How to Install iPhoto And iMovie on iPhone 4S / iPhone 4 / iPad 2 on iOS 5.0.1

Last week, alongside the third generation iPad and new Apple TV, Apple showcased a number of apps that took advantage of the improved hardware of the new iPad.

One of them was iPhoto for iOS, which brings advanced photo editing capabilities to the iPad, using touch based gestures.

But even though iPhoto is also compatible with iPhone 4S, iPhone 4 and iPad 2, it requires iOS 5.1, which means that if you’ve not updated your jailbroken iPhone 4S/iPhone 4 or iPad 2 to iOS 5.1 due to the warning from iPhone Dev team, then you won’t be able to use it.

Thankfully, there is an easy workaround to install iPhoto on your jailbroken iPhone 4S, iPhone 4 and iPad 2 on iOS 5.0.1.

All you need to do is follow these simple steps:

  1. Launch iFile jailbreak app (in case you don’t have it, you can install it from Cydia)
  2. Navigate to /System/Library/CoreServices
  3. Tap on the SystemVersion.plist file and select Property List Viewer from the list of options
  4. Tap on ProductVersion
  5. Change the value from 5.0.1 to 5.1
  6. Navigate back and tap on the Done button
  7. Respring your iOS device
  8. Now launch the App Store and you should now be able to install iPhoto. (If you still get “This app requires iOS 5.1” error message then kill App Store from the multitasking tray and try again)
  9. After it is successfully installed, follow steps 1 to 7 to revert back the ProductVersion back to iOS 5.0.1
  10. Then launch Cydia
  11. Tap on the Search tab and type iPhoto501Fix (without installing the fix, iPhoto kept crashing on the iPhone 4S for us)
  12. Tap on iPhoto501Fix from the search results
  13. Then tap on the Install button, followed by the Confirm button.

After it is successfully installed, you should be able to launch iPhoto on your iPhone 4S, iPhone 4 or iPad 2 on iOS 5.0.1.

You can follow similar instructions to install iMovie (this trick will also work on iPod touch 4G).

As always, let us know how it goes in the comments.

in step 5, Change the value from 5.0.1 to 5.1 shouldnt that be change it from 5.1 to 5.0.1?

    • Grammar Nazi

No, this is for people who are on 5.0.1 and want to install iPhoto. So we have to trick iTunes into thinking we are on 5.1.

  • hmmm

my bad, your changing the iphone os firmware not the apps plist..

Just done the steps and got I photo installed on my iPhone 4 but it seems to have affected my signal. I had full signal before changing the product version from 5.0.1 to 5.1, now I changed it back, still no signal

  • Jawad

I followed the steps and it works on my ipad2 however only on the ‘effects’ button the app crashes, any solution for this?

    • Omran

Yes exactly. It crashes on effects. guys we need a solution for this.

  • Ariel

Im stucked with Step11.Tap on the Search tab and type iPhoto501Fix (without installing the fix, iPhoto kept crashing on the iPhone 4S for us)

    – no results found when searching iPhoto501Fix

    • Kill Cydia running in the background from the multitasking tray and try again. You should fine iPhoto501Fix this time.

  • Ridiculocity

Worked perfect on iPad 2 now will try my iPhone 4 🙂

    • Juan Silva el Delfin

Me funcionó muy bien el truco en mi iphone 4, gracias por el truquito…muy bueno y facil

  • Donina

Step 11 ist not possible. I have Cydia removed fom background. Searching for iPhoto501Fix brings no result. If I am boring?

  • Anthony

worked fine over here on my 4s

  • iMolen

    it’s not working for iMovie

    • moodi

it is working. Respiring will not do it you have to reboot and it will be installed and the 501 fix from Cydia will do the rest.

Both iphoto and iMovie are working in both my iPhone 4S and iPad 2

  • Mohamad Khodor

successfully installed and running on 5.0.1 with one flaw …when you take new photo with the camera and you launch the app, it will take time “updating photo list” very weird !!!! i don’t know if that’s normal or not…

  • jailbreaker

not sure why but my app store catagories is now in chinese after installing cydia tweak & even after removing iphoto501fix it still hasn’t fixed it……any fix for that or is it just me?

  • Neanicu

Iphone hacks, this method is very long and totally unnecessary, not to mention that besides paying 7$ for Iphoto, you have to pay another 10$ for IFile. Just get the Iphoto for 5.1 from the Appstore and download Iphoto 5.0.1 fix from Cydia. That’s it!

    • May be you missed it, you can’t install iPhoto on iOS 5.0.1 unless you change the version in the SystemVersion.plist … this post and the fix for iPhoto wouldn’t have been required if you could 🙂

      • vic72

Not exactly – succesfully downloaded iphoto on ios 5.0.1 from insyall0us and installed it without changing the plist. Installed the fix from Cydia and succesfully run iphoto on iPhone 4 5.0.1.

        • Sorry, this article did not take into account stealing … it is for those who want to buy the app from the App Store and can’t do so on iOS 5.0.1.

  • Works perfectly on my iPad 2, 5.0.1! I got it from Instalous, not from the App Store, and installation run smoothly! Great work!

  • olo

don’t sync with iTunes, since it will firstly ask for activation and secondly erase it from your iOS device…

so far the whole thing is pretty useless unless you only sync with iCloud

    • Maaan

How did you solve this issue?

  • fas

Well what a nice workaround indeed.

  • claude

When I went back to change back to 5.0.1 in ifile it was already 5.0.1 so I retyped it anyway and rebooted but the version in settings still showing 5.1. When I go to ifile it still shows 5.0.1 any ideas?

    • You probably changed the SystemVersion.plist% file, which is the backup file (which is why you also noticed it was still 5.0.1).

You need to make changes in the SystemVersion.plist file.

      • claude

        You were absolutely right thanks!

  • andreas

i can not found “iPhoto501Fix ” have i to add another source to find this ?

  • ///MPower

Perfect. I tried doing a similar fix on my own hoping it would work… but it didn’t. This works great though. Thanks.

  • adude

    Very nice!! Thanks guys 🙂

  • adude

It’s nice to be able to try apps before buying them. This is obviously an app i would invest in if it’s good and i can i can use it. Because to lose it every time a new iOS came out wouldn’t work but still good to be able to try it before buying it. Otherwise that’s money spent for no reason at all!

  • hmmm

for people who cant get ifile, download Diskaid and do it through your computer 🙂

  • hmmm

confirmed, People who have bought the app from app store have more trouble installing it and getting it working than the people who have downloaded it from Install0us as it removes some of the checks 🙂

  • DrKazanovaKK

This worked great, but instead of getting iFile I just used iPhoneBrowser on my PC and edited the file that way.

  • renoy

If u can’t find Iphoto501fix on cydia, try to refresh the cydia source from Refresh button and wait to finish.try to find again

  • David Goh

Wonder if this method of installing iphoto works for IOS 4.3.3 on my Ipad1. I missed updating my IOS to 5.01.

  • jeparo

    perfect… works both apps…!!!!!

  • Yo Mama

Since I did this, I’m unable to boot without redsn0w: (

    • blakedasnake

Then you need to change the systemversion.plist back to 5.0.1.

  • taz_79

Some iMovie feature not work properly on iOS 5.0.1…try making SCary trailer, some scene will appear only blank when you export to camera roll…but not on IOS 5.1…

  • Bas

I have succesfully installed iPhoto following the tutorial. I undid the system version change using iFile (back to 5.01). On reboot I get the message too new version. Also I now experience an error whenever I try to update/install apps, cannot connect to itunes store. Tried to uninstall iPhoto501fix. Unistalled iphoto. No luck so far. Anyone ideas? Thanks

  • aaron

    THANK YOU !!!

  • Ariel

I was able to find Iphoto501fix on cydia; however when I try to install it. it says “Host Unreachable” i also tried to respring my iPhone several times and restart it but no luck.

  • alex

    Stuck on step#3. Can’t find SystemVersion.plist. 🙁

  • blueDreAm
