How to Jailbreak iPad 2 Using Absinthe For Mac [iOS 5.0.1 / iOS 5]

greenpois0n absinthe

Chronic Dev team has just released the most eagerly awaited greenpois0n Absinthe to jailbreak iPhone 4S and iPad 2.

In this guide, we will take you through the step by step procedure to jailbreak iPad 2 running iOS 5.0.1 or iOS 5 using Absinthe.

Here are some important points to note before you proceed.

  • This guide is meant for iPad 2 users. iPhone 4S users can checkout this step-by-step guide, which a number of readers have used to successfully jailbreak their iPhone 4S. iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS users can checkout this guide, iPod touch users can checkout this guide and iPad 1 users can checkout this guide. We'll publish a guide for iPad 2 users shortly.
  • This guide is meant for Mac users. Windows users can checkout this step-by-step guide.
  • Absinthe performs an untethered jailbreak.
  • Please note that jailbreaking your iPad may void your warranty and hence proceed with caution and at your own risk.
  • Please do not forget to backup your iPad before you proceed. You can refer to this post for instructions on how to backup your iPad.

Step 1: Download Absinthe from this link and save the application in a folder named "Absinthe" on your desktop.

Step 2: Double click the Absinthe zip file and extract the application to the Absinthe folder. Navigate back to the Absinthe folder and launch the Absinthe application.

Step 3: After launching Absinthe, click on the Jailbreak button.

After clicking on the Jailbreak button the tool will give a progress update on the various stages of the jailbreak process such as:

"Beginning jailbreak" (note this can really take sometime - in our case this step took more than 10 minutes on our iPad 2, though it was lot quicker on iPhone 4S)

"Sending initial data" at this time you will notice that "Restoring in Progress" message on your iPad 2 (this can also take a long time - in our case this step took more than 15 mins)

"Waiting for reboot"

"Waiting for device to finish rebooting" as your iPad 2 is rebooting.

"Preparing jailbreak data"

"Sending payload data" (this can also take a long time - in our case this step took more than 15 mins)

Step 4: In the end you'll be prompted with the message informing you that the jailbreak is "Almost done - just unlock the screen if necessary, then tap "Jailbreak" icon to finish.

Step 5: Unlock your iPad. The icon you should look for is the Absinthe icon and not "Jailbreak", it may not be on the first home screen page so you're better off just searching for it using Spotlight.

Step 6: Launch the Absinthe app. It should load the greenpois0n site and reboot your iPad 2. After it is rebooted, you should see the Cydia icon.

That's it, your iPad 2 is successfully jailbroken.

Troubleshooting tips:

Here are some troubleshooting tips if you hit an issue while jailbreaking your iPad 2 with Absinthe:

1. A number of readers have reported that they're getting "Error establishing a database connection" error message while loading the site or are seeing a white screen when they launch the Absinthe app. If you get that error message or white screen, the following trick seems to work:

  • Launch the Settings app
  • Then tap on General, followed by Network and then tap on VPN, here you will get "A configuration error occurred" message.
  • However after a minute, your iPad 2 will reboot and you should be able to see Cydia icon your iPad 2's home screen.
2. If it still doesn't help, just reboot your iPad 2 and start the process all over again. It may also be a good idea to disable your passcode when you try again as the tool gives a warning request that jailbreaking is most likely to fail if passcode is enabled (don't forget to enable it though after your iPad 2 is successfully jailbroken).
3. Ensure you've updated iTunes to the latest version (iTunes 10.5.3).
4. If you think it is taking a long time (or get the feeling that Absinthe isn't doing anything) then be patient. Check out the timings mentioned by us above for some of the steps.
5. If tips 1 and 2 don't help then iPhone Dev team has advised restoring your iPad 2 (which is not ideal). But our advise would be to try again after sometime as it could be very well due to the load on the servers.
6. If you've subscribed to iTunes Match, but having problems playing music after jailbreaking using Absinthe then try to disable iTunes Match (via Settings -> Music -> iTunes Match -> On/Off toggle) and enable iTunes Match again. It seems to have resolved the issue for some users. Note: It does not wipe the songs that were downloaded on your iPad.
7. Fix for grey Jailbreak button:
A number of readers have reported that their iPad 2 isn't recognised after launching Absinthe and the Jailbreak button stays grey. Reader R Wass has a tip to fix this issue. He writes:
If you are having the problem where you cannot click jailbreak on absinthe with your device plugged in, start your mac in safe mode.  You do this by turning it off and starting it back up while holding the shift key, then launch absinthe after it starts in safe mode. You should now be able to click jailbreak when you plug in your device. it worked for me.
Thanks Wass for the tip!
8. If you think App Store is not working after jailbreaking using Absinthe, please be patient, it has taken a long time for some users, but it eventually loads fine. You can also try to reboot tour iPad to see if it helps.
If you're still having issues head over to IRC, pod2g and the Chronic Dev team are providing support on #greenpois0n on irc.chronic-dev.org. Please don't forget to drop us a line in the comments to tell us how your issue was fixed for your benefit of your fellow readers.
After the jailbreaking process is complete, do not forget to checkout our article on tips to keep your iPad secure.

If you're new to the jailbreaking world and wondering what to do after jailbreaking your iPad, checkout our jailbreak apps category page to find out the apps you can install on your iPad using the Cydia app. Please note that some of the jailbreak apps and tweaks are still not compatible with iOS 5/iOS 5.0.1 so please be cautious while installing them.

Assuming you’re using windows, start a command prompt and type “netsh winsock reset”, then press enter. Reboot your computer and try again.

    • J.o. says:

If you’re stuck at the beginning of the Absinthe jailbreak for a while and progress bar hasn’t moved in the last 20-30 mins. Well, here’s an easy fix.

Close Absinthe and slide to unlock your phone and go through all “setup options” until you get to the home screen of your iPhone (do not backup yet, just continue WITHOUT BACKING UP FOR NOW).
Go to Settings and “Erase All Content and Settings”.
Now close iTunes on your computer when the device reboots and do not backup yet.
Now slide to unlock your phone again and go through all the options until you get “Activating Phone” screen comes up.
Wait for your phone to active (may take a couple minutes), then STOP.
Don’t click anything more on your iOS device.

  31. Snapman says:

As usual, the jailbreaking coders rock. I sent them $25 to say thanks.
Here’s my experience: iPhone 4S needed to go to the VPN settings, turn ON VPN, then wait for the connection to have its error popup show up. Tap OK to dismiss the popup, then the phone reboots on its own and Cydia is installed. iPad 2 got as far as VPN settings to turn on VPN, but it didn’t do anything afterwards. Rebooted iPad and restarted Absinthe on the Mac, it found my previous jailbreak and recovered from it. Restarted Absinthe on the Mac again, and got as far as the VPN again, but this time it rebooted on its own after a minute. Result: two jailbroken iDevices. Rock on jailbreak team!!!

  32. Jeff says:

    Damn it i have windows!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  33. eladio says:

    • Nai1951 says:

Check your Hosts file – if you used tinyumbrella to save your 4.3.3 blobs then run the program, select advanced and untick the option about hosts file on exit (or similar).

  34. Eric says:

Hi all, I also failed in 1st, 2nd, 3rd times. Then I follow tips 1 & 2 and try again.
Finally it works (ipad is rebooted) after pressing the new icon.

ONE thing very very important is that you need to have internet access open (I am via WIFI) at that moment. I did not connect to internet for prevous failed case.

Hope this can help the one having

    • Ipadhelp says:

Hi, had the same problem! If you go to settings>general>usage>music then delete all your songs and re dl them from iTunes (for free) it works!!!

Have to do it like that u can’t delete them individual from music

      Spread the word!

This works for people who aren’t subscribed to iTunes match, I’m not sure if it works for people who have subscribed … So u will have to try

    I have ipad 2 wifi-3g
Can i jailbreak it with this app?

  47. Mack says:

Jailbreak runs. Absinthe app is there, opens and goes to the webpage. iPad reboots. NO CYDIA APP. jailbreak worked perfect on my iphone 4S. Will not produce the cydia app on the ipad. Please HELP!

  48. Danny says:

Only problem I’ve had with the JB, is that music (I’m assuming music bought from iTunes as I don’t have any music that isn’t from iTunes) doesn’t play…

  49. Const says:

took 2 minutes, zero issues! amazing!!

  50. Canuck says:

I had minor glitches but in the end it worked great on my iPad 2.

I ran Absinthe through VMware on Lion (no Mac and the Windows version wasn’t available, at the time) It took about 20 min.
I had white icons and corrupted graphics but after opening Settings my iPad rebooted and it fixed the icons but not the corrupted graphics. I removed and reinstalled Iconoclasm and everything worked great after that.

For people doing an upgrade from 4.3.3.
-First do a backup of your Cydia setup.
-Take screenshots of your sources or write them down (if you’ve added any).
-Install a backup program, such as Xbackup and backup your system. Once it’s done, copy the backup file to your computer.
-After Absinthe is done, run Cydia and enter your sources again.
-Install xBackup and copy the file back to your iPad, in the same folder on the iPad ( i think it was /var/mobile/library/xbackup/backups) So the app can find it.
    -Run Xbackup and tap Restore.
