Dev Team Updates Redsn0w; Adds Native Support For iOS 5.0.1, Fixes iBooks Issue And Lots More [Updated]

Jailbreak iPod Touch On iOS 4.2.1 Redsn0w

As promised, iPhone Dev team has released a new version of Redsn0w - a popular jailbreaking tool, which brings native support for iOS 5.0.1, fixes the iBooks issue in iOS 5 and iOS 5.0.1 and lots more.

Redsn0w 0.9.9b9b will also allow users to downgrade using iOS 5.x. SHS blobs.

Dev team have provided the following details on their blog:

The holiday season is almost here (Happy Holidays!) so we realize everyone is busy (especially @pod2g!).  And even though we always recommend that jailbreakers stay where they are until a new untethered JB comes out, that’s not always possible.  So we’ve updated redsn0w for those who may have found themselves at iOS 5.0.1, and added some other useful features too:

  • native support for 5.0.1 (no need to point redsn0w at 5.0 IPSW or use command-line args).  Support automatically extends to all of redsn0w’s various functions: “Jailbreak”, “Just boot”, “Fetch blobs”, “Stitch blobs”, “Recovery Fix”
  • iBooks fixed in 5.0 and 5.0.1.  This is a targeted fix that doesn’t remove entire sandbox mechanism.  5.x users already using redsn0w “Just Boot” can just use the new version without redoing entire jailbreak again
  • 3GS old-bootrom owners can now create custom IPSWs without blobs
  • ultrasn0w compatability update (i.e. same baseband requirements) for 5.0.1 will be available on Cydia Monday
  • support for newer 8GB iPhone4 (which until now had problems with “Fetch blobs”).  Thanks to @JKjeepnJeff for loaning us one of these newer i4 units for testing!
  • allows Windows users (not just OS X users) to use the “Custom” button to create IPSWs without baseband updates.
  • accommodates APTickets in 5.x (until next Apple countermove).  APTickets are crypto-verified before submitting to Cydia, just like the main blobs.  Cydia server support for sending back the APTickets is upcoming.  For now, use stitched IPSWs for 5.x.  Due to APTickets, stitched 5.x IPSWs now require user to start in “Pwned DFU” mode
  • Support added for stitching 4.x blobs to iPad2-GSM IPSWs.  Similar to @notcom’s TinyCFW but doesn’t require lots of RAM or a TSS-assisted restore. Won’t work for iPad2 5.x blobs (or iPhone4S at all) until a bootrom-level exploit is out
  • top line now shows whether (and where) a redsn0w update is available, or if the version being run is the latest.  Uses DNS TXT record to alleviate any concerns about snooping
  • no 5.1 beta support at this time (major apps like Cydia are not yet compatible)
  • @pod2g has been doing a great job porting his 5.x untether…check his blog for updates!
  • Owners of newer 3GS iPhones must not flash the iPad baseband.  The iPad baseband will not work on 3GS iPhones built later than 2011 week 35.  You have a week 35 or later device if your serial # starts with xx135.

Redsn0w 0.9.9b9b supports the following iOS 5/iOS 5.0.1 devices:

Redsn0w 0.9.9b9b supports only a tethered jailbreak for iOS 5.0.1, except for iPhone 3GS with old bootrom which is untetherd. It doesn't support iPad 2 and iPhone 4S. After you have jailbroken their iOS device, one can use the SemiTether hack, which allows users to reboot their tethered jailbroken iOS 5 device without the need to connect it to the computer.

We'll update the our step-by-step guides to jailbreak iPhone, iPad and iPod touch running on iOS 5.0.1 with the latest version of Redsn0w shortly.

Update: iPhone Dev team has updated Redsn0w again to fix some issues:
Update #17b: Version 0.9.9b9b enables the “Custom” button for Windows users, and make the 3GS week 35 warning a more explicit part of the process.
Update #17c: For those Windows users encountering launch errors due to the self-update check, please use this version instead for now.
Update #17d: iPhone3GS owners in our comments section below noticed a problem with the untethered jailbreak available for the old-bootrom 3GS. We’ve corrected that problem in 0.9.9b9d. If you have an old-bootrom 3GS and have already used last night’s redsn0w on it, you can re-run it again without losing anything. Just use this new version, go to Extras->IPSW and manually select the 5.0.1 IPSW, then go back and Jailbreak it again (but you can uncheck Cydia because it’s already installed).

You can download the latest version of Redsn0w using this link for Mac and this one for Windows.

Windows who are facing launch errors due to the self-update check, please download this version.

As always let us know how it goes in the comments.

hey! To all the testers and known hackers. I have a lot of iphones. My family are apple fanatics! but anyways. i would like to contribute to the community to future its progress. This is the second post with acknowledgement to the lack of supply (iphone) for hackers. Maybe i can help. Please email me or reply to this message if i can help. I encourage everyone reading this to contribute too. If this is a true “iphonehack” community we should all do our parts.

Thank you again for all your hard work!!!!
    Kevin B

I don’t understand; I thought the untethered jailbreak was imminent so why release an updated version of the tethered jailbreak. Makes no sense.

This is a copy and paste from the article above that you didn’t bother to read before you wrote your comment. (And even though we always recommend that jailbreakers stay where they are until a new untethered JB comes out, that’s not always possible. So we’ve updated redsn0w for those who may have found themselves at iOS 5.0.1, and added some other useful features too:)

You didn’t really answer his question or make any type of point there.. I’m gonna go around and tell commenters to read articles. It’s fun Kinda like the help desk guy that tells people to use the help file…
i have the same question, why?? Didn’t they post videos two weeks ago of the uTJB working on 4 and 3GS??

  3. Stan says:

There are many things in life that makes no sense… we just have to learn to live with it.
Make no mistake – there is someone out there that finds this update very useful.
Learn to live with others decisions ;-)

  4. Guerrero says:

The dev team seems desperate to do everything BUT what everyone truly wants to hold out for more donations the longer the better eh?

What happened to george hotz? He got things done

    • Stan says:

Well, one could imagine that things are a bit slow because of guys like Geohot no longer support the jailbreak community. But don’t be fooled, Geohot will eventually emerge from nowhere again with some goodies. He’s a true genius in hacking and I refuse to believe he’s gone forever just because of an interim Job from Apple. No way bro! ;-)

  5. Neil says:

I simply don’t understand why we always have readers wanting to jump straight in to undermine the work that Dev team etc do for free to keep the jailbreaking momentum going. How would you feel if you spent all your free time before Christmas working on updating tools but got rewarded by such negative remarks? As a minimum we all owe it to thank the few remaining hackers rather than piss them off. if these hackers were to leave the scene then the community would be left at the mercy of apple.

    • The Force says:

…because they are ignorant noobs. They think all you have to do to jailbreak is press a button not realizing that someone has to write the code for the button and what it does before it can be pushed.

  6. Chocogow says:

I dont understand if people like the dev team why are they all ways calling them fakers we are a hack community we should support them dont you remember iOS 4 they took a little its true but once they got a hang of ios 4 this site whas posting like crazy ios4 unthethered jailbrakes and look ios 5 has not that much exploits you are lucky that pod2g found one f*ck all the haters

    • lostark says:

Some people must feel they are entitled to the work that others do regardless of the fact that it’s donated time and effort. I’d be curious to know what those who are bellyaching have contributed anywhere lately (or ever.) STFU unless you’ve put your money or your time where your mouth is.

  7. Beep says:
