Chronic Dev team released a new jailbreak tool called Absinthe to jailbreak iPhone 4S and iPad 2 yesterday.
If you hit any problems while or after jailbreaking your iPhone 4S or iPad 2 using Absinthe then checkout our troubleshooting tips, which should help in resolving them. It includes a fix for the annoying issue where Absinthe does not recognise the iOS device, which results in the Jailbreak button being greyed out.
Here are some of the tips that have helped a number of readers:
1. Please ensure you're using the latest version of Absinthe - its currently 0.2. You can download it using this link for Mac and this link for Windows.
2. In case you haven't used our step-by-step guide then check them out to ensure you've following the correct procedure:
3. Ensure you've updated iTunes to the latest version (iTunes 10.5.3). 4. Fix for grey Jailbreak button: A number of readers have reported that their iPhone 4S/iPad 2 isn't recognised after launching Absinthe and the Jailbreak button stays grey. Reader R Wass has a tip to fix this issue. He writes:If you are having the problem where you cannot click jailbreak on absinthe with your device plugged in, start your mac in safe mode. You do this by turning it off and starting it back up while holding the shift key, then launch absinthe after it starts in safe mode. You should now be able to click jailbreak when you plug in your device. it worked for me.

White Screen or Error establishing a database connection error: A number of readers have reported that they're getting "Error establishing a database connection" error message while loading the site or are seeing a white screen when they launch the Absinthe app. If you're still getting that error message or white screen when you use Absinthe tool v0.1.2-2, then the following trick will work:- Launch the Settings app.
- Then tap on General, followed by Network and then tap on VPN, here you will get "A configuration error occurred" message.
- However after a minute, your iPhone 4S will reboot and you should be able to see Cydia icon your iPhone 4S home screen.
6. Disable Passcode Temporarily:
If it still doesn't help, just reboot your iPhone 4S and start the process all over again. It may also be a good idea to disable your passcode when you try again as the tool gives a warning request that jailbreaking is most likely to fail if passcode is enabled (don't forget to enable it though after your iPhone 4S / iPad 2 is successfully jailbroken).
7. If you think it is taking a long time (or get the feeling that Absinthe isn't doing anything) then be patient, it took more than 45 minutes to jailbreak our iPad 2 using Absinthe. Check out the timings mentioned in our step-by-step guides for the timings for some of the steps.
8. If troubleshooting tips 1 and 7 don't help then iPhone Dev team has advised restoring your iPhone 4S if you don't care about unlocking (not the ideal solution though).
9. If you've subscribed to iTunes Match, but having problems playing music after jailbreaking using Absinthe then try to disable iTunes Match (via Settings -> Music -> iTunes Match -> On/Off toggle) and enable iTunes Match again. It seems to have resolved the issue for some users.
10. If you think App Store is not working after jailbreaking using Absinthe, please be patient, it has taken a long time for some users, but it eventually loads fine and should work without any issue. You can also try to reboot tour iPhone to see if it helps.

I have a problem, the SMS received dont show up in the SMS repository, i can only open the sms on the Notification Area
Jailbreaked 4s easily, installed iLocalis and some ios 5.0.1 compatible cydia apps, including SBSettings.
Now i cannot see the SMS on the list, iv rebooted and same. Some app icons are also white, like buggy feel. Something is wrong but i cannot know why, iv unninstalled barrel and its the same so thats no the problem.
Any Guesses?

I’ve tried everything, including updateing iTunes to 10.5.3. I am still getting the error message “The Application Absinthe quit unexpectedly” when I try to open the Absinthe app on my Mac. I am running Leopard 10.5.8
it will only run on snow leopard and up for whatever reason

What happens if I jailbreak it with a friends Mac? It will obviously have to be synced to my iTunes on this Mac…
If Absinthe is still quitting out even after a “safe mode” reboot… Switch to a guest user account (in safe mode) and try it then. Worked for me… Hopes this helps
i have the same problem with my ipad2 and iphone4s, i get a blank screen from absinthe! therefore by following the guide my ipad2 or iphone4s should reboot if i turn VPN to ON however all i get was an error message and nothing else.. some people say that the server is overloaded, well i would love to know the exact reason so as i would know whether to restore my iphone or wait till the server is relief from the load.(:

Make sure you have saved and unzipped Absinthe to a folder. Won’t work if you click the file on the desktop.

I did install Cydia, but it wont load sources, I cant put any source ??? any help!!!

If i’m not mistaken, some of the dream team members actually upgraded their mac to snow leopard and lion before they wrote absinthe. Maybe they forgot absinthe compatibility in leopard. I hv no problem using it in my lion.

Without safe mode… absinthe just stares at me.
With safe mode it absinthe crashes and has a lengthy error report.
So Safe mode did do something .. just not enough. Something is gumming up the works somewhere… Do appreciate any tips others have… and thanks again Wass .. its progress….

Is there a fix for the camera roll using the windows version… Jailbroke no bother just lost my camera roll…… Tried the reinstall as suggested but to no avail ?????
I have the same problem. I’ve heard that you have to rerun the jailbreak twice again to get the camera roll back, but this didn’t work for me.

I have a problem that after executing command “cinject.exe -j payloads” It failed in restoring files with line that “recv: Bad file descriptor. FATAL: Assertion failed : got == sizeoff 1266″.
Is anyone else having random icons going blank? A respring does fix the issue temporarily but it comes back on different icons.
Blank icons aren’t one of the issues Im experiencing. But there ARE issues.
Just trying to figure out if theyre Absinthe issues or tweak issues.
Worked fine with my 4s and Cydia launches with no problems, but my phone and mail icons are white. Seems like a random thing just reading through the posts. I’m using my MB Pro w/Snow Leopard 10.6.8.

Absinthe tool v0.1.2-2 still crashes on my MBPro running 10.6.8. It begins to JB then after a progress bar of about 20% it hangs and eventually crashes. Latest iTunes installed as well. Numerous attempts, same results. Is there a RedSnow version available for the Mac yet?
Did you backup and then restore to a brand new 5.01 before running Absinthe?

I am so glad i gave back the iphone 4s to vodafone, it had battery issues like mad. And now jailbreak issues and lengthy precedures. My iphone 4 has been jailbroken without these issues whilst still holding very good battery life, i am not willing to sacrifice ease of use and good battery for a poxy 8 megapixel camera and siri

Just jailbroke my 4s and it ran smooth until I installed iFile and now my music library is all jacked up. I erased everything to do with iFile but still having the issue. I click on one song and it shows the album cover but plays a different song and some songs wont even play

I have an Ipad 2 5.0.1. When I launch cydia it comes up “Network error. Unable to load. (the request timed out.)” on the homepage and when trying to download an app. all apps and sources are shown but no sources can be added and no apps can be installed. Please help. Tried rejailbreaking and restarting.

My Jailbreak on IPAD 2 is about done when absinthe crashes as soon as absinthe starts to send info. Windows crash dialog box pops up saying “absinthe.exe has stopped working” any help on this?? Obv using a windows laptop (vista 32bit) ..

Hi, I bought an iPod 2 and I jailbreaked it before. I tried to download the iOS 5.0.1 from the Settings icon on my iPad 2 but then my iPad wouldn’t turn on anymore and it kept on showing a screen with an arrow pointing to an iTunes symbol. I later learned that this was the recovery screen so I tried to put it out of the recovery mode by pressing the home button and power button simultaneously, but the screen kept on returning back to the recovery screen. I could not restore the iPad 2 on iTunes either, so I downloaded Tiny Umbrella 5.10.01 and tried to save the shsh. However, under the recovering devices section on the left side, my iPad did not appear and I only got a device titled ?18092….. I tried to save the shsh of this ?18902… anyways but this did not work. So, I clicked on the device and pressed the exit recovery but then my iPad2 screen went black with a white apple logo in the middle. This logo keeps on dimming and disappearing and even when I plug my iPad 2 to the computer, neither my iTunes nor the Tiny Umbrella notice it. I need urgent help!
