How to Downgrade iPad 2 on iOS 5.1 / iOS 5.1.1 to iOS 5.0.1 Using Redsn0w

Jailbreak iPod Touch On iOS 4.2.1 Redsn0w

Dev team has released a new version of Redsn0w (0.9.11b1) that allows iPhone 4S and iPad 2 users to downgrade their iOS device to iOS 5.0.1 so that they can use the Absinthe jailbreak to jailbreak their device.

This is a step-by-step guide for users to downgrade their iPad 2 on iOS 5.1 or iOS 5.1.1 to iOS 5.0.1.

Some important points before we proceed:

  • This guide is meant for iPad 2 users, iPhone 4S users can check out this step-by-step guide.
  • This method will work only if you’ve saved your SHSH blobs for iOS 5.0.1 either using TinyUmbrella or had jailbroken your iPad when it was running iOS 5.0.1 and launched Cydia at least once, which would have cached the SHSH blobs on its servers.
  • Please note this method first updates iPad 2 to the latest firmware and then downgrades it to iOS 5.0.1, so in the process it updates iPad’s baseband.
  • Since the method restores your iPad with iOS 5.0.1, you need to go through the process of setting up your iPad from the backup, which will take sometime.
  • Please also make sure you’ve taken a backup of your iPad either to iCloud or to iTunes.
Here’s the step-by-step instructions to downgrade your iPad 2 using Redsn0w:
Step 1: Download Redsn0w for Windows from this link and Redsn0w for Mac from this link and save the application in a folder named “Redsn0w” on your desktop.
Step 2: Download the appropriate iOS 5.1.1 firmware file and iOS 5.0.1 firmware file for iPad 2.
iOS 5.0.1:
iOS 5.1.1:
5.1.1 (iPad 2 Wi-Fi): iPad2,1_5.1.1_9B206_Restore.ipsw
5.1.1 (iPad 2 GSM): iPad2,2_5.1.1_9B206_Restore.ipsw
5.1.1 (iPad 2 CDMA): iPad2,3_5.1.1_9B206_Restore.ipsw
5.1.1 (iPad 2 New): iPad2,4_5.1.1_9B206_Restore.ipsw
Please note both the firmware files are required for the downgrade process. If you’re downloading the firmware files using Safari then ensure that auto unzip feature is disable or use Safari or Chrome to download the firmware files.

Step 3: Please turn off your iPad and connect it your computer.

Step 4: You will now need to put your iPad into the DFU mode. You can follow these simple steps to put your iPad in DFU mode:

(a) Hold the Power button on iPad down for 3 seconds:

(b) Now simultaneously hold the Home button and keep the two buttons pressed for 10 seconds:

(c) Now release the Power button while keeping the Home button pressed until your iPad’s screen goes black or iTunes pops up a message telling you that it has detected an iPad in recovery mode.

Step 5: Double click the Redsn0w zip file and extract the application to the Redsn0w folder. Navigate back to the Redsn0w folder and launch the Redsn0w application. Please ensure that you have launched the latest version of Redsn0w (0.9.11b1).

Windows 7 users should run the exe in Windows XP compatibility mode (right-click on the Redsn0w exe and select Properties, then select the Compatibility tab and select Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows XP). Windows XP and Windows 7 users should run Redsn0w as ‘Administrator’ (right-click on the Redsn0w exe and select ‘Run as an Administrator’).

Step 6: Redsnow will report that your iPad is connected in DFU mode (Connected: iPad 2 (DFU mode)). Click on the Extras button, then click on the Even more button, followed by the Restore button.

Step 7: Click on the IPSW button, here browse to the location you had downloaded the iOS firmware files and select the iOS 5.0.1 firmware file.

Step 8: You will be prompted to select the additional IPSW file. Click on the Ok button and browse to the location you had downloaded the iOS firmware files in Step 2 and this time select the iOS 5.1.1 firmware file.

Step 9: You should now see the build of the iOS firmware file that you want to downgrade to next to the IPSW button.

Step 10: In the next step, you need to retrieve the iOS 5.0.1 SHSH blobs for the downgrade process. If you’ve them stored locally then click on the Local button or click on the Remote button, if you want Redsn0w to download them from Cydia. If you had jailbroken your iPad 2 while it was running iOS 5.0.1 and launched Cydia at least once then Cydia would have cached the SHSH blobs on the server. Redsn0w will show the progress bar as it Fetching blobs from the server.

Step 11: Once Redsn0w successfully downloads the iOS 5.0.1 SHSH blobs, it will start downgrading your iPad 2 to iOS 5.0.1. It will stich blobs, restore to the hacked iOS 5.1.1 firmware and then restore to iOS 5.0.1.

Step 12: If it is successfully downgraded, Redsn0w will prompt you with a message informing you that your iPad 2 has been successfully downgraded to iOS 5.0.1.

You will then need to setup your iPad 2 from the backup. If you’ve any problem downgrading then check out this video tutorial by Jeff Benjamin:

You’re all set to jailbreak it using Absinthe jailbreak. If you need help then check our How to Jailbreak page for the link to our latest guide to jailbreak your iPad 2 now on iOS 5.0.1.

Update 1:

Dev team has released Redns0w 0.9.11b4, which includes some bug fixes, so we’ve updated the download links.

Let us know how it goes in the comments.

Just upgraded my iPad 2 to 5.1.1 for the fun of it and then downgraded it to 5.0.1 … Worked like a charm !! Good job !! Keep up the good work

  • Jebanec

Do you somehow think the firmware for the iPad 2 will work for downgrading the new iPad? Even though it was released as ios 5.1?

    • Jebanec

I see….you still would need SHSH blobs 🙁

  • noel

wow! it works in my iphone 4s downgrading from 5.10 to 5.01… then jailbroken 🙂

  • noel

no need to upgrade to 5.1.1 if you are in 5.01. you can downgrade directly to 5.01 fron 5.1. it works in my iphone 4s. million thanks to developer!

  • Infratse

In my opinion, if pod2g can reserve his exploit for ios 6, no need to release jailbreak 5.1 if redsnow can downgrade to 5.01. It works on my iPhone 4s.

    • Izz

Ooh then he should definately wait till ios 6 because u are the only one that matters?
As long as u have ur jailbreak… Right???

Did u ever think there are people who’s device was shipped on 5.1 so it’s impossible for them to downgrade… Ever thought of ur felow humans??

Jeeeeez… Can’t believe how selfish some turds are.
Did u cought the ion1c fever or what??

      • Infratse

Lol. I’m sorry! I never think of it. Yes you are right!

        • Izz

          Appologies accepted!!!

No really, there are millions ipad 3 users waiting for jailbreak (including me).

          • Andrew

And the downgrade doesnt work for us simple ppl who had no clue to save an shsh blog no we r stuck untill this guy releases a jailbreak

  • olby

how cani get ipad 2 5.0.1 shsh blog

    • Infratse

If you are in 5.01 I think there is no problem. You can directly jailbreak using absinthe. You can save shsh using TU

  • 2lazy

do you need to use Absinthe to jailbreak once downgraded or can this be done in windows?

    • Infratse

Yes, use absinthe like we did before

  • bulter85

at last, the waiting is over.. greatful that it is released already.. million thanx.. keep up the good work

  • Cool

Hi, uhm i have an ipad 2 wifi running on 4.3.2, what can i possibly do to jailbreak my device? Should i update my firmware to the lates version? I haven’t tried jailbreaking this even one. Please help! : (

    • paul

upgrade it to 5.1, then downgrade it to 5.0.1, then do the absinthe jailbreak

if you follow some guides, they are very self explanatory, let’s not act like a baby that needs feeding

      • Cool

Well, thing is downgrading requires shsh blobs and i don’t have one and i think as of now i can’t save my shsh blobs yet.

    • paul

jailbreak the 4.3.2 version first though, so you can save your blobs, or see if there is a way to save them without jail breaking it

      • Paula Tejano

The signing window for that iOS version is already closed. He can’t save the SHSH Blobs anymore.

    • Paula Tejano

Just do the jailbreak for your current iOS version. You can use the website. It’s super easy and you don’t need a computer… Everything is done in the iPad itself.

      • Cool

Jailbreak me doesn’t support ios 4.3.2 though 🙁 on ipad 2

    • Paula Tejano

DO NOT, DO NOOOT update your iOS or you will be unable to jailbreak it until pod2g releases iOS 5.1.1 jailbreak.

  • Zero

I need help.. I’m using Ipad 2 4.3.5.. can i jailbreak my device? i’ve been googling about jailbreaking 4.3.5 but most of them say cannot.. help.. what should i do?

    • Paula Tejano

iOS 4.3.5 only have a tethered jailbreak, if my memory doesn’t fool me. It’s better to wait for iOS 5.1.1 jailbreak.

  • Ben

Do not attempt to upgrade to 5.1.1 just so you can downgrade to 5.0.1.
There is no way for you to get to 5.0.1 as you do not have the shsh blobs.
Either jailbreak the firmware you have or wait till the next available jailbreak before you update.

  • Ben

Downgrade stops and window closes at stitching shsh.
I have all the correct firmware and blobs are save locally and remotely for 5.0.1 but this keeps happening.
Running redsn0w on windows 7. Any help would be appreciated.

    • rgb

Use it as administrator! our compatible mode!

  • mastermind

I do not have the shsh blob saved locally but when i jailbreaked 5.0.1 i had opened cydia but now after upgrading i dont have cydia… (i am on ios 5.1)
but should i try this method\are my shsh blob saved with cydia servers remotely

    • You can find out if Cydia has cached the SHSH blobs by using TinyUmbrella. Launch TinyUmbrella with your iPad connected to your computer and click on the Save SHSH button. You should be list of save SHSH blobs under the General tab. You can also select the “Request SHSH from Cydia” option under the advanced tab to download them locally.

  • Will Beard

GREAT TUTORIAL. Finally easy steps and not Bull S**T

  • Ryan

I am currently on 4.3.0 (Ipad 2) No SHSH Blobs at all.
So should I update it to 5.1.1 or keep it at 4.3.0? Because I don’t have ANY Shsh blobs at all and I heard Pod2g was going to release it for only 5.1.

    • You may want to wait until pod2g releases his jailbreak.

  • Makoy

Does it work on the iphone 4?

My iPad 2 is on iOS 5.1, and I have SHSH blobs for iOS 5.0 with TinyUmbrella (I bought my iPad on 5.0 and was about to jailbreak it but somehow I updated it to 5.1 by accident lol). Can I still downgrade?

  • OS Lovers

TinyUmbrella can’t capture iOS 5.1.1 shsh on any idevices do take note even in Cydia no iOS 5.1.1 shsh

  • Couldn’t find 5.0.1 (9A405) blobs for this device on the Cydia server. Please select “Local” if you have them saved locally.
