Samsung Galaxy Note Super Bowl Ad Mocks Apple Fans

Samsung Galaxy Note ad

While the patent war are playing out in the court rooms, Samsung has aired another TV ad  as part of the “The next big thing is already here” series during the 2012 Super Bowl last night, which again pokes fun at Apple fans standing in the line for the new iPhone.

Unlike previous ad, which promoted Samsung Galaxy S II, this one promotes Samsung Galaxy Note, which features a 5.3 inch WXGA (1280 x 800) screen, 1.4GHz dual core processor, 16GB Internal memory + microSD (up to 32GB) and supports 4G LTE networks.

MacRumors reports that Samsung head of marketing has acknowledged that Samsung is directly targeting Apple.

“Especially in U.S., people are obsessed with Apple,” Lee said, in a lengthy interview at the Consumer Electronics Show earlier this month. “It’s time to change people’s attention.”

What do you think about Samsung’s Galaxy Note Super Bowl ad? Do you think Samsung’s approach of mocking Apple fans and potentially their customers will work? Please share your views in the comments section below.

Not only will it not work it will only make the rift bigger

    • Patanjali

The ad was marginalising the extreme behaviour of a very small minority of Apple buyers and NOT the great majority of current Apple mobile users who would NEVER identify with those who wait hours in line for a device. Even then, a way out of that behaviour was offered. Samsung knows they will never change the buying habits of those convinced that an unfamiliar Apple device is worth substantial inconvenience to buy, but there is a lot of ‘swinging voters’ out there who did not have much choice the last time they bought a smartphone.

This is unlike the Mac vs PC ads which basically said ALL PC users were dorks and not hip. Those ads basically did not change the computer buying habits, as to be expected when you do directly insult your target buyers.

The blogger and some commenters need to critically analyse ads so that they understand who is being targeted and how the ads is trying to achieve that. And, of course, not assume that everybody is extremely gullible, otherwise Apple’s popularity is just because of people mindlessly following their ads.

Not only will it not work it will only make the rift bigger. They don’t realize the only way to win over a fan is to actually build a better product…

I have owned a Samsung product in the past. Wait until there is a new operating system on the market. The Samsung phone WILL NOT get the update. My product was less than 3 months old when the new op system came out. Samsung said it was up to the carrier to upgrade it. The carrier said it was up to Samsung to update it. Still no update. GO APPLE. P*ss off Samsung your terrible.

My first thoughts on seeing that commercial were, wow that’s too big, and, why would I go back to using s stylus?

It’s funny to read this, iPhone 3G/3GS/4 users won’t get Siri… Sounds familiar?

      • JohnJackson000

The 2.5 year old 3GS has the latest iOS5. Any update is better than none, am I wrong?

      • Wiilt

thats a hardware constrint. plus, thats what you pay extra for in the 4s

      • anomynus

At least they did give updates to 3GS. Most other manufacturer didn’t have this “firmware updating” built in mind for most of their products anyway. You can argue that more variety, but what is with variety if there is no maintenance to the system? At least Apple did care about about the products they put up for sale and took the responsibility to manage and maintain it. Unlike other companies that just sells phones for money and when you get it, that’s it. You know why there is Apple cult thing around? Because they care about customers, that’s why. They connect to people in many ways sometimes through things like updates. updates might be a small thing but it shows how much you care about your customers. Other companies should really learn from Apple in firmware updates and maintenance. They didn’t even do it for their “Premium” phones most of the time and they expect people to be loyal to them. Shame. ”
If you don’t know people, you don’t know business.”
This is the thing most companies don’t get and keep banging their heads on the wall why the could not keep up with Apple’s sales in smartphones and tablets. tsk tsk tsk. shame on the big companies that didn’t get it and end up whining losing to Apple.

  • Mchael

Stylus really??? Doesn’t the next big thing means going foward not back to a 10 year old technology that everybody ends up losing anyways and they were point less… Samsung u suck.

This ad is the joke of the year.

  • Ratheart

    It has a PEN!?
Wow by all means lets flock towards a pen….

  • Mikey

Ad is a little shallow. But I picked up a Samsung tablet a few months ago. I’m open minded enough to enough both. I like that Note though… Hmmm

  • Simon

Seems like Samsung think its a good idea to rip on the very people they are trying to win over. They need to concentrate on building a better product not one that feels all plasticky and sh*tty in your hand.

    • http://www.elsuridesktop.com.ar il Santi

They’ve already built a better product, I guess you didn’t see the Galaxy S2…

      • JohnJackson000

Better camera? Better sound quality? Better support? Better GPU? Bettery battery life? What a joke.

      • Hopstradamus

Apparently il Santi either works for Samsung, or is blind. Galaxy S2, as with most Samsung products, are cheaply made. And correct me if I’m wrong, but haven’t we spend the last 20 years of cell phone development making smaller, nicer products? Why is Samsung trying to convince people a bigger screen is better? If I wanted to carry a laptop in my pocket, I would. And let’s not even get started on the fractured OS that is Android. I have 5 friends who had an iPhone, went over to Samsung thinking “bigger was better” and are now pleading with anyone to take their S2 so they can go back to iPhone. Cheaply made is cheaply made, no matter what kind of commercial you pay for.

        • John

Its funny how good of a job Samsung did in mimicking Apple fanboys, you sound like that guy waiting in line in their commercials haha.

          • jer

I once too walked around with an apple stamped on my head…..and after the same phone being released 4 years in a row I saw the light, or should I say saw the little green man lead the way

  • Simon

  • Leo

Samsung really needs some of that apple’s good taste

  • Richard

I have owned both devices, right now I have the Samsung Infuse. I have seen good arguments from both sides. Apple needs to step up their game, and Samsung needs to better support their devices instead of just throwing them away. I love my Infuse and I’m running a custom gingerbread port cause Samsung/at&t suck at support. Can’t wait to get my hands on the Note.

  • dman

I love the commercial lets face it, it’s pretty comical how us Apple fans stand in line for their products…. I will be purchasing one of these for my wife.

    • Paradox

Not that I stand in lines .. I just wait a couple days … I have some pertinence… However, there is a reason there are lines for apple products….. Its not fanboyism, its the demand of the product. If samsung was making a decent dent in the industry, people would be waiting in lines for their products too.

Its a simple factor of supply and demand. Less people demand samsung hence larger supply no lines… More people demand apple products, hence supply shortages, hence lines for those not willing to wait a few extra days or couple weeks if need be.

Myself … I wait a couple months until the bugs are worked out of any system and actual consumer reports are published.. Operating systems from Windows to OSX. Electronics from tablets to phones… the products rarely are released without significant bugs. as for reports… we all know beta testers, and review forums with early reviews often are biased. I am more interested in what the people using the devices have to say.

The “note” seems nice at first, and could be good competition for kindle fire and smaller tablets. As a consumer that utilizes my tablet like a laptop/netbook in the classroom, I think I would still prefer the larger screen of the iPad.

For your wife who wants something bigger than a phone but can still slip it in her purse .. by all means this looks like a wonderful product….

    • JohnJackson000

Comical? Did Apple invent queue lines? The only thing I find comical is that the Note comes with Gingerbread.

  • Marc

The Next Big Thing is Here – coming 2/14/2012 (at least that’s what it had at the end of the Canadian version). So it is NOT here!
And why aren’t there line-ups? Because people aren’t flocking to their products.
Those dim enough to fall for such advertising deserve what they get – an inferior product.

    • Wite Boy

same could be said about people that got the 4s from a 4

      • JohnJackson000

Yes the 4S is a worst phone than the 4… whatttttt…

  • Dinks

Come on people these ads are tired and all you can see is a cheap imitation of an Idevice, this is tasteless…Copy Cats!!!

    • Paradox

Is there a 5.3 inch iDevice?

Its nice for what it is, but the add should reflect on the device not at apple products. Its not related to the apple marketplace as it currently stands. Its in a class of its own or maybe in the class of Kindle Fire or PDAs. I agree the adds are however ludicrous as they focus more on what apple is not than what there device is. I would not buy any of these devices based on what was demonstrated in any of their adds. From a marketing campaign they “fail”” in my opinion.

    • http://www.elsuridesktop.com.ar il Santi

Yeah, because the “new” notification bar on the iOS 5 is an original idea. Android has it since preliminary launch.

      • JohnJackson000

Yes people should be focused on that because Samsung DOESN’T design their devices to look anything like iDevices.. I mean white phone? ORIGINAL!!!!11

  • Jason

You guys are nuts. That commercial was awesome. The made a whole since and dance number while one idiot stayed in line for a f’n iphone. I don’t need to tell you that was based on a true story :S.

  • Gerard

Let me get this straight, Samsung realizes Apple products are top notch. So they come by the lines to give theirs away. The people that left the line went to sell the those free Samsung products on eBay do they can save some money on the iPhone.

Funny how all these companies are making white phones now. They will never have my respect because they take no chances, they copy the hit product and try to act as if they pioneered it.

    • dman

LOL I’m pretty sure Apple wasn’t the first to put out a white phone.

  • http://www.cyclades.com Danny Kennedy

Apple Sucks just want to make the money. For Samsung Android for free watching??

    • JohnJackson000

What business doesn’t want to make money?

  • David

Okay, this is not exactly how you go about wooing new customers or existing customers of Apple products. This taunting, making fun of, teasing, etc., is cute to all those Galaxy fans, but that is it. I now will be sure never to try a Samsung product because they are making fun of “me”. I do take it personal (…well not really), but if that is the best Samsung’s marketing can come up with, then it is clear they need to go back to high school and work out some of their personal issues on the playground! That “Pen” reminds me of the days of HP iPaq and Stylus’s, which were also used when I was in high school! Wow, not really inventive Samsung! Get with the times and stop ripping off the idea’s and come up with something original. Even your OS on galaxies is Googleware! Which by the way those owners of Galaxy variations, good luck getting an updated OS!

  • iWontreplyback2u

You must admit that Samsung has been making SUPERIOR products than Apple for past 2 yrs or so (coming from an iOS guy), don’t bash me, just research its technical specs Samsung phones and you to it that it is truth.

    • Paradox

I lok at specs before purchasing anything , but sometimes specs aren’t all they are cracked up to be. Sometimes you just need to feel the device and interact with it before making a decision.

That being said; I found the samsung product line a bit sluggish compared to the iPhone and iPad. Better looking screen, a bit crisper than the iPad. But when it comes to phones, I think I would sooner go with the Motorola Razor than Samsung, if I was in the market for an android device. Right now I have a Mac, Macbook, and iPad; So the natural choice for me is iPhone for ease of integration. If I was still primarily using my PC and alienware laptop, motorola would win out vs samsung.

    • JohnJackson000

Superior? Specifications are a pretty shallow way to compare devices. There’s more to a phone than that. For example look at this RMAA audio benchmark:
      http://st.gsmarena.com/vv/reviewsimg/apple-iphone-4s/gsmarena_a001.png
      http://st.gsmarena.com/vv/reviewsimg/samsung-i9100-galaxy-s-ii/gsmarena_a001.png

  • http://smartphonegeeks.in/ DJScope

    HAHAHAHA “Freedom!!!!!!!” Thats classic.

I dunno about you guys but I personally like the Samsung ads. Nothing wrong with healthy competition. At least theyre not suing Apple and trying to get them off the market.

  • Scott

A pen. I would never go back to a pen based smart phone. I went with an iPhone because of HTC, Microsoft, and that damn pen.

  • @iTaos

OH a pen!? Wow samsung you really got apple this time!

  • jieshi

samsung is just a F*cking copycat!

  • Zed Sefi

There is something that Samsung will never get. No matter how hard they try, they will never understand while Apple is on the top and they will never beat this. Apple is NOT selling a product. Apple is selling a service, and the service is called: User experience and satisfaction, the total value of Apple, which Samsung and other competitors are too blind to see it.

  • Mike

Apple fanboys dissing the samsung commercial very typical anyways the commercial was funny and I will be getting my girlfriend and myself a Galaxy note.

    • anomynus

It is very true my friend. Apple is selling User experience and satisfaction, the total value of Apple, which Samsung and other competitors are too blind to see it and not just Apple, but most big companies around the world. They, most of the time, put profit before customer satisfaction, which is not really good idea in the long run. You see, Apple spend time building a brand and product that is good and special. They might have ripped most of the things the have now off others ideas, but they have beautifully executed it. We live in the world where we share all the things around us. It would be absurd to apply copyright laws and patent rules in every aspect of life. You wont be watching movie with your friend if you go just by the copyright law. the copyright law practically says that you and only you can use it and any sharing without the consent of the copyright holders is illegal. get what I mean?
Tablet has been around even before iPad and smartphones has been around too before iPhone, in fact you have blackberry and others. But what made it a success? You must start thinking about it. Resistive touch screen smartphone, who would have thought of making such a phone before iPhone came out? NO ONE! NO ONE is willing to take risk. Do you know that Nokia, the biggest phone making company out there actually rejected the what would be “iPhone” idea outright when they 1st propose it to the higher ups in Nokia? Then Apple came with the world’s 1st touchresistive phone “iPhone” and made billions on it and what do the other companies do? They start panicking. and started to want to do things like apple but don know how or need to much time to get to what Apple is now.

The point I am trying to make here is, if you put money making forward 1st, you will run out of money. however, if you put your product forward 1st, making sure that it is a good product, then the money will come AUTOMATICALLY. This is the 1 thing Apple did right. Most companies just wanna make money and dont care about the thing they are making most of the time. And they whine when they dont make enough money.

“If you don’t know people, you don’t know business.” Business starts from people, this is what Apple got right. They value customers and give them a sense of superiority and a sense of power in their products. This is what made successful. You should ask yourself : How did this Apple fanboy and cult started anyway? Why no Sony people , Dell people, Samsung people but Mac people? And note that Apple did not participate actively in forming these cults and fanboy groups, they gather together, and there is not that much of choice in Apple’s arsenal in terms of product variety. But why is those with so much to offer failed to have such things? Think about this before you throw out statements with “Fanboy” and “cult” things, be it those siding Apple or not. You are all missing this point. You DONT GET IT. that is why you sprout nonsense and sh!ts.

  • chris

apple’s adds are all about what the device can do in a every day world either in a work environment or as entertainment device. They show you what the device can do and what is made to do….an apple device is made from apple from the ground up. from parts to os to the box apple owns the co’s that make everything in there products so they have control of the user experience. also every year apple makes the device more and more environment friendly and recycleable.
Yes samsung has a point waiting in line sucks and it is boring however if it was not worth it would we wait for 7 hours to get a phone…..Yes some people see a iPhone as a status symbol but the amount of people that buy them are mind blowing is retail sales $$$$. So if they must make fun of the people that are in line for the next idevice let them, not like there will be a 7 hour line to get a note when it ever gets to the usa….I will say one last thing…i watched a youtube review on the note and it looks amazing it is the perfect blend or a iPad and a iPhone if you can deal with a android os on your phone it will get ice-cream sandwich update when it drops and is a beast in the spec department and to tell the truth after the review i thought a bout many getting one as a work line however after the anti-iphone line adds they lost my business because to me the add is all about them getting back at apple and not there products….be proud of who and what you are samsung take the high road and tell me what your phone can do and how it fits in my life and maybe you might just sell some phones…..but he said she said, mine is better then yours, and haha you have to stand in line is just high school drama i left behind years ago…..and what do you think apple thinks about your adds they must be laughing there ass off i know i am…
    just my thoughts

    • Patanjali

And somehow the ‘magical’ of the Apple hype is real? Apple relies on copious laying down of that same message across our screens in prime time, and demonstrates their products with third-party or beta sapps.

Samsung is doing well because they are, across their ad repertoire, focusing upon the devices, rather than things that are NOT intrinsic to the devices.

The superbowl ad was a fluff piece to bring attention to the device. They mocked themselves with the final ‘Well that was over the top’ remark by the one left in line.

What is interesting is that most reviews to date have questioned whether the device had a market, but somehow it has managed to sell a million since November in the few countries where it has been made available. However most users who have made comments in forums and blogs bought them for the use cases that Samsung outlined when they announced the Note last year.

Now they have made it a feature in real prime time. Perhaps the target audience for the Note is a lot larger than originally envisioned. Just maybe, 3.5in is too small a screen for lots of people!

Many people like myself are buying them from overseas (via a local reseller with warranty) at full price, but unlike with queues, where the time advantage is only days, I got to use my device months ahead of when local buyers through telcos will get their hands on the device.

Apple wins…easy. There will not be a line wrapped around the mall for the “note” or whatever its called.

Looks like samsung’s achieved its goal. ” attention ” that’s all. haven’t you wished your phone’s screen to be a little bit bigger (secretly) sometimes?. Yes, IT’S BIG, it’s really NEXT BIG THING. and it has S-PEN (smart pen, whenever you touch the screen with it the screen starts to obey to the S-PEN not to your fingers).Yes, this phone isn’t for everybody(not for kids and not for ..). if you like big you get big one if not you get small one.
