How to Convert iOS 5.1.1 Tethered Jailbreak to Untethered Jailbreak Using Rocky Racoon 5.1.1 Untether

greenpois0n absinthe

Hot on the heels of releasing Absinthe 2.0 – the iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, the Chronic Dev team has also released Rocky Racoon 5.1.1 Untether jailbreak on Cydia, which allows users who have a tethered jailbroken iOS device on iOS 5.1.1 to convert it into untethered jailbreak.

Chronic Dev team have provided the following details about Rocky Racoon iOS 5.1.1 Untether jailbreak on Cydia:

Rocky Racoon is the underlying untethered jailbreak that will be installed by popular jailbreak tools such as redsn0w and absinthe… if you are using 5.1.1 and you can reboot your device and have it still jailbroken, you have Rocky Racoon.

If your device relies on Rocky Racoon on untethering, which includes any iPad 2, iPad 3 or iPhone 4S running 5.1.1., uninstalling this package will unjailbreak your device.

So if you’ve a tethered jailbroken iOS device on iOS 5.1.1 then you can follow these simple steps to convert it into an untethered jailbreak.

  • Launch Cydia
  • Tap on the Search Tab
  • Then search for Rocky Racoon
  • Select Rocky Racoon 5.1.1 Untether from the search results
  • Then tap on the Install button, followed by the Confirm button
  • After it is successfully installed, reboot your device.
If your iOS device reboots without having perform a tethered boot then you’ve successfully converted your jailbroken device to an untethered jailbreak using Rocky Racoon.

If you haven’t tethered jailbroken your iOS device then you can check out our step-by-step guide to jailbreak your iOS device using Absinthe 2.0:

I have an Iphone 4 , software 5.1.1(9B206) and when i open Absinthe 2.0 it says Device Is Not Supported … can somebody tell me whats wrong ?

    • chris

same here, except im using 4s

  • is there a way to do this same thing for my iphone 4, which has a tethered jailbreak? 5.0.1 firmware. its unlocked with SAM and i wouldnt wanna lose my jb.

    • No, this works only if you’ve a tethered jailbroken iPhone on iOS 5.1.1. It won’t work with iOS 5.0.1.

      • Slick

is there a way to keep apps and tweaks
if iphone 4 is on 5.1 tethered redsnow?

update to 5.1.1 and run redsnow(which is tethered)
then install rocky racoon ? will this work
or is there just no way to keep cydia tweaks?

        • So I just updated my unlocked iPhone 4 from 5.0.1 to 5.1.1. I was jailbroken tethered using redsn0w..I had my tickets saved, since I had originally unlocked my phone (for tmobile) using Sam…I downloaded cyberduck on my Mac ,updated my iTunes and also my phone.. I was going to follow steps that I saw on YouTube in order to unlock my phone again but after I updated my phone to 5.1.1 using iTunes,,, after the restart , I noticed that my iPhone 4 is still unlocked to tmobile.. So I didn’t need to take any steps at all to unlock the device …it’s already unlocked without me even installing cydia…so now I will jailbreak my device, even though it’s already unlocked

if you want an untetherd 5.0.1 then you should download corona untether the same way as rocky raccoon

Iphone 4 ios 5.1.1 thethered jailbroken at shop. Shop said i can only reboot while connected to computer. But i found this method, install Rocky Racoon trough Cydia. Now i’ve rebooted 3 times,no problem. So now i have an unthethered jailbroken phone. If u haven’t jailbroken, there is a new method too.

Help….. I have restored my iPhone 4 about 4 times today and still having trouble jail-breaking my device.
I am using Absinthe 2.0.2 and when I go to jailbreak it comes up saying ‘Looks like you tried to jailbreak and it failed. Will try to fix it”. It then asks to remove the phone and plug it back in again. I do this and then the same message again and it keeps going round in a loop.

I restored and still the same problem.
I also tried jail breaking with Red Snow. This worked but when I downloaded Rocky Racoon it kept saying that my device was not supported, so I was stuck on a tethered boot.

  • Steve

Thanks!!! Used Rocky Racoon to untether iPod Touch 4G, and it worked perfectly. Rebooted several times to be sure. You guys rock!

  • omar
