How to Jailbreak iPad 3, iPad 2, iPad 1 Running iOS 5.1.1 Using Absinthe 2.0.4 [Updated]

greenpois0n absinthe

pod2g and Chronic Dev team has just released Absinthe 2.0 – iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak.

In this guide, we will take you through the step by step procedure to jailbreak iPad running iOS 5.1.1 using Absinthe for both Mac and Windows users.

Here are some important points to note before you proceed.

  • This guide is meant for iPad users. iPhone users can check out this step-by-step guide, while iPod touch users can check out this guide.
  • Absinthe 2.0 performs an untethered jailbreak
  • Absinthe 2.0 supports iPad 1, iPad 2 and iPad 3 (the new iPad).
  • Please do not forget to backup your iPad to iCloud or iTunes before you proceed.
  • Please ensure you’ve updated iTunes to the latest version.
  • Absinthe 2.0 is compatible with only iOS 5.1.1, so if you’re on iOS 5.1 or lower (Settings -> General -> About – Version), then you should update your iPad to iOS 5.1.1 either using iTunes or using the OTA software update before proceeding further.
  • Please note that jailbreaking your iPad may void your warranty and hence proceed with caution and at your own risk.
  • Please do not jailbreak your iPad to pirate apps from the App Store

Step 1: Download the latest version of Absinthe from this link and save it in a folder named “Absinthe” on your desktop.

Step 2: Double click the Absinthe zip file and extract the application to the Absinthe folder (Windows users). Navigate back to the Absinthe folder and launch the Absinthe application.

Windows users: Please launch the application as an Administrator. Right Click on the Absinthe exe and select the “Run as Administrator” option.

Mac users: If you’ve upgraded to Mountain Lion, then check out this post to find out how to run Absinthe on OS X Mountain Lion.

Step 3: After launching Absinthe, you will be prompted to connect your iPad.

Step 4: Please disable the passcode as the jailbreak may fail, if the passcode is enabled (Settings -> General -> Passcode Lock On -> Turn Passcode Off).

Step 5: After the passcode is disabled, connect your iPad to the computer. Absinthe should detect your iPad and also mention the iOS firmware that is running on it. Click on the Jailbreak button.

After clicking on the Jailbreak button the tool will give a progress update on the various stages of the jailbreak process such as:

“Beginning jailbreak, this may take a while …”

“Sending initial jailbreak data. This may also take a while…”

“Sending initial jailbreak data.Your device will appear to be restoring a backup, this may take a while…”

“Waiting for reboot … not done yet, don’t unplug your device yet!”

“Waiting for process to complete… “

Step 6: In the end you’ll be prompted with the message informing you “Done Enjoy”. You can now close the Absinthe 2.0 application. The process should take 5 to 10 minutes.

That’s it, your iPad should be successfully jailbroken and you should see the Cydia icon on the Home screen (it may not be on the first page so search for it to locate it).

Update 1:

If you’re having problems jailbreaking your iPhone then following these steps, which will involve erasing all content and Settings.

  • Make a backup of your iPhone in iTunes by right clicking on your iPhone’s name under the ‘Devices’ menu and click ‘Back Up’.
  • Once your backup is complete return to your device and go to Settings –> General –> Reset –> Erase all Content and Settings.
  • Follow the instructions mentioned above from step 1 to step 6.
  • Once jailbroken return to iTunes and restore your backup from earlier. Right click on your device name under the ‘Devices’ menu in the left panel of iTunes and click ‘Restore from Back Up…’ then select the latest backup you created before to restore your Settings, apps, photos etc.
Update 2:
  • If the solution in Update 1 doesn’t work then take a backup of your iPad in iTunes and try to do a full restore and then use Absinthe.
  • Once jailbroken return to iTunes and restore your backup from earlier. Right click on your device name under the ‘Devices’ menu in the left panel of iTunes and click ‘Restore from Back Up…’ then select the latest backup you created before to restore your Settings, apps, photos etc.

I CONFIRM THAT JAILBREAK WORKS AND IS SAFE>.. quite fast too only a couple of mins for me

    • iTruth

      Follow *Updated directions:
      1. Make a backup of your device iTunes by right clicking on your device name under the ‘Devices’ menu and click ‘Back Up’.
      2. Once your backup is complete return to your device and go to Settings – General – Reset – Erase All Content and Settings. This will make the jailbreak process much faster.
(*Additional Important step: Go ahead and go through the initial activation process ON your device eg. choosing languages…activating it as a NEW device all the way up to seeing Apple’s Terms and Condition page. If you don’t do this, then you CANNOT make Step 3 below work!!!)
      3. Open Absinthe and be sure your are still connected via USB cable to your computer.
      4. Click ‘Jailbreak’ and wait… just be patient and do not disconnect your device!
      5. Once jailbroken return to iTunes and restore your backup from earlier. To do so, right click on your device name under the ‘Devices’ menu in the left panel of iTunes and click ‘Restore From Backup…’ then select the latest backup you created before. (restoring this backup will return all the content previously on your device, i.e. apps, photos, etc.)

      • scotty b

about a month maybe- anyway to tell if mine is one that isnt supported yet?

        • Mystic

if it came pre-installed with iOS 5.1 then its the iPad 2,4 with redesigned A5 chip thus not supported

          • Logan

Do you think it will be a while before there is an update to support this Ipad 2,4?? This sucks.

          • stevejobsdie

This is why i hate apple

“recovery complete, if you want to retry jailbreaking unplug your device and plug it back again”

  • Marnsue

not working with iPad 2 R2 ….. this blows!

        • Keith

I’m on a Mac with latest version of Lion, but with an iPhone 4S, tried four times so far. No avail. :(

      • Keith

Are you using Absinthe 2.0 or 2.0.1? An update came out already to fix those bugs. I finally got mine once realizing that. Best of luck!

    • Rami G

what hardware you got? there must be something the rest of us are missing!

seriously….why is ur device working and many of us are not?
      /

      • Rami G

i got ipad2 wifi, using windows 7. have tried at least 10 times now, getting quite frustrated!

        • Diogo

For anyone with the “hmm something seems to have gone wrong” problem:
It happened with my iPad 2 Wi-Fi. I solved it by:
          1. Restauring to 5.1.1;
          2. Loading my iPad backup
          3. Running the jailbreak.
Took 2 minutes for it to complete, without erasing any settings. :)
Hope it works for u guys too!

          • Ari

That’s right! Thanks a lot! People who have the ‘something went wrong’ issue have to restore to 5.1.1.

      • Glu

I got iPad 2 wifi and I used my mac to jb the device. It took no more than 3 mins. Sorry cant help you more than this

      • denv

make sure you are running ios 5.1.1 not ios 5.1

  • ajiq

    thanx a lot jb team….u guys r the coolest…

  • EV

Those that got it going, are yoy using Windows or Mac? Same with the ones that are not working.

    • WtF

I get the same errors too. For both on mac and PC. I got a ipad 2 3g.. I guess I will try it on my ipad 2 wifi once I got it updated to 5.1.1

  • Daniel

I am trying with the 4S iOS 5.1.1 (9B206) on Win 7 and Absinthe stalls on “Waiting for the process to complete” then I get the message “Hmm something seems to have gone wrong, trying to recover”

Anyone got any advice or been able to overcome this problem?

    Thanks.

  • klabelkholosh

Not working for me, same error as most above, goes to “Something has gone wrong..” from waiting on “Waiting on process to complete”. Using OSX Lion 10.7.3, attempting on an iPad 3 WiFi 64gb

  • Maru

    Same issue here.
    Long waiting. Followed by:
“Hmm….something seems to be wrong, trying to recover.” and “Recovery complete, if you want to retry jailbreaking unplug your device and plug it back again.”

    iPad 3 WiFi / Mac OS X 10.7.4

  • klabelkholosh

Saw this on Twitter: Solution for “waiting for process to complete” #Absinthe Full install 5.1.1 via iTunes, works for me

  • Harvey

try this…i think the instructions are wrong…You must change the instructions on the site, after backup you must RESTORE, not erase all settings!!! This resolves the issue!!!

  • nev

not working on my ipad 2 wifi, says not supported. maybe I have a R2..how do I tell?

    • Guest

Seriously. I have the same problem. Help plz.

  • Soul

If JB fails try factory reset your iDevice and then re-JB

    • Dr. Kahn

      Tried that. No luck.

    • Failed

      Didn’t work. Confirmed

  • Failed

Not working in iPad3 for me. After the “Waiting for process to complete… ” message, I’m getting a message “there is something wrong……….. try again”. Tried twice and still nada.

  • maged

    same problem
    ipad 2 gsm , older one ,
    recovery complete error

tried with no sim , same thing

  • klabelkholosh

POSSIBLE SOLUTION FOR “waiting for process to complete” (haven’t tested, but a Twitter user is saying this works): Download a full 5.1.1 OTA file (choose the one appropriate for your iPad), do a fresh install of it via iTunes, then attempt to rejailbreak…

    • aasdasd

      Worked for me, yay! CONFIRMED.

    • spurs027

how do u do a fresh install of 5.1.1 on itunes??

    • callum

do exactly as klabelkholosh said. just tried ota update after struggling for past hour, worked a treat. thanks klabelkholosh.

      • spurs027

but im already on 5.1.1 how do you install it again?

        • aasdasd

          Recovery in iTunes

        • callum

download the firmware, a quick search on google you should find the right firmware, then open itunes, click on your ipad (presuming its already plugged in)

hold shift, and click restore, and select your firmware, let it do the restore.

      • klabelkholosh

        glad to help! :)

        • spurs027

oh, thanks for the help guys trying it now, fingers crossed it works

      • topijermen

oke.. it works.. seriously… thanks.. :)

    • Rami G

fresh install did the trick! thanks buddy your a champion!

  • blondie

I love those guys! I took less than 5 minutes to JB my iPad 2 :)

  • spurs027

yh got the same problem as others while trying to jailbreak on my ipad 3 32gb running 5.1.1. I’ve tried twice and after doing the process it finally gets to the stage where it says “Waiting for process to complete… ” and then says “there is something wrong……….. try again” i’ve followed all the steps, backed and erased all data still didn’t work. Anyone got a solution?

    • alan

me too I’m really piss right now

  • Jordan

Says that absinthe cannot run with this version of windows? I have windows 7 and and everything is up to date? What is going on?

  • William

failed. not working for my new ipad

  • Ton

Guys, read 4 comments over u.
    Make a fresh install before.

  • Griffin

I’m still wondering how I can tell if my iPad 2 is R2 or not. Can anyone answer this for me?

    • Maru

      Check the model number:
      MC954, PC954, FC954, MC989, PC989, FC989
The above six are recognized as “iPad 2 R2″.

      • Griffin

        Awesome! Thanks for the information.

        • Maru

          Pleasure :)

      • Wawa

Mine is iPad 2 wifi, model MC979C, and I am getting message “the device not supported”. I used Absinthe 2.0.1 win on windows 7. I did restore as new before trying to jailbreak.
        Any idea?

  • poo2g

All that waiting and a big fat fail nice one…. :(

  • Maru

    Solution confirmed!
If ended up with this error message: “Recovery complete, if you want to retry jailbreaking unplug your device and plug it back again.”
Please simply down load the proper firmware of your device. Use iTunes to RESTORE the firmware. Activate the device. Run Absinthe again.
It worked perfectly on my iPad 3 WiFi :)

    • jdw

This worked for me as well on my iPad 3 GSM.

      • Maru

        Great!
So seems a clean restore directly from iTunes is essential.

    • BMW

      Hello where can I find firmware for ipad2 64 AT&T model # MC775LL

      • Maru
      • Maru

Yours is an “iPad 2 (GSM)” version. Just search “ipad firmware” in Google. Click the link to the felixbruns website. You can download the suitable firmware there :)

        • BMW

Thanks Maru.. Its actually a AT&T not Verizon…Ill try it now and update post in the next 15 mins

          • BMW

I worked for me download new firmware and then ran absinthe.

  • Doug

Those of you getting “Hmmmmmm something must have gone wrong error,” try restoring in itunes and then jailbreaking. If you updated through delta update, jailbreak won’t work. I was having the same problem. I restored in iTunes, and jailbreak worked fine.

  • robenghuse

Dear admin, you might want to add that you need a clean 5.1.1 restore you apply the jailbreak on and not an Over-The-Air updated device. That solves problems for quite some people.

  • MT

Step 3 says: “After launching Absinthe, you will be prompted to connect your iPad”.

I am not being prompted to do so. I have re-launched Absinthe three times now and nothing. Any suggestions please?

    • Dragon009

      same goes for me

    • Barronvongeek

Ya same here. I click on Absinthe and it looks like its installing on my windows 7 machine but then I receive no prompt to plug in the iPad and nothing pops up at all.

      • Barronvongeek

Nevermind, Lol, I guess I should have read the read me file first.

  • Olli1980

I tried resetting my Ipad 3 4G+Wifi OTA on the device, did not help…trying a factory reset through itunes now and will see if it works then.

  • Harvey

THIS SOLUTION WORKS! after backup you must ERASE ALL SETTINGS,THEN RESTORE YOUR TO YOUR BACK-UP BEFORE JAILBREAKING!!! This resolves the issue!!!

  • jpips

I got the error several times before updating via itunes, then it worked perfect.

  • Failed – Now Passed

After clean installation…………. IT WORKED. It didn’t work with OTA. Download the IPSW file from Apple in restore your iPAD via iTunes. and you all set.

  • Hengky

Just wanna confirm the solution given by others… If you encounter the message “hmmm something have gone wrong…. recovery complete…”, RESTORE ur iPad from iTunes. It’s simple, just plug ur iPad to ur Mac or PC, and click RESTORE… Choose set up as new (you can restore ur data from back up)… once the restore process is done, use absinthe to jailbreak again… everything should work now

    • memo

CONFIRM, worked after a RESTORE from itunes directly. JBN :))))

  • Jauro

Yes! IT WORKED on my 4S with 5.1.1!! Only after a complete recovery from itunes!
    NICE!!

  • Steve C

It works fine! I’m using a GSM iPhone 4S and all I did was an iTunes backup, then a restore, and then a restore from backup & then run Absinthe & it worked! Easy peasy, thanks Pod2G

  • Jynzgreen

Yes! IT WORKED on my iPad 3 with 5.1.1!! Only after a complete recovery from itunes!
    NICE!!

  • Olli1980

Can anybody tell me which firmware I need for an Ipad 4G+Wifi? I wanted to use 3,2_5.1.1_9B206_Restore.ipsw but when I chose that in itunes, it told me the firmware is wrong :(

    Can anyone help me ??
I have an iphone 4 too,, the same messege comes even if i connect iphone 4 .

    • http://www.iphonehacks.com/ iPhoneHacks

Absinthe only supports iOS 5.1.1, so you need to first update to iOS 5.1.1.

      • Charan

Alright, so i am updating my phone to ios 5.1.1 now, are u sure my the absinthe jailbreak will work on iphone 4S after it?
        Thankyou for replying.

        • Charan

Thankyou , it worked like charm..
          Woooooo thanx to the hackers!

  • doc_holiday

Yes, good work and the above mentioned solution works really fine.
It’s a must to make a fresh “update” with the CORRECT firmware (!) and than direct the jb with absinthe (in WIN 7 running as ADMINISTRATOR !). Thanks guys.
    I really do enjoy :-)

    • doc_holiday

forgot to mention: iPad 3.3 (WLan + GSM Vodafone)

Okay. Which ones has less issue. Seq. A or Seq. B?
    Seq. A:
    1. Backup in iTunes
    2. Restore stock firmware 5.1.1
    3. Restore backup from iTunes
    4. JB

    Seq. B:
    1. Backup in iTunes
    2. Restore stock firmware 5.1.1
    3. JB
    4. Restore backup from iTunes

  • Elisinne

On my Ipad 3. I am not getting the Jailbreak message it just runs the DOS script and that’s it. When I the absinthe application it says I must run as administrator which I am. I never get the prompt to jailbreak

  • Dome

Update 26.05.2012: Some are having issues with the Windows version, so here is a potential fix.

Error – “Recovery completed. If you want to retry jailbreaking, unplug your device and plug it back in” Fix:

    1. Backup your device

    2. Restore your device and DO NOT unlock your device after the restore

    3. Set it up as a new iPhone/iPad/iPod

    3. Let it finish syncing/setting up

    4. Open Absinthe and jailbreak

    5. Now you can also restore from backup

Thanks to all the hard workers on the jailbreak team/s. You guys are actually amazing!!

    Turned off password
Backed up my ipad 2 5.0.1
    Updated to 5.1.1
    Used Absinthe 2.0
All went well. Cydia was on page 2 of ipad screen.
    Restored from backup.
Ran Cydia (took a minute or two for “preparing filesystem” to update.
    Restored from backup.
    Everything’s working.

I get an error “could not connect to lockdownd” different from what you guys are reporting so far…i didnt try a complete RESTORE…before i try that, any suggestions?

    • http://www.iphonehacks.com/ iPhoneHacks

Try the solution mentioned in Update 1 and if that doesn’t work try the solution in Update 2.

    • http://www.iphonehacks.com/ iPhoneHacks

But before that, try using Absinthe 2.0.1 as Chronic Dev team have fixed some bugs in it.

      • Susan

I could not get either solution to work for me until I used 2.0.1 and restoring from a backup.

  • sam

    someone help please

  • Invictafied

I’m going nuts here. Keep getting that 3194 error when trying to restore. When hitting jailbreak it does the hmmm thing. I tried everything possible. I thought this was so easy grandma can do it.

    • http://www.iphonehacks.com/ iPhoneHacks

That’s because you have host file entries pointing to Cydia rather than to Apple servers. You can either comment out all *.apple.com entries from the host file or launch TinyUmbrella, click on the Advanced tab and deselect “Set Hosts to Cydia on Exit” option and close TinyUmbrella. Then try to restore and it should work fine.

Remember to Donate to the DREAM TEAM everyone to support the JB community!!!!!!!

  • HarheyMan

This is how you can tell if your ipad2 wifi is R2 or not. If you go to settings, general and about. Then under Model # if the first two letters says MB then it is not R2. If it says MC then it is R2. hope this answer your questions. I have ipad2 wifi R2. so, it’s not supported for jailbreak yet…..

  • HarheyMan

Did someone manage to jailbreak ipad2 wifi R2 yet?

  • nuttapong

I would constantly get “absinthe.exe has stopped working” while on “Sending initial jailbreak data. This may also take a while…” after my “Beginning jailbreak, this may take a while …” had taken quite a while.

The key for getting the jailbreak to work for me appeared to be erasing all settings and data (make sure you have a backup, and I think you may have to go further than just a standard backup to make sure you keep your pictures and movies taken from the device) from the device and immediately jailbreaking it after. When I say immediately, you have to go through a step or two on the device, before absinthe will let you jailbreak. I think you have to specify the language, whether you will let it use your location, and your wireless network. Once you do that, the jailbreak should go through really fast, like many posters say, less than five minutes, and then you do your restore through itunes, and I was good to go. Hope this helps someone.

Other stuff I also did (that, who knows, could play into it) as I was trying anything to get this to work:
    Turned off virus protection.
Ran absinthe.exe as admin and in windows xp sp 3 compatibility mode.

  • iPhone 4S

Absinthe 2.0.1(Win XP) will run for 5 to 10 minutes up to “Sending initial jailbreak data..” and then I constantly get this error whenever I retry, “Absinthe iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak has encountered a problem and needs to close. Sorry for the inconvenience.” This has never happened with my past jailbreaks and I don’t know how to fix it.. I tried “Run as Administrator” as well..

ATTENTION!!!!!!! I had the same problem with Ipad2 (purchased less than a month ago) with absinthe 2.0.1 stuck at waiting to complete (or somthing to that effect) i went back to itunes and restored but once it was done I DID NOT restore from backup. I then ran absinthe with the ipad at the “out of the box” IPAD screen and it worked in about 2 mins!!

Ipad 3 32 4g+wifi=+absinte 2.01 : folow instructions. perfect at the first try. Five minutes jailbroken. Thanks guys.

  • David C.

Anyone have it working on the iPad 1 yet?

  • carol

Wow, this is great. One observation for those who want to restore their iPad from iCloud. (1) Reinstall firmware 5.1.1 as noted in other posts, (2) then restore from iCloud backup during the activation process, and (3) then, and only then, jailbreak the iPad. Took me three tries in different configurations to successfully get Cydia running on iPad 3,3 GSM. But the above steps did it. Thanks for making this available….

Quick stuff for Mac Lion users, I had problems but then got it sorted out when I downloaded V2.0.1 of Absinthe, so if you have downloaded the very first version in all chances it might not work, so please get the latest version for mac and then use it.

All the best, let me know if it worked.

    Hi,

I’m not 100% sure how to proceed, so please help. I have iPad2 GSM 5.0.1 Jailbroken with tons of apps installed. I would like to upgrade it to 5.1.1 with JailBreak, but I’m afraid to lose all Cydia and other apps and accompanied data. How should I procee? I was thinkin that I will loose all data if I just upgrade iPad to 5.1.1. via iTunes and than apply Absinth.

    Please Help.

    Thank you,

You need to connect your iOS device to the computer as Absinthe is available for Mac, Windows and Linux.

It stays in “Waiting for process to complete…” for about 5 mins and then the message “humm… something went wrong…” and “recovery completed, if you want to retry….”. What’s more to do? any ideas?

    hello,
    thanks for the instructions.
i want to jailbreak my ipad 1.
i dont have a computer so i will have to use my mom’s windows 7 pc. she just got an ipad 3.
she always spazzes at me for downloading stuff on her computer, claiming I mess it up.

will it be safe for me to download absinthe 2.0.4 to her computer and plug in my ipad to do the jailbreak? or will that possibly mess up sync/driver stuff when she tries to plug in her iPad?
