How to Downgrade iPhone 4S on iOS 5.1 / iOS 5.1.1 to iOS 5.0.1 Using Redsn0w

Jailbreak iPod Touch On iOS 4.2.1 Redsn0w

While we wait for pod2g to release his untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.1.1 for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, Dev team has released a new version of Redsn0w (0.9.11b1) that allows iPhone 4S and iPad 2 users to downgrade their iOS device to iOS 5.0.1 so that they can use the Absinthe jailbreak to jailbreak their device.

This is a step-by-step guide for users to downgrade their iPhone 4S on iOS 5.1 or iOS 5.1.1 to iOS 5.0.1.

Some important points before we proceed:

  • This guide is meant for iPhone 4S users, we will publish a guide for iPad 2 users shortly.
  • This method will work only if you’ve saved your SHSH blobs for iOS 5.0.1 either using TinyUmbrella or had jailbroken your iPhone when it was running iOS 5.0.1 and launched Cydia at least once, which would have cached the SHSH blobs on its servers.
  • This method first updates iPhone 4S to the latest firmware and then downgrades it to iOS 5.0.1, so in the process it updates iPhone’s baseband. If you depend on Ultrasn0w then you should avoid using this method to downgrade.
  • Since the method restores your iPhone with iOS 5.0.1, you need to go through the process of setting up your iPhone from the backup, which will take sometime.
  • Please also make sure you’ve taken a backup of your iPhone either to iCloud or to iTunes.
Here’s the step-by-step instructions to downgrade your iPhone 4S using Redsn0w:
Step 1: Download Redsn0w for Windows from this link and Redsn0w for Mac from this link and save the application in a folder named “Redsn0w” on your desktop.
Step 2: Download iOS 5.1.1 firmware file and iOS 5.0.1 firmware file for iPhone 4S.
Please note both the firmware files are required for the downgrade process. If you’re downloading the firmware files using Safari then ensure that auto unzip feature is disable or use Safari or Chrome to download the firmware files.

Step 3: Please turn off your iPhone and connect it your computer.

Step 4: You will now need to put your iPhone into the DFU mode. You can follow these simple steps to put your iPhone in DFU mode:

(a) Hold the Power button on iPhone down for 3 seconds:

(b) Now simultaneously hold the Home button and keep the two buttons pressed for 10 seconds:

(c) Now release the Power button while keeping the Home button pressed until your iPhone’s screen goes black or iTunes pops up a message telling you that it has detected an iPhone in recovery mode.

Step 5: Double click the Redsn0w zip file and extract the application to the Redsn0w folder. Navigate back to the Redsn0w folder and launch the Redsn0w application. Please ensure that you have launched the latest version of Redsn0w (0.9.11b1).

Windows 7 users should run the exe in Windows XP compatibility mode (right-click on the Redsn0w exe and select Properties, then select the Compatibility tab and select Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows XP). Windows XP and Windows 7 users should run Redsn0w as ‘Administrator’ (right-click on the Redsn0w exe and select ‘Run as an Administrator’).

Step 6: Redsnow will report that your iPhone is connected in DFU mode (Connected: iPhone 4S (DFU mode)). Click on the Extras button, then click on the Even more button, followed by the Restore button.

Step 7: Click on the IPSW button, here browse to the location you had downloaded the iOS firmware files and select the iPhone4,1_5.0.1_9A405_Restore.ipsw file.

Step 8: You will be prompted to select the additional IPSW file. Click on the Ok button and browse to the location you had downloaded the iOS firmware files in Step 2 and this time select the iPhone4,1_5.1.1_9B206_Restore.ipsw file.

Step 9: You should now see the build of the iOS firmware file that you want to downgrade to next to the IPSW button, which will be iPhone4,1_5.0.1_9A405.

Step 10: In the next step, you need to retrieve the iOS 5.0.1 SHSH blobs for the downgrade process. If you’ve them stored locally then click on the Local button or click on the Remote button, if you want Redsn0w to download them from Cydia. If you had jailbroken your iPhone 4S while it was running iOS 5.0.1 and launched Cydia at least once then Cydia would have cached the SHSH blobs on the server. Redsn0w will show the progress bar as it Fetching blobs from the server.

Step 11: Once Redsn0w successfully downloads the iOS 5.0.1 SHSH blobs, it will start downgrading your iPhone 4S to iOS 5.0.1. It will stich blobs, restore to the hacked iOS 5.1.1 firmware and then restore to iOS 5.0.1.

Step 12: If it is successfully downgraded, Redsn0w will prompt you with a message informing you that your iPhone 4S has been successfully downgraded to iOS 5.0.1.

You will then need to setup your iPhone 4S from the backup. If you’ve any problem downgrading then check out this video tutorial by Jeff Benjamin:

You’re all set to jailbreak it using Absinthe jailbreak. If you need help then check our How to Jailbreak page for the link to our latest guide to jailbreak your iPhone 4S on iOS 5.0.1.

I am guessing that the iPhone4,1_5.0.1_9A406_Restore is not supported??

  • ImadsMoon

    Thank you

  • Geordthi1337

Kinda pointless since pod2G is making his user friendly program for 5.1/5.1.1 now that is compatible for all devices. It should be out in 2 weeks probably give or take a week.

    • Sweeeeet

Pointless? we can downgrade now with out the use of crappy iTunes n having errors!!

  • Shuaib

Awesome man it worked and still unlocked…But will update and jailbreak 5.1.1 and save that shsh blobs for the future well done Musclenerd 🙂 plus the 4S jailbreak on redsn0w is way quicker than absinthe and CLI on windows

  • xrobertrushx

i jailbreaked my 4s on 5.0.1 before, but didnt save my ssh blobs, can i downgrade?

    • kumar

when ever u jailbreak ur device and open cydia it automatically saves ur blobs. so the answer to ur question is yes u can downgrade.

      • juj

man i tried but it didnt i guess i had 9a406 thats why tiny umbrella didnt saved my blolbs it only saves them for 5.1 i need 5.0.1

  • Unknown

Why would u downgrade when the JB will work on 5.1.1/5.1

  • dabloc

On Windows, anyone else getting hung at “Fetching current baseband?”

    • jimtoyz

i do. i’m also stuck at fetching current baseband files

      • kevin

i also stuck what is solution?

  • Anthony

I successfully downgraded my 4S and all but when I try to restore from my backup of my 4S when it was on ios 5.1 to it now on 5.0.1 it tells me my software version is too old in itunes? How do i restore from my back up? someone please help 🙁

    • chris

I had that same problem dude. Youre gonna want to navigate to where your backup files are stored on your computer (if you can’t find them, just do a google search for how to). The folders are hidden so make sure that all of the hide folders options in control panel are unchecked. Then, simply open the file of your more recent backup and locate the plist info file at the very bottom of the file. Then, open the plist file with a plist editor and just change the build number to 9A405 firmware to 5.0.1. Then, close itunes and reopen it and try the restore again. It worked like a charm for me. Hope it helps

      • Yogesh

Chris, you are a real hero.. done this step and restore worked like charm for me as well.

        Thank you!

      • tim

        this help me out also,thanks

      • yae fixed it!

        Thanks for this!

  • Mikey

Yessss! Finally it’s here! Thank you so much DevTeam!!!

  • Allex

i can’t fetch my old shsh blobs on cydia even i already JB it when i got ios 5.0.1 , please help

  • The Truth

Hats off to (Musclenerd) a solution that is highly beneficial and will be appreciated by all.

  • Mickey

iPhonehacks, Will this process save my current baseband on iOS 5.1 or upgrade it? Thanks in advance

  • rmartes

I have never JB my 4S, which is currently at 5.1. I am unable to proceed with step 10 as both buttons to retrieve 5.0.1 SHSH blobs are grayed out. Does this mean I cannot downgrade to 5.0.1?

    • Brandon

Not sure if this will help you since I’m doing this (at the moment) on my mac, but I quit out and started the whole process over and this time the buttons weren’t greyed out.

  • axe

restore failed no matter how i do. DFU mode correct. 5.01 n 5.11 firmware correct. tried local blobs n remote blobs failed. even tried tinyumbrella. Need advice here. Thanks.

    • Axe

Solve. Dg successful. Noticed that i used my wife’s 3gs to tethered wifi to my mac n 4s via usb mode, so i guessed couldn’t connect 2 iphone on 1 mac/pc. If not in my case, dg progress couldn’t pass “waiting for NAND”. The rest before those reacted normal. Really weird. Dev team should look into this.

  • Hubert CKL

Failed to restore at “Waiting for NAND”
    ip4S on IOS 5.1.1

  • lee

hey i have done every right, it loads and my phone shows the progress bar for the first time, when the second progress bar comes up to downgrade it to 5.0.1 it always fails there? i don’t see what I am doing wrong? any idea’s?

  • Thejas

It worked Great loved it i am soo happy yaahoooooooooooooooooooooo……… worked with my iphone 4S

  • Pops

Does it erase all your stuff?

  • Paula Tejano

Worked flawless for me (iPhone 4S with iOS 5.1). The only downside is that iTunes doesn’t allow me to restore my latest backup. It says that my current iPhone software is too old.

Anyway, I have restored it to an older (5.0.1) backup and all done!

    • lee

how did this even work? i am stuck with no clue what to do?! 🙁

      • Paula Tejano

You must use iOS 5.0.1 9A405 (9A406 does not work), then just follow the step by step procedure. If you are stuck in “fetching blobs” progress bar, just close RedSn0w and try again (I have used the Blobs from server, not local). It’s even a workaround for the iTunes backup restore problem… It was pointed out by an user in comments. Just need to edit the backup’s plist file and change the version.

In which part are you stuck? We need details to be able to help you.

        • Shah

          Dear Paula,
I never JB my iphone 4S before. This is first time.
          Running IOS 5.1.1
Run the procedure downgrade from IOS 5.1.1 to 5.0.1, by mistake, mislook the notes about SHSH Blobs. I do not have an SHSH Blobs before.

Please help, what i need to do now?

          🙁 i don’t have any idea.

    • katsuboi

I ran into this problem too. All you have to do is locate the backup folder and edit the plist file with a text editor. Once you gain access to the file, change “5.1” to “5.0.1. Save it and close the file. Reopen itunes choose your recent backup, and that’s it.

      • katsuboi

Oops, just saw someone else posted this solution. Oh well, at least were trying to help each other!

  • dave c

nice one for the video and doing a full video jeff great step by step worked for me and to the guys that make this possible i bow down to you all for doing this in your sapir time and shairing it with us all cant thank you enough

  • cortezsalas

i had downgraded but something went wrong with cydia so decided to restore to 5.1 and then downgrade again and now redsnow says it can’t find my shah blobs I’m like what ???

  • Yeo, Why am I stuck in the “Working…” zone?

  • swatl98

Need help. I just bought a iphone 4s three weeks ago running iOS 5.1. Can I still downgrade to 5.0.1 using these instructions?

    • Paula Tejano

No, it can’t be downgraded because you don’t have SHSH Blobs from 5.0.1. The signing window for that version is now closed, so you can’t do that anymore. You’ll have to wait for the 5.1/5.1.1 jailbreak to be released.

  • jay

fail to restore i had my 4s jailbroken b4 any idea way to do not working need to downgrade

    • jay

was on 5.1 so i updated to 5.1.1 den tried again and it worked so update to 5.1.1 if any problems using the firmware from link above to update.. good luck hopefully this helps any1

      • Hubert CKL

Nice work. I have made the same operation, but it stopped working at “waiting for NAND for 5.1.1”. Tried several times but still stuck at 5.1.1.

  • Allex

Help Please! im cant fetch my shsh blobs ” Step 10 . If you had jailbroken your iPhone 4S while it was running iOS 5.0.1 and launched Cydia at least once then Cydia would have cached the SHSH blobs on the server. Redsn0w will show the progress bar as it Fetching blobs from the server. ” before im using 5.0.1 ios on my iphone 4s but still cant fetch …
right now im at 5.1.1 iOs

    • Derek

Hey man…I have the same problem you had with your iphone 4s I think…just wondering if you found a solution…i had my iphone jailbroken and running on ios 5.0.1 …ran cydia a hundred times…so it should have my shsh blobs on the server…but after upgrading to 5.1.1, cydia is saying I only have 5.1.1 shsh blobs on server….did you ever get any help with this?

  • The Dogman

Hey guys. I have done this downgrade on 4S 64GB from 5.1.1 –> 5.0.1. It worked perfectly but there is the HUGE problem. iOS 5.1.x supports 4G AT&T (version 12) and it runs perfectly on 4S 64GB with iOS 5.1.1. When you downgrade (to iOS 5.0.1 AT&T version 11) you LOSE the 4G Speeds off the AT&T network and also features in the phone app cease to function. Mainly my 3 Way Calling, Call Waiting, and Conference Calling features could not be reactivated or used after this method of downgrade. So PLEASE beware that this is NOT a perfect downgrade solution. I have tested and confirmed these issues with my particular 4S model. If anyone else has these issues I’d love to hear about it. 🙂 Looking back now I wish I hadn’t performed the downgrade because now I am “stuck” with call features broken and no way to be in a “100% working iPhone” jailbroken environment. So PLEASE BEWARE!!!

  • vik

guys please help, i want to know if i can use this method to restore my iphone 4s which is on 5.0.1..m having some problems with my iphone and i need to restore.

  • kevin

On Windows, i getting hung at “Fetching current baseband?”

    solution plz

  • Bernard

Question, When you download the two firmwares do you unzip them right away or do you do so later when you click on IPSW? I keep getting “Firmware” and when I click on it I get three files that seems to do nothing. What am I doing wrong so as to continue when I click on IPSW?
In other words, I downloaded the two restore zip files to the Redsnow file but when I click on IPSW nothing happens. It opens to a fiirmware file and when I open it I get three additional files that seem to do nothing. This is as far as I can get. Help!!!Please what am I doing wrong?

  • Bigtom

  • hbazzi

  • Sam

This worked fine for me but I had to restore from a very very old backup so I lost a lot of app data. Thank goodness for icloud that saves my apps and the fact I have a mac so everything is synced up. Worth the headache of fixing apps and phone settings to get jailbreak back.

  • donbarbarossa

I have followed the steps and downgraded my iPhone 3Gs iOS 5.1.1 to 5.0.1
but now it does not recognized by iTunes anymore, and does not charges.
I figured it out it charges only when its totally off. Can not restore my iPhone now. Tried Erase all content and settings, it goes to a never ending loop then i hard reset it again. Put it in DFU and Restore modes several times but again not recognized.
Please help i can not use my iPhone!!!
