Chronic Dev team has just released greenpois0n Absinthe to jailbreak iPhone 4S and iPad 2 for Windows.
In this guide, we will take you through the step by step procedure to jailbreak iPad 2 running iOS 5.0.1 or iOS 5 using Absinthe for Windows users.
Here are some important points to note before you proceed.
- This guide is meant for iPad 2 users. iPhone 4S users can checkout this step-by-step guide. iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS users can checkout this guide, iPod touch users can checkout this guide and iPad 1 users can checkout this guide.
- This guide is only for Windows users. Mac users can refer to this step-by-step guide.
- Absinthe performs an untethered jailbreak.
- Please note that jailbreaking your iPad may void your warranty and hence proceed with caution and at your own risk.
- Please do not forget to backup your iPad before you proceed. You can refer to this post for instructions on how to backup your iPad.
- Please ensure you've updated iTunes to the latest version (iTunes 10.5.3).
- Warning: There have been some complaints of users losing their camera roll, so please ensure you've backed up your iPad before proceeding.
Step 1: Download Absinthe for Windows from this link and save the application in a folder named "Absinthe" on your desktop.
Step 2: Double click the Absinthe zip file and extract the application to the Absinthe folder. Navigate back to the Absinthe folder and launch the Absinthe application.
Note:
Please launch the application as an Administrator. Right Click on the Absinthe exe and select the "Run as Administrator" option.
Step 3: After launching Absinthe, you will be prompted to connect your iPad 2.
Note:
a. Please disable the passcode temporarily to jailbreak your iPad (Settings -> General -> Passcode Lock -> Turn Passcode Off).
b. Please also remove any VPN settings that you may have configured on your iPad.
Step 4: Absinthe should detect your iPad and also mention the iOS firmware that is running on it. Click on the Jailbreak button.
After clicking on the Jailbreak button the tool will give a progress update on the various stages of the jailbreak process such as:
"Beginning jailbreak" (note this can really take sometime - in our case this step took more than 10 minutes on our iPad 2, though it was lot quicker on iPhone 4S)
"Sending initial data" at this time you will notice that "Restoring in Progress" message on your iPad 2 (this can also take a long time - in our case this step took more than 15 mins)
"Waiting for reboot"
"Waiting for device to finish rebooting" as your iPad 2 is rebooting.
"Preparing jailbreak data"
"Sending payload data" (this can also take a long time - in our case this step took more than 15 mins)
Step 5: In the end you'll be prompted with the message informing you that the jailbreak is "Almost done - just unlock the screen if necessary, then tap "Jailbreak" icon to finish.
Step 6: Unlock your iPad. The icon you should look for is the Absinthe icon and not "Jailbreak", it may not be on the first home screen page so you're better off just searching for it using Spotlight.
Step 7: Launch the Absinthe app. It should load the greenpois0n site and reboot your iPad. After it is rebooted, you should see the Cydia icon.
That's it, your iPad 2 is successfully jailbroken.
Troubleshooting tips:
Here are some troubleshooting tips if you hit an issue while jailbreaking your iPad 2 with Absinthe:
1. If you get "Error establishing a database connection" error message while loading the site or are seeing a white screen when they launch the Absinthe app then use the following trick:
- Launch the Settings app.
- Then tap on General, followed by Network and then tap on VPN, here you will get "A configuration error occurred" message.
- However after a minute, your iPad 2 will reboot and you should be able to see Cydia icon your iPad 2 home screen.

I use newest version and go through smoothly until ‘tap Absinthe’ icon and wait for reboot, but after about 10mins, it doesnt reboot automatically. Any idea?

I’ve done everything that was told step by step and i also read all your comments. I d/l the version 0.3 and it went well till the ‘preparing jailbreak data…do not touch your device yet!’
then after a minute or so it pops out another window saying ‘absinthe.exe has stopped working’

Been trying for 2 days to jailbreak my ipad 2.
I followed the steps and every time I try Absinth, it shuts down in the beginning saying “Looks likes you attempted to apply this Jailbreak and it failed. We will try to fix it”
I reset and restored my ipad and the Firmware on my ipad is 5.0.1, my itunes is 10.5.3.3, and when I try to restore the firmware with Shift+Restore I get a 3194 error on itunes so I can’t…

Figured it out. (Had to do with a setting on tinyUmbrella. Now I just need to figure out how to restore from icloud.
If my iPad 2 is brand new and hasn’t had anything done to it (no new apps or documents added, etc.) then do I still need to back up my iPad before jailbreaking? (Sorry if this is a dumb question, I’m techno-challenged.)
i have already jailbreak my IPAD 2 but when try to connect vpn to finish jailbreak it’s appears VPN connection “a configuration error occurred” and when run absinthe msg error URL couldn’t be found

I have been trying to JB after i restored my new ipad 32gb wi fi and when I get to the step where it says unlock your screen and click the absinthe icon…. i do not have the icon… any help please ?
it was great i bought may ipad with 4.3.5 versain and was really sad about its jailbreak because it was 3g and wait really lot foo 5.0.1 jailbreak and finally got it.
i suggest to restore your ipad before jailbearking because it makes it faster(under 10 min)

Hi! I did all the procedures and it worked out perfectly fine.
But then I tried to add some apps from iTunes, just like I used to do with my previous jailbreak (for iOS 4.3.3) and it failed. I already tried to delete the app from iTunes and add it again and still not working.
If u could help me out with it, it would be awesome. Congrats on the jailbreak, btw, it is easiest and most practical one I’ve ever seen.

I have followed the exact steps and my jailbreak went through successfully on my Ipad 2 A5 device however after the reboot the absinthe logo did not turn into Cydia so now i’m stuck with a jailbroken device with no Cydia, Can’t restore through itunes as it’s an A5 device and absinthe wont re-jailbreak as it says this is already done. Please I need urgent help as to how i can get cydia on my ipad 2?
