VLC 2.0 Available For Download

VideoLAN and the VLC development team has released VLC 2.0 "Twoflower" - a completely revamped version of their popular media player.

VLC 2.0 includes the following new features and improvements:

  • With faster decoding on multi-core, GPU, and mobile hardware and the ability to open more formats, notably professional, HD and 10bits codecs.
  • Twoflower has a new rendering pipeline for video, with higher quality subtitles, and new video filters to enhance your videos.
  • It supports many new devices and BluRay Discs (experimental).
  • Completely reworked Mac and Web interfaces and improvements in the other interfaces make VLC easier than ever to use. Mac users get a completely new, single window interface.
  • Twoflower fixes several hundreds of bugs, in more than 7000 commits from 160 volunteers.

According to the changelog, it looks like VideoLAN is also working on porting VLC 2.0 to iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. However, there is no ETA on when the iOS app will be available in the App Store.

VLC 2.0 is currently available for OS X [10.5 (both Intel and PowerPC machines) or later] and Windows (XP SP2, Vista, and 7). You can download it from this link.

VLC has been my only video player for years; it’s simple and opens almost everything. And, unlike WMP, it doesn’t try to call home every time you blink. I’m sure 2.0 has been done up right.

Why is VLC app not on app store?

    • Because says:

Because Apple requires that the app have the FairPlay DRM attached and when the app was originally on the store, contradicted the terms of the GNU license, allowing them to share the software.

It plays everything I’ve tried but could use some updates

‘Students made it long ago,’ said Rincewind. Handy way in and out after lights out.’ ‘Ah,’ said Twoflower, ‘I *understand*. Over the wall and out to brightly-lit tavernas to drink and sing and recite poetry, yes?’ ‘Nearly right except for the singings and the poetry, yes,’ said Rincewind.
