How to Jailbreak iPad 2 Using Absinthe For Mac [iOS 5.0.1 / iOS 5]

greenpois0n absinthe

Chronic Dev team has just released the most eagerly awaited greenpois0n Absinthe to jailbreak iPhone 4S and iPad 2.

In this guide, we will take you through the step by step procedure to jailbreak iPad 2 running iOS 5.0.1 or iOS 5 using Absinthe.

Here are some important points to note before you proceed.

  • This guide is meant for iPad 2 users. iPhone 4S users can checkout this step-by-step guide, which a number of readers have used to successfully jailbreak their iPhone 4S. iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS users can checkout this guide, iPod touch users can checkout this guide and iPad 1 users can checkout this guide. We'll publish a guide for iPad 2 users shortly.
  • This guide is meant for Mac users. Windows users can checkout this step-by-step guide.
  • Absinthe performs an untethered jailbreak.
  • Please note that jailbreaking your iPad may void your warranty and hence proceed with caution and at your own risk.
  • Please do not forget to backup your iPad before you proceed. You can refer to this post for instructions on how to backup your iPad.

Step 1: Download Absinthe from this link and save the application in a folder named "Absinthe" on your desktop.

Step 2: Double click the Absinthe zip file and extract the application to the Absinthe folder. Navigate back to the Absinthe folder and launch the Absinthe application.

Step 3: After launching Absinthe, click on the Jailbreak button.

After clicking on the Jailbreak button the tool will give a progress update on the various stages of the jailbreak process such as:

"Beginning jailbreak" (note this can really take sometime - in our case this step took more than 10 minutes on our iPad 2, though it was lot quicker on iPhone 4S)

"Sending initial data" at this time you will notice that "Restoring in Progress" message on your iPad 2 (this can also take a long time - in our case this step took more than 15 mins)

"Waiting for reboot"

"Waiting for device to finish rebooting" as your iPad 2 is rebooting.

"Preparing jailbreak data"

"Sending payload data" (this can also take a long time - in our case this step took more than 15 mins)

Step 4: In the end you'll be prompted with the message informing you that the jailbreak is "Almost done - just unlock the screen if necessary, then tap "Jailbreak" icon to finish.

Step 5: Unlock your iPad. The icon you should look for is the Absinthe icon and not "Jailbreak", it may not be on the first home screen page so you're better off just searching for it using Spotlight.

Step 6: Launch the Absinthe app. It should load the greenpois0n site and reboot your iPad 2. After it is rebooted, you should see the Cydia icon.

That's it, your iPad 2 is successfully jailbroken.

Troubleshooting tips:

Here are some troubleshooting tips if you hit an issue while jailbreaking your iPad 2 with Absinthe:

1. A number of readers have reported that they're getting "Error establishing a database connection" error message while loading the site or are seeing a white screen when they launch the Absinthe app. If you get that error message or white screen, the following trick seems to work:

  • Launch the Settings app
  • Then tap on General, followed by Network and then tap on VPN, here you will get "A configuration error occurred" message.
  • However after a minute, your iPad 2 will reboot and you should be able to see Cydia icon your iPad 2's home screen.
2. If it still doesn't help, just reboot your iPad 2 and start the process all over again. It may also be a good idea to disable your passcode when you try again as the tool gives a warning request that jailbreaking is most likely to fail if passcode is enabled (don't forget to enable it though after your iPad 2 is successfully jailbroken).
3. Ensure you've updated iTunes to the latest version (iTunes 10.5.3).
4. If you think it is taking a long time (or get the feeling that Absinthe isn't doing anything) then be patient. Check out the timings mentioned by us above for some of the steps.
5. If tips 1 and 2 don't help then iPhone Dev team has advised restoring your iPad 2 (which is not ideal). But our advise would be to try again after sometime as it could be very well due to the load on the servers.
6. If you've subscribed to iTunes Match, but having problems playing music after jailbreaking using Absinthe then try to disable iTunes Match (via Settings -> Music -> iTunes Match -> On/Off toggle) and enable iTunes Match again. It seems to have resolved the issue for some users. Note: It does not wipe the songs that were downloaded on your iPad.
7. Fix for grey Jailbreak button:
A number of readers have reported that their iPad 2 isn't recognised after launching Absinthe and the Jailbreak button stays grey. Reader R Wass has a tip to fix this issue. He writes:
If you are having the problem where you cannot click jailbreak on absinthe with your device plugged in, start your mac in safe mode.  You do this by turning it off and starting it back up while holding the shift key, then launch absinthe after it starts in safe mode. You should now be able to click jailbreak when you plug in your device. it worked for me.
Thanks Wass for the tip!
8. If you think App Store is not working after jailbreaking using Absinthe, please be patient, it has taken a long time for some users, but it eventually loads fine. You can also try to reboot tour iPad to see if it helps.
If you're still having issues head over to IRC, pod2g and the Chronic Dev team are providing support on #greenpois0n on irc.chronic-dev.org. Please don't forget to drop us a line in the comments to tell us how your issue was fixed for your benefit of your fellow readers.

If you're new to the jailbreaking world and wondering what to do after jailbreaking your iPad, checkout our jailbreak apps category page to find out the apps you can install on your iPad using the Cydia app. Please note that some of the jailbreak apps and tweaks are still not compatible with iOS 5/iOS 5.0.1 so please be cautious while installing them.

Hi all, is it possible to do this without a mac?

I only have pc’s and my iPad

    TIA

I’m starting to think half these posts are frauds and lies, especially those who happen to brag how thier JB went along in seconds. Why post it if not to brag. Anyway, tried absinthe on Windows7, XP, and the Mac (lastest OS and latest iTunes) and still fail. Either the app just sits there with grayed out buttons or the returned some dtrap junk on the mac. Tried running it from terminal, still no go. I refuse to clear my iPad knowing full well it will not work. I think this JB should NOT be released until clear instructions are posted in black and white as to how we can get around these bugs. I am highly disappointed as this is the 2nd or 3rd iteration of this hyped up JB that does not work on any of my 4 machines. What gives? Also, what are the requirements? iTunes? what version, O/S? then what version. Just pluging in my iPad is not enough

    • Nanook says:

Furthermore, what state does the iPad have to be in? home? DTU? broken? sick? I’ve cleared VPN, and even removed my passwords.. still fail. tried 3 different usb cables, even went as fart to verify that my usb comm is not on charge.. still fail. Does itunes need to open just as I plug in the iPad or does this so called absinthe do a port scan and detect the ipad? Every site I go to is laden with advertisements and links to viral sites. Does the windows version of the JB truly work or just for show? Anyway, I’m going to sit here and wait for apple to once again laugh at this JB joke, patch us to 6.0.1 and the cat and mouse junk happen again.

Too bad it’s not working for you! I just tried te break my Ipad free yesterday….and it did….without any errors. Please note that I’m not quite an expert, but with the tutorial given in Dutch (my native language) it was working fine, and within ten minutes.Hopefully you’ll get it working.

  3. Canuck says:

I’m not sure why you’re having problems but I had my iPad 2 on 4.3.3 and I first did a complete backup, in itunes. Then i did an upgrade to 5.0.1 and then I restored my iPad from the backup.
Since the Mac version was the only thing available I fired up Lion in VMware and ran Absinthe and jb’d. At first I thought it stopped working as it was taking a long time but I didn’t notice that the program said that the rest needs to be done on the iPad by running the jailbreak program, meaning that you then run the Absinthe app.

I had a few glitches, which were solved by going into Settings at which point the iPad rebooted and then removing and installing iconoclasm cleared up the rest of the glitches.
It’s been a day and half and everything’s been working fine.

All of my main apps (i.e. Safari, the App Store, Music, and Video app) all disappeared… Same with cydia… Help?

  5. ipadhelp says:

i jailbroke my ipad2 last night

i am not subscribed to ipad match
nd my music is not playing!
    i tried rebooting and all!
    HELP!

    • RTCola says:

Did you figure anything out here? I’m having a problem with my music where it isn’t playing the songs (seems to be for songs I downloaded on my ipad) and my playlists are fickle, not letting me edit or only edit sometimes.

  6. Tony says:

This has to be the quickest JB I have ever done. It took me 10mins to JB my Ipad2 without any issues. But, I also would like to say that I did it right out of the box. The only app i had installed was atomic web browser and Hulu Plus. No music and or movies. After all was done, then two apps still worked afterwards. I have been JB breaking my Iphones since the beginning and have had my share of issues along the way but, this was simply the easiest and fastest! I still need to update my Iphone 4 to 5.01 and JB but, for now IM happy even at 4.2.6..

  7. PC says:

what can i do if i stuck on Preparing jailbreak data??
and then the software jump out by itself!
    help!!

  8. victor says:

I’m stuccoed on ”looks like you’ve attempted jailbreak before – unplug and plug your device again”.

It happens every time I try to do it.

  9. victor says:

Now every time ”Absinthe closed unexpectadly” i’ve tried like 20 times and didn’t work
i’m on Mac OS X 10.7.2 trying to jailbreak an iPad 2 wifi 5.0.1
