iMAME – Free Arcade Machine Emulator For iPhone And iPad Briefly Available In The App Store [Updated]

iMAME - a free MAME emulator for iPhone and iPad is now available in the App Store.

Update:

iMAME has been removed from the App Store.

MAME - Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator is a popular arcade machine emulator that can run reproduce arcade games with images of the original arcade game's ROM and disk data.

Here's a brief description of iMAME from the App Store:

iMAME is an application designed to recreate the hardware of arcade game systems in software on modern personal computers and other platforms. The intention is to preserve gaming history by preventing vintage games from being lost or forgotten.

It comes preloaded with the following ROMs:

  • Circus
  • Crash
  • Fire One
  • Hard Hat
  • Robot Bowl
  • Side Track
  • Spectar
  • Star Fire
  • Targ

Touch Arcade points out that you can easily add ROMs using iExplorer:

It seems that the same method used to get games into iDOS also works in iMAME. Twitter user @mattlukens mentions, "Yep, add a .zip rom to the Docs folder through PhoneView and it works perfect! Just tried Crime Fighters!" He also provided a screenshot. The clock is really ticking now on Apple pulling this down

Jim VanDeventer - developer of iMAME has mentioned that the iOS emulator has not been officially endorsed by Nicola Salmoria or the MAME Team so it looks like it has slipped through the approval process.

So grab it as soon as possible to play your favorite arcade game on your iPhone or iPad from this App Store link before it is pulled from the App Store.
