Leaked Parts Suggest iPad 3 May Look Like iPad 2 With Retina Display, Improved Rear Camera & More

iLounge's Jeremy Horwitz who had revealed some interesting details about the iPad 3 late last week now reports that he may have seen "what's supposedly the next generation iPad" yesterday, a day before CES 2012 that kicked off in Vegas.

He hasn't seen the actual next generation iPad of course, but he seems to have got his hands on the leaked iPad 3 parts.

Horwitz provides the following details about the Apple's third generation iPad based on the leaked parts:

  • He starts off by saying that it is difficult to make out its the new iPad as it looks very similar to iPad 2.
  • The new iPad is slightly thicker than iPad 2 (by 1mm)
  • The rear camera has become bigger and silver ringed. iPad 3 is expected to come with an improved camera - possibility even iPhone 4S's 8-megapixel camera, but without LED flash.
  • iPad 3 looks exactly the same as iPad 2 from the front except for the screen. iPad 3 is expected to get a high resolution Retina Display like iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S.
  • According to one of his source, the screen could be slightly smaller than iPad 2 but Horwitz's wasn't able to confirm it.
  • Switch, button, speaker, and other elements located on the side edges are all the same, as are the headphone and Dock Connector ports.
  • He expects most iPad 2 accessories to work fine with iPad 3 except for the cases, which may have issues due to the minor changes in the design.

Based on these changes, Apple could call their next generation iPad - iPad 2S or iPad HD but the internal changes such as faster processor, more RAM and Retina Display could justify the iPad 3 moniker.

Horwitz's hasn't provided any details about internal changes. He also cautions that the rear shell that he was saw was probably manufactured around 6 months back so lots could have changed.

I don’t get the impression that what I saw was just manufactured—it actually seemed to be more than half a year old. That’s not a huge surprise given how long pre-production takes for a “new” device, but a lot can change between mid-2011 and early 2012.

You may remember that iLounge were the first to show leaked photos of iPad 2 last year, so these rumors could turn out to be true.

Though we're not too excited about an improved rear camera as we find it too weird to use an iPad to take photos, we can't wait to get our hands on an iPad with Retina Display and it would be quite safe to say it would be faster and more powerful.

Are you waiting for iPad 3? What do you think about the possibility of the third generation iPad that looks like iPad 2 but comes with Retina Display, improved cameras, faster processor and more RAM?

I just got done setting up CES one booth in particular was the iLUV booth which had ipad3 cases on hand which I did take pictures of. Nothing real exciting though!

iPad 2 design is perfectly fine for me. All I care for are: retina display, 2x RAM and new processor. 100% purchase for me if these show up. Other upgrades like better camera front+back are nice but not really necessary for me.

It’s interesting to see the black plastic gone though. How are they going to get the WiFi/3G signal in/out?

Complains how iPad One doesn’t have a camera and states that it is vital, then this “Though we’re not too excited about an improved rear camera as we find it too weird to use an iPad to take photos.”

    People.

      Just for the record:
We complained about the lack of front facing camera in iPad 1 and here we are taking about the rear camera.

We don’t think many iPad 2 users use the rear camera. So a higher resolution rear camera won’t be exciting news for them.

On the other hand, an improved front facing camera for FaceTime HD would be awesome.

The rear camera is not just specifically for “hey I’m out sight seeing let me whip out my Ipad and snap a pic!!” I use it all the time for say when I need to post something on ebay, I can take a pic of the product and bam post away. Nop sense in going back wards if your gonna release a new product upgrade everything!!

Yes, I’ll buy the next iPad a s a p as I am using my ipad 1 every day and still have resisted the temptation on getting the #2. High res display, more RAM and storage together with M$ Office package is high on my wish list! Rear camera not so interesting but still good to have around. Not worth thickening the device for though. The #2 seems fast enough but I guess we’d need more power to drive the high res. Hopefully older lower res apps will look as nice as on the #2 though as it might be useful to maintain speed in some 3D games. You don’t really need higher res for those. Battery time has been awesome and I believe essential for future upgrades as well.

As long as it just redesigned of ipad2, I wont buy it. My ipad 2 still good enough for me, at least if it compare with android :)
