve said before:

“Ayla Mota’s was an iPhone 4 that she had recently bought in France, and her warranty only covers devices bought in Brazil.”

If it was bought on France, how can we blame the brazilian factory?!

    • Dan says:

Yup all the lemmings are out in force…..

  22. Joe says:

I’m sorry, but these hardly sound like “explosions” to me. Sure, the thing melted down or some other term, but using the word exploded sounds like nothing more than sensationalism. This doesn’t even touch the fact that these occurrences are statistically insignificant.

  23. Joe says:

Explode: burst or shatter violently and noisily as a result of rapid combustion, decomposition, excessive internal pressure, or other process, typically scattering fragments widely

  24. iphoneuser says:

Could be caused by a Samsung component in iPhone – Samsung getting their revenge !!

  25. Dr. Kino says:

Of course it exploded which phone can handle a brazilian ass?! lol

  26. Ryan says:

I don’t see how the phone being jailbroken would have anything to do with it’s meltdown. I’ve had my iphone 4 since release. Jailbreak since i got it. I’ve had no issues. It has gotten a little warm at times and only when i’ve been using it heavily. I think it’s logical that due to the very few reports of “exploding” iphones that they are due to some kind of production or hardware error.

  27. Rozha says:

It is her own fault.. why does why sleep with the charger connected at night? dont have your charger connected when it is unnecessary.. in her case, the batteri was at 100% and the batteri is getting hot when it is charging and she got that plastic case that suppresses the cooling = getting hotter which leads to a meltdown of a cord inside the batteri which leads to short circuit.
All the energy (ions) rushes from the positive terminal to the negative terminal that causes an explosion :) it might be only 5 volt but the current is alot more..
A car battery can explode as hell even though its ONLY 11 – 14 volt :)
ding* u got a liiiiittle bit smarter guys

and yes, why this is not happening to others, i cant say.. either its a manufacturing or use of an unofficial charger and this should NOT happen if an unofficial charger is used but you disconnect your your batteri at 99 or soon after 100% :)

  28. baba says:

I don’t know if it is me, but why is the picture so squarish??
is it a real Iphone or something else?
