How to Jailbreak iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS Running iOS 5.1.1 Using Absinthe 2.0.4 [Updated]

greenpois0n absinthe

pod2g and Chronic Dev team has just released Absinthe 2.0 – iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak.

In this guide, we will take you through the step by step procedure to jailbreak your iPhone running iOS 5.1.1 using Absinthe for both Mac and Windows users.

Here are some important points to note before you proceed.

  • This guide is meant for iPhone users. iPod touch can check out this step-by-step guide, while iPad users can check out this guide.
  • Absinthe 2.0 performs an untethered jailbreak
  • Absinthe 2.0 supports iPhone 4S, iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS
  • Please do not forget to backup your iPhone to iCloud or iTunes before you proceed.
  • Please ensure you’ve updated iTunes to the latest version.
  • Absinthe 2.0 is compatible with only iOS 5.1.1, so if you’re on iOS 5.1 or lower (Settings -> General -> About – Version), then you should update your iPhone to iOS 5.1.1 either using iTunes or using the OTA software update before proceeding further.
  • Warning: If you depend on Ultrasn0w to unlock your iPhone, then do not update to iOS 5.1.1. You should wait for iPhone Dev team to release Redsn0w that adds support for iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak, which will allow you to create a custom iOS firmware file, which will allow you to update to iOS 5.1.1 while preserving the baseband
  • Please note that jailbreaking your iPhone may void your warranty and hence proceed with caution and at your own risk
  • Please do not jailbreak your iPhone to pirate apps from the App Store

Step 1: Download the latest version of Absinthe from this link and save it in a folder named “Absinthe” on your desktop.

Step 2: Double click the Absinthe zip file and extract the application to the Absinthe folder (Windows users). Navigate back to the Absinthe folder and launch the Absinthe application.

Windows users: Please launch the application as an Administrator. Right Click on the Absinthe exe and select the “Run as Administrator” option.

Mac users: If you’ve upgraded to Mountain Lion, then check out this post to find out how to run Absinthe on OS X Mountain Lion.

Step 3: After launching Absinthe, you will be prompted to connect your iPhone.

Step 4: Please disable the passcode as the jailbreak may fail, if the passcode is enabled (Settings -> General -> Passcode Lock On -> Turn Passcode Off).

Step 5: After the passcode is disabled, connect your iPhone to the computer. Absinthe should detect your iPhone and also mention the iOS firmware that is running on it. Click on the Jailbreak button.

After clicking on the Jailbreak button the tool will give a progress update on the various stages of the jailbreak process such as:

“Beginning jailbreak, this may take a while …”

“Sending initial jailbreak data. This may also take a while…”

“Sending initial jailbreak data.Your device will appear to be restoring a backup, this may take a while…”

“Waiting for reboot … not done yet, don’t unplug your device yet!”

“Waiting for process to complete… “

Step 6: In the end you’ll be prompted with the message informing you that it is “Done, Enjoy!” You can now close the Absinthe 2.0 application. The process may take 5 to 10 minutes.

That’s it, your iPhone should be successfully jailbroken and you should see the Cydia icon on the Home screen (it may not be on the first page so search for it to locate it).

Update 1:

Please refresh the page. We had the wrong download link for Windows, it has now been updated. Extremely sorry about that.

Update 2:

If you’re having problems jailbreaking your iPhone then following these steps, which will involve erasing all content and Settings.

  • Make a backup of your iPhone in iTunes by right clicking on your iPhone’s name under the ‘Devices’ menu and click ‘Back Up’.
  • Once your backup is complete return to your device and go to Settings –> General –> Reset –> Erase all Content and Settings.
  • Follow the instructions mentioned above from step 1 to step 6.
  • Once jailbroken return to iTunes and restore your backup from earlier. Right click on your device name under the ‘Devices’ menu in the left panel of iTunes and click ‘Restore from Back Up…’ then select the latest backup you created before to restore your Settings, apps, photos etc.
Update 3:
  • If the solution in Update 2 doesn’t work then take a backup of your iPhone in iTunes and try to do a full restore and then use Absinthe.
  • Once jailbroken return to iTunes and restore your backup from earlier. Right click on your device name under the ‘Devices’ menu in the left panel of iTunes and click ‘Restore from Back Up…’ then select the latest backup you created before to restore your Settings, apps, photos etc.
Update 4:
Chronic Dev Team has released Absinthe 2.0.1, which includes fix for some minor bugs. So we’ve also updated the download links.
Update 5:
GSM iPhone 4 users if you’re having trouble jailbreaking after restoring your iOS device then check out this post for more details.
Update 6:
Chronic Dev team has released Absinthe 2.0.2, which includes support for revised iOS 5.1.1 (9B208) that was released for GSM iPhone 4 users. So we’ve also updated the download links.
Update 7:
Chronic Dev team has released Absinthe 2.0.4, which includes support for iPad2,4 model. So we’ve also updated the download links.

YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!! It is time to make some noise people! Jailbreaking time. 🙂

    • Franklyn Edwards

i have an iphone 4 ios 5.1.1 baseband 4.12.01. anytime i attempt a jailbreak i recieve a message stating device is not supported.. please, could you tell me what the problem could be?

      • Vee

I am getting the same message, i even can not jailbreak it from ultrasnow or redsnow, and also i restore my phone, still it is same thing.

      • Serenity

I’m not sure why you guys are having a problem… but I have the same build and it worked in 7 minutes for me and with no problems! I will tell you this though… I DID do the backup and I erased my phone before doing the JB and then I restored from the backup. I would say… do this and try it again…

  • Alex

    theres no mac link??

    • ron

go to the “absinthe released” thread.. i also downloaded the mac version.. and that link works.. you get, of course, a dmg file..

  • HoStuff2

So, if we’re still on iOS 5.0.1 (jailbroken), do we need to do a fresh install of iOS 5.1.1 then do the jailbreak, or can we just use iTunes to update to iOS 5.1.1 and then do the jailbreak with Absinthe 2.0?

    • RobH

Yes, you need to do an install of iOS 5.1.1 over your old jailbroken iOS 5.0.1, (backup beforehand), then jailbreak the new installed iOS 5.1.1

      • Yo Mama

Well, I did the untethered jailbreak on 5.1.1 before installing the racoon thing via cydia for the untether… and upgrading to 5.1.1 didn’t work for cydia/jailbreak apps. I had to RESTORE to 5.1.1 for it to work properly (tethered jailbreak, that is). So if you have problems launching cysia, try to first reset your settings (wiping your device) and/or RESTORE to 5.1.1, which will halso reset all of your settings.

      • Lino Odeh

Is this work on sprint iphone 4s,, please reply

  • jm sabariaga

yup. where is the mac link? not working 🙁 I tried it 3 times and still no progress

    • RobH

      • john

hey robH i own an iphone 4s with an updated version of ios 5.1.1. I’m stuck with this problem “waiting for process to complete and retry again” 🙁

        • chris

Having the same problem as john, sticks at “waiting for process to complete.” then returns with “Recovery completed. If you want to retry jailbreaking, unplug your device and plug it back in.”

          • Kwame Owusu

            Same here

          • nonofur

i have the same issue please we want a quick update from chronic dev team solving this problem

          • erick

had same problem i removed my sim card and tried it again and it worked

  • baba

    thank you BOSS

    • abhi 911

      ur welcome;-)

  • Jim R

It’s not working. iPhone 4S, Mac OS X. Everything updated. My iOS version is 5.1.1 9B206. I commented on an earlier post. I erased all content and settings after backing up, as was suggested by pod2g’s blog. It doesn’t tell you that you have to Activate the phone, but I did. Then I just the Jailbreak.

The progress bar just hangs there for a few minutes about 3/4 of the way through. It says Not Done Yet. Then I get “Something seems to have gone wrong…trying to recover.” Then “Recovery complete. If you want to retry, unplug and plug your iPhone back in again.”

Are there other steps I’m missing?

    • DavidS

I’m getting the same thing. Hmm…

      • Peter

        Me too.

        • Danny

          Me as well….im on windows

        • Shay

          Me three

      • cj

        me tooo

      • Robert

        me, too 🙁

        • omega

          me too -.-“

      • Surrideo

I’m having the same bloody issue. I’m gonna try reseting my device again without activating the phone.

        • vikram

Do a fresh clean restore with 5.1.1 ipsw and try absinthe . it works for me thatway

    • dzaskola

      Me to 4S :(( “Recovery complete……. ;/

      • fadi

        the same here i phone 4s 16gb – updated to version 5.1.1

    • arrow

Did you guys try “Run as Administrator”? I’m having the same issue. Run as Administrator hopefully it works!

      • Des

Run as administrator doesn’t help! I tried jailbreaking 6 times in a row & the same message keeps coming up! 🙁

    • zdiewold

Same thing happened to me. I did a backup. Then complete restore in iTunes. Then run Absinthe again. Worked Perfectly.

    • Niko P

I’m having also hardtime getting windows to JB my 4S. Updated 5.0.1 to 5.1.1 with iTunes, wiped iphone, activated, JB sent recovery data but after reboot JB stuck on 3/4 and eventually Absinthe deleted JB data and asked to try again. I tried a couple of wipes, but no luck.

I recovered iphone from backup back to fully installed 5.1.1 and tried JB again. Now my 4S got stuck to 1/4 when Absinthe tried to send initial JB-data, and eventually gave error “Can not lockdwn” or simply just crashed.

So, I start wait Absinthe 2.1 for my 4S. 🙁

      • nonofur

same here .. please im dying i need the jailbreak 🙁

        • gio443

Hey guys, i am having the same problem. The jailbreak is not finishing the right way. What kind of iPhone are you using? me the 3GS

      • SLABBERS

my 4s worked perfectly, just updated 5.0.1 to 5.1.1 restored from backup then jb using absinthe 2.0 had no probs at all aside from very slow updates (as expected) in cydia.

    • Angel

Da f*ck did I just read!

  • Jonathan Sarasin

Yep not working for me either on my mac book pro. Everything looks good then says “Recovery complete. If you want to retry, unplug and plug your iPhone back in again.”

    Damn it! Help!

  • Danny

anyone tried contact any other the jailbreak crew?

    • Jim R

I tried, but I’m not anyone involved in the jailbreak community other than utilizing it. I tweet pod2g and MuscleNerd. I’m sure they’re getting flooded for various reasons, including this issue. It’s just not working.

      • Danny

yes i was gonna tweet but i know they’ll be flooded already….hope they can fix asap

        • Stephen

Same problem, followed kind advice on here, full restore through itunes on pc, not on phone, then do the jail break. worked then after 2 hours of head scratching. Thanks for solution.

  • Jim R

Is there a separate version of Absinthe for iPad vs. iPhone? The only reason I ask is, in the instructions reported for both, the language during the process matches exactly what is shown for the iPad not the iPhone.

Here is what is noted above we should see for the iPhone:
    “Beginning jailbreak”
“Sending initial data” at this time you will notice that “Restoring in Progress” message on your iPhone
    “Waiting for reboot”
“Waiting for device to finish rebooting” as your iPhone is rebooting.
    “Preparing jailbreak data”
    “Sending payload data”

    This is what I get:
“Beginning jailbreak, this may take a while …”
“Sending initial jailbreak data. This may also take a while…”
“Sending initial jailbreak data.Your device will appear to be restoring a backup, this may take a while…”
“Waiting for reboot … not done yet, don’t unplug your device yet!”
“Waiting for process to complete… ”

That’s what is noted for the iPad jailbreak.

    • ron

there’s only one version for ipad and iphone.. has just jailbroken first gen ipad, ipad 2, iphone 4 and iphone 4s.. all went without a hitch… and it showed the same message on the absinthe interface..

    • bames

getting the exact same issue…going to restore my phone and try again

    • Tre

me 2. Iphone 4s. Using a macbook pro. Help 2 days now & i’m getting the same message “Waiting for reboot- not done yet, don’t unplug your device yet”! Then I have to start from the beginning because I get error -5. If I don’t do the complete restore form beginning it doesn’t go any further. Help me please.

  • Dr. Kahn

Tried this several times… as far as I can tell, I followed procedures to the T, and even reset my phone to factory settings before attempting the jailbreak, since apparently that reduces the risk of complication.

But no matter what I do, it won’t get past the reboot phase. It reboots, then says “waiting for process to complete,” hangs there a while, and then says “hmmm, something went wrong,” and tells me to try again.

I have an iPhone 4 running 5.1.1, factory settings but previously thethered JB’ed using Redsn0w.

    • Dr. Kahn

Should mention I’m on a MacBook pro the most recent OSX.

    • Dr. Kahn

Did a tethered JB and downloaded Rocky Raccoon from Cydia. That worked.

  • Greg

Can we update overtop of the 5.01 jailbreak to 5.1 then rejailbreak or should the phone be restored first

    • ron

i just updated over the jailbreak, and used absinthe.. worked with no glitch.. hope it works for you too..

  • Shinji Arasawa

So it seems like I’m not the only one experiencing trouble with using Absinthe 2.0 to Jailbreak my iDevice huh. Like the others eperienced, I too can’t jailbreak. It shows something like “Something went wrong…. bla bla” after the reboot. Any help there? 🙁

  • J

    iPhone4. windows7. device not supported.

    • ron

that is weird.. i am on win7 as well, and just used absinthe on a first gen ipad, ipad 2, iphone 4 and iphone 4s.. no glitch.. did you run absinte as admin? just curious..

      • Please refresh the page. We had the wrong download link, it has now been updated. Extremely sorry about that.

    • shottisimo

iPhone 4 here I tried both absinthe 2.0 and 2.01 and still won’t jb my iphone. It doesn’t even get through the jb and it says there is an error…??

  • Jonathan Sarasin

Just glad to see I’am not alone. They will get it fixed. Surprised that this is happening.

    • Jim R

Agreed, but I hope they do it before I start my travels for the weekend. I was looking forward to not taking my laptop. I was even going to jailbreak my iPad for the first time ever.

    • Dr. Kahn

Reminds me of that saying, “the first casualty of war is the battle plan.”

They’re smart guys, they’ll get it done. But for a few hours/days we’ll have to hear about how stupid they are from people who have no idea what they’re talking about.

  • Jonathan Sarasin

Well, I restored my phone through iTunes, then tried again and it worked now!

    • Danny

restore as in restore firmware? not just erase settings and data?

    • Jim R

Interesting. Trying that now. Could be a key. I just bought my iPhone 4S Wednesday and had to update to 5.1.1. I did so over the air. Now I’m doing a complete restore. Yuck…but it’s worth a shot.

    • Jim R

BINGO! This worked for me. I did have an issue though, which I think was caused by Tiny Umbrella. I went to “Restore” my phone via iTunes, but it told me I wasn’t eligible for that build.

Google that if it comes up. Do NOT go into DFU mode. That bricked it for me. Upon Googling it, there are some entries (browser crashed or i’d link it for you) that deal with having to Comment out an entry via your Terminal (Mac OS X). From there, I was able to restore. Then I jailbroke it. It worked.

If you haven’t loaded Tiny Umbrella, I’m guessing you won’t have the issue I had.

      • Help

In TinyUmbrella go to advanced tab, untick set hosts to cydia on exit.

  • oldirty

keep getting a “hmmm something seems to have gone wrong message” whilst jailbreraking (between steps 5-6) iphone 4s running 5.1.1??#
    HELP!! please!

  • Warez

First time i backup and update via iTunes and erase everything in iPhone (followed readme.txt), after all no lucky with jailbreak, no cydia appears on iPhone.

2nd time. After that i try to RESTORE in iTunes and then activating and jailbreak with Absinthe! Everything went FINE and now i have jailbroken and with CYDIA! 🙂

My suggest: try to RESTORE clear iPhone, boot up and activate, then try to jailbreak and u will see “Done, enjoy!” 😉
    Good luck.

    • Danny

thanks for the tips, gonna try that now…..*fingers crossed*

    • Shinji Arasawa

anyone tried this yet? does it work for others?

      • Warez

Shinji confirmed as i understand in following posts, it works 🙂 U can manually download ipsw and update in DFU or as i told, just RESTORE simple with iTunes first, than jailbreak. 😉

  • Peter

Guys I finally made mine work!
Download the ipsw file for 5.1.1 on which ever device your on and manually restore it and then try again!

YAYY thank you dev team for this jb!!

  • birdman

The link to download Absinthe (windows) is wrong? It stated 2.0 but is actually 0.4 ? Maybe this caused the problem?

  • ed6hatch

i keep trying to jailbreak over and over and it just aint happenin im on 5.1.1 and followed the steps and nothin any help?

    • Shinji Arasawa

Restore your iDevice again to 5.1.1 on itunes or DFU mode. For me, I tried restoring in DFU mode. Then try jailbreaking again using Absinthe. Then Ta-da! Cydia should now pop up. Make sure to run it as admin though. Cheers mate! 😀

      • Warez

        I told u 🙂

  • dark23

anyone have any suggetsions? they would be greatly apprecioated cos I reckon this is the biggest anti climax EVER!!!!

  • Shinji Arasawa

For those experiencing the hmmm, something went wrong,” message, just restore your device again in iTunes or DFU mode. then try to jailbreak again using Absinthe. It worked for me. Hope this helps! 😀

    • oldirty

absinthe wont recognise the device if its in DFU? or have i misunderstood??#

      • Shinji Arasawa

restore first in DFU then use absinthe after the restore process.

        • oldirty

ive restored iphone & ran absinthe as suggested…

          no joy.

can i ask, was your file directly from greenpoison site & are u running windows?

  • Alex

I just performed a jailbreak on my iPhone 4S

The process seemed completed, said ”recovery complete” in the details of what’s going on with the install…

But all I had was the progress bar full, but no button or indication that it was successful.
Turning to the phone, no trace of cydia anywhere.

    Help please.

the windows link is wrong look on

    • Please refresh the page. We had the wrong download link initially, it has now been updated.

  • Don

I had the same issue. “Recovery Complete, etc” so I forced rebooted the phone and tried again. This time it hung after initialing the initial files and said waiting for the phone to reboot.

After waiting for a couple minutes and seeing that the phone looked like nothing was happening (on lock screen), I disconnected the phone, kill Absinthe (I’m on a Mac) and reopened Absinthe.

When I reconnected the phone, Absinthe said that I was already jailbroken. Sure enough, there was Cydia.

  • SuperSalva

    Windows link is wrong!

    • We had the wrong download link for a short time, it has now been updated. Please refresh the page. Extremely sorry about that.

It works, after restoring from Itunes your device. I tried to restore it from the iphone first but abinthe found issue. It’s now working and cydia is here !

  • I Just Updated My IPhone 4s from ios 5.0.1 to 5.1.1 and i had previously unlock my 4s with the sam software im still on ios 5.1.1 with t-mobile and i haven’t even jailbreaking my device yet was sup with that??? anybody Im still making call with stock ios 5.1.1 on T-mobile network this is crazy

  • Chris

The first time it crashed and since then I keep getting:

ERROR: could not connect to lockdownd after step 2.

    • Chris

Or Rather after: “”Sending initial jailbreak data. This may also take a while…” “

      • Reboot your iPhone and try to do it again.

If it doesn’t work then probably the other option would it restore your iPhone, but don’t forget to take a backup first.

        • Jessey

I did what you said 3 times, didn’t work, on my iPhone 4 (GSM) 5.1.1
Though I lost my music list & my photos.

          • If you had backed up your iPhone as we had advised then you should restore again and this time restore from the latest backup so you can get your photos and music back.

        • tc

the restore option does work i was having same problems restore and jailbreak will work

          • Jessey

it worked after 6 times of retry.
But the most essential, is I lost nearly everything after restore, photos music…

        • Chris

With 2.0.1 problem just became that it crashed every time…
I did the erase all contents and settings and retried – seems to have worked this time!

  • Alberto

Is there a way to update to ios5.1.1 without losing all of my current jailbreak tweaks and sources?

    • No you will lose the jailbreak if you update. You can use aptbackup to take a backup of your jailbreaks and then you can restore the tweaks after you’ve upgraded to iOS 5.1.1.

    • ios6

No sir, you will have to do all over again. you can also backup your tweaks from cydia with the backup app.

    • statman

In the same vein…I have managed to JB after second try….now how do I restore all of my JB apps/settings? I did use Appbackup.

      • Mike R

YES…… there’ s a Cydia program – you have to buy it. It’s avail. right off the Cydia homescreen on your phone. It backs up all your JB apps to a Dropbox account (need to set one up – free – if you don’t already have one). It’s called PkgBackup. It’s not “available” on Cydia right this minute for me to reinstall – I presume it’s being altered for 5.1.1 or maybe Cydia servers are just jammed up.

  • _u_e_

I was also having problems, tried it about 10 times and then did a restore using itunes – worked first thing after that

  • Ryan

Make sure you have a sim card that can be used to activate the phone. You won’t be able to activate your phone if you’re using an unlock method like gevey sim or ultrasn0w.

I did everything I was suppose to do but when I connect my phone it says “sorry but the attached device is not supported. i have an iphone 4 ios 5.1.1 Please anybody have any suggestions?

    • SLICK

I deleted all the files I downloaded and opened that was used in absinthe 2.0 and then re-downloaded from a different source and all is good!

      • Noel

Can you clarify a little bit more about what you did and how you did it? I guess what I’m getting from you is that you downloaded absinthe 2.0 and not 2.0.1. Because I’m getting the same error as you did (sorry, but the attached device is not supported), on my iphone 4 ios 5.1.1 as well. Also, every absinthe 2.0 download links I run into are all broken. Please help!

  • jerry

hey guys, i jail broke my iPhone 4s from a clean restore, then i restored from back up and when all of that finished my camera roll was empty..any fix for that?

  • Daniel

Jailbreak is not working for me either. IOS 5.1.1 iPhone 4s. Running OSX Lion. I did backup my SHSH blobs with tiny umbrella if that has any relevance, not sure.

    • Follow the steps mentioned in update 2, it should work.

    • Farukh

Erased my phone before doing the JB and then I restored from the backup. Didn’t work without that for me. iPhone 4S CDMA Verizon

  • axe

Apparently cydia has not cached my shsh blob 5.1.1. Weird? I thought already sent it…

  • Bill

Please help, I am getting this error: “attached device is not activated absinthe”, this is a canadian iPhone, that I am trying to jailbreak and unlock. how do I activate it, then jailbreak it, then unlock it? Please help

This is what works i tried to jailbreak after backing up and restore erase etc from iphone settings no success get the message recovering etc etc….YOU need to restore using itunes and then jailbreak and it worked for me!!!!

  • mark

Worked fine here 1st time, just got to reinstall my themes etc…

    • mark

Also forgot to thank pod2g and Chronic Dev team great work!!!!

  • Nick

      • Nick

  • trying to JB

I currently have an iphone 4, running 4.0.1 baseband 01.59.00 jailbroken and unlocked using tmobile. I want to upgrade to the 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak and unlock. How do I go about unlocking it after using absinthe 2.0 to jailbreak?

    • axe

absinthe 2.0 will not preserve old baseband. don’t even try. wait for redsnow if you care for your baseband.

      • trying to JB

so how long will it take for redsnow to come out with an unlock? also, what will preserving my baseband do for me?

        • Samuel

I’m not sure when it will but eventually it will. If your iphone is factory unlock, then u don’t need to worry and can use absinthe 2.0. If it’s locked to certain carrier n u wanna unlock it to use other carrier other tham tmobile, the yr bb should stay as low as possible.

          • trying to JB

It was locked to at&t, I had to unlock it to be able to use tmobile. I guess i should wait for redsnow.

      • Dam

I have an unlocked iphone 4, 04.12.01, ios 5.1.1. I had a friend with AT&T service call them to unlock it for me. I would like to jailbreak it using absinthe 2.0.2. I was wondering if doing this would lock my phone?

  • Rashid Mehmood

I am resident of third world country and i thank you for the greatest work. How should i make a donation.

  • RobertH

I did it on the first attempt and it worked! This has got to be the best thing to wake up to, seeing “Absinthe 2.0 Released!”

  • Shay

All of you getting “Something seems to have gone wrong…trying to recover.”
just restore from itunes, activate without itunes (via the iphone itself) and jailbreak.

afterwards you can restore from your backup.

  • mark

Cydia servers must be taking a beating i keep getting internal 500 server probs, in red every now and again but when i do it the 2nd time it works

  • mark

Edit it’s HTTP/1.1 500 internal server error in red

    • axe

yup 😉 hammering thru cydia is painful now.

  • DayMare

Peeps… backup your phone via iTunes.. dump your blobs, restore the phone using iTunes so it’s a totally clean device and running 5.1.1… use Absinthe 2.0.. it will JB it properly for you.

Just done two 3GS and now starting on my iPad 2.

    • DayMare

AND make sure you ‘Run as Administrator’ as well..

  • Jw

I finally got it to work by going to Absinthe website. but my cydia isn’t working. i can see everything but can’t install anything.

  • Hank

After 10+ attempts & restoring my iphone (erasing all data), still no sign of cydia.

    Windows 7
    iphone 4

I even tried putting absinthe in Windows XP compatibility mode…

    • mark

You have to right click the mouse button on absinthe 2.0 and run as an administrator, it does work

  • stupid

Guess what, you need to do a restore to 5.1.1 then run absinthe.
    First Try:
    – 4S was on 5.0.1
    – Upgraded to 5.1.1 OTA
    – Ran Absinthe
    – No go

    Second Try:
    – Backed up 4S with iTunes
    – Manually restored with iTunes (you need to DL the 5.1.1 ipsw)
    – Restored to 5.1.1
    – Ran Absinthe
    – Jailbroken!
    – Restore everything with iTunes

*** DOES NOT WORK ON 5.1.1 UPGRADED OTA (Over-The-Air) ***

    • mark

My wifes phone UPGRADED, i used wireless network not 3g as you can imagine some servers are taking a battery today and in this heat but went to latest firmware pretty quickly!!!!

  • DoctorTim

Those that did the JB, does iBooks work?

  • Gordii

Jail Broken my Ipad 2 Ipod 4th Gen and my Iphone 4S Thanks guys for all that you do!

  • r77w8c39

i am using iphone 4 and windows
please help in lots of problem:(((((

    • Search for Cydia, it won’t be on the first Home screen page.

    • mark

      scroll across your iphone pages

  • William

Mine says “Recovery completed. If you want to retry the jailbreaking, unplug your devise and plug it back in” is this normal :S

  • ed6hatch

if you guys had the wrong link for windows why did it work when i reset my phone from itunes?

  • I

I think this jailbreak works far better on a Mac than Windows. I had 5.1 tethered, backed up on iTunes on Windows 7 and openbackup. But absinthe wasn’t compatible with my Win7 so I moved to my MacBook Air. 5.1.1 untethered JB, done. Use a Mac if you can IMO. Good luck y’all.

  • mark

Works perfect look at the 2 images below, so you can see with your own eyes and realise YOU MUST BE DOING SOMETHING WRONG!!!!!!

  • ex

Works like a charm didnt even have to run as Admin.. Thanx pod2g….

  • Mr Jinxx

iPhone 4S previously JB’d on iOS 5.0.1 – was working fine
Backed up and then updated s/ware through iTunes to latest 5.1.1
Downloaded Absinthe 2.0, followed instructions (Absinthe says you need to activate the phone again before it will un-grey the jailbreak button, so I did) but got the dreaded hmmm.. there seems to be something wrong .. message
Did this many times with many configurations and was pulling my hair out but finally cracked it.
Do your backup, then put the iPhone 4S into DFU mode (look up how to do this if you don’t know – it’s really simple) then (if you haven’t already done so) plug into iTunes, where it tells you it has spotted an iPhone in recovery mode. Say yes to recovering it and upgrading the firmware (to 5.1.1) and let it do its stuff.
When it’s finished restoring and rebooted your iPhone, DON’T ACTIVATE the iPhone. Wait a few moments and then shut down iTunes. The iPhone will still be on the grey “ready to be activated” first page but don’t touch the phone. Just open Absinthe 2.0 and the jailbreak button should be black and ready to go. This time it works
In Summary … don’t despair, all those who have had the “hmmm … something’s gone wrong” message … it WILL work, you just have to do it in the right order. I was despairing an hour ago!
    Good luck

  • Manu

Okay. Which ones has less issue. Seq. A or Seq. B?
    Seq. A:
    1. Backup in iTunes
    2. Restore stock firmware 5.1.1
    3. Restore backup from iTunes
    4. JB

    Seq. B:
    1. Backup in iTunes
    2. Restore stock firmware 5.1.1
    3. JB
    4. Restore backup from iTunes

  • Jason’s

If I jailbreak my iPhone 4s will I lose all my jailbreak apps and if not how do I get them back?? Thanks

    • mark

No the apps stay there as long as you have backed em up with itunes but you will loose winterboard and cydia til you reinstall them
I lost my wallpaper and a few tewwks for my phone but i wrote down what i needed and have put them back on the phone and added 1 or 2 new tweeks lol

  • wolverinemarky

how come with the windows link its downloading absinthe for iOS 5.01 instead of 5.1.1????

  • John

I have a problem , well..when it was downloading , after it said “waiting for process to complete” it took a long time then it recovered itself , it didnt finish the download :S , plzzz help i waited for it soo loooong :/

  • CalMing2341

These are the instructions I found in the readme.txt file. This should make things easier for everyone!!! 🙂

    1. Make a backup of your device iTunes by right clicking on your device name under the ‘Devices’ menu and click ‘Back Up’.
    2. Once your backup is complete return to your device and go to Settings – General – Reset – Erase All Content and Settings. This will make the jailbreak process much faster.
    3. Open Absinthe and be sure your are still connected via USB cable to your computer.
    4. Click ‘Jailbreak’ and wait… just be patient and do not disconnect your device!
    5. Once jailbroken return to iTunes and restore your backup from earlier. To do so, right click on your device name under the ‘Devices’ menu in the left panel of iTunes and click ‘Restore From Backup…’ then select the latest backup you created before. (restoring this backup will return all the content previously on your device, i.e. apps, photos, etc.)
    6. Thanks for using Absinthe, enjoy your jailbroken iDevice!

    • John

sorry but i did what they said millions of times but none changed my problem. it always stop after “waiting for process to complete ” and recover itself . it doesn’t finish downloading. :/

  • Nick

My cydia sources are totally blank after I jailbroke… did I do something wrong?

  • IP4

worked for me but after full factory restore and activation. thanks a lot for all the hard work.

  • Bob

Will Sprint keep charging me an activation fee every time I reset and re-activate my iphone?

  • ex

I did the jailbreak and did an update on cydia but now i have a white icon for Cydia! how do i fix that also some sources are not loading?

  • KinG12sKy

    Ok here is the deal..

If you get ANY ERROR jailbreaking, just restore your phone. IT WILL WORK!!! i tried everything and had to resort to this.

Lastly i tried to download winterboard but it’s not working. it keeps saying the error cannot be detected. Does anyone knows how to get it to work?

  • paul

weird, i tell it to run as administrator and it keeps telling me that i am not

  • miles

Did both my wifes and my phone in under ten minutes works flawlessly thanks guys ill deff be donating !!!! And all i did was download the windows file extracted it opened the absinthe file clicked the app plugged in the iphone for some reason we have iphone 4’s and it registered them as iphone 3’s pushed jailbreak anyways lol and wala bothed jailbroken and running cydia flawlessly

  • chris

Completely restore back to factory defaults in itunes, then run the jailbreak. worked for me.

  • Tim

If you are having trouble with the jb failing….try wiping the phone from within iTunes. Once it is wiped, wait for it to activate without touching it. Then do the jailbreak. Best method for me on a 4S on Telus.

  • whatever

after several hundred attempts on my new iphone4 ( 5.1.1) . and getting the same message “Recovery completed. If you want to retry jailbreaking, unplug your device and plug it back in.”
i got it to work yeeehaaaa.
here is how i got it to work.

i noticed had Tiny Umbrella running in the backgroud ,so i shut it down.
i also downloaded a fresh Absinthe 2.0. program.
followed the instructions and hey presto.

  • Anon

now getting “error detecting device (lockdown error -5). tried on 2 different computers. anyone else?

    • It looks like you have not disabled your passcode. Disable the passcode (Settings -> General -> Passcode, enter the passcode, then tap on Passcode off, enter the passcode, which will disable the passcode) and try again. Absinthe should guide to through the recovery process since you have tried to jailbreak it once.

      • Anon

great guess. i had a passcode on when i started and it told me to disable it, so it’s off now.

i just turned it back on and back off again, but still same error. have another thought?

        • Anon

backed up in itunes, then erased all settings and data, then successfully absinthed, then restored in itunes! phew

  • Louis

7 times I’ve tried to jailbreak with absinthe 2.0 & 2.0.1 and 7 times I get “absinthe.exe has stopped working”. I’m going to use redsn0w to return to iOS 5.1 then jailbreak it and stay there forever.

  • Louis

7 times I’ve tried to jailbreak my 3GS with absinthe 2.0 & 2.0.1 and 7 times I get “absinthe.exe has stopped working”. I’m going to use redsn0w to return to iOS 5.1 then jailbreak it and stay there forever. This jailbreak is supposed to be easier but it the hardest one I’ve ever dealt with. It jailbroke my iPad2 but I can’t downlaod anything from Cydia.

  • Deal

Thanks!! I will be donating.. you guys have done a great job for years…. Thanks again…

  • Bob

Looks like absinthe bricked my iphone 4s. I got an error saying it couldn’t connect to something and after several minutes of waiting I exited the program and unplugged the phone. Now when it boots it just shows the apple logo with an empty bar.

It’s recognized by iTunes but it says it couldn’t activate my phone, probably because the entire OS is corrupt or something. What are my options here?

    • Bob

I managed to unbrick it with tinyumbrella. Thank god…

  • Van

I have 5.0.1 jailbroken, can I just update (not full restore) to 5.1.1 and re-jailbreak?

    • Unfortunately no, you will have to update first to iOS 5.1.1 using iTunes and then re-jailbreak and install your jailbreak tweaks again or use jailbreak apps like PkgBackup, which make it easy to reinstall the jailbreak apps and tweaks. But we prefer re-installing the tweaks.

  • jason

all worked fine when installing cydia on my 3gs, tapped on cydia icon and it said it was initialising it finished and the cydia icon has dissapeared, please help

  • 4s

Downloaded 2.01 version, connected 4s simfree to usb, clicked, waited minute or two and cydia appeared. Phone is jailbroken successfully!

Thank yooooooooooooooooouuuuuuuuu!!!! glad. waited for really big period of time!

  • Remy

My camera roll ended up empty as well (they really should have a disclaimer for this). But I synced again with iTunes and all my pictures were back.

  • nate

Everything went well with the JB besides my cameroll. I’m unable to save any pictures. All of my pictures are gone. Any help would be grately appreciated!

    • xpedia

I know it’s too late, but you should have backed up your camera roll by browsing your iPhone and copy\paste to your desktop on PC.

  • Dam

I have an iphone 4, 4.0.1 bb 01.59.00, It is currently untethered jailbroken and unlocked using tmobile….I have been aching to upgrade to the new ios 5.1.1. How can I unlock after using absinthe 2.0 to untether jailbreak? I dont really care for the baseband, as long as I can use my tmobile sim card in it. Advices?

  • erick

if it stops 3/4 way and says theres a problem and try again try by making sure theres no passcode and what worked for me was taking out the sim card

  • H-Tex

Thank you guys for your updates…..and thanks to the catz that do all their hard work on their personal time. I did have to erase everything….but after that i was all good.

  • Jyo

Well, I am a newbie when it comes to mac, iphones and jailbreaking.

I have an iphone 4s which is 7 months old, so shall i use this jailbreak? and will i be able to revert? as i might still need the warranty for certain reasons

And what are the advantages over a jail-broken iphone over a stock iphone and how do I utilize it to the max?

    Thanks for your valuable responses.

PS – I have downloaded the ABSINTHE Windows version and on the process of jailbreaking me not so new/ not so old iphone 4s :):):)

  • xpedia

I upgraded my jail broken iPhone4s from 5.0.1 to 5.1.1 with no problems then jailbroke with update 2. All is well except Siri is not working.
All my jailbreak sources remained in Cydia. I had to reinstall MyWi.

  • Yeow Boon

Can anyone help me? I keep receiving this error that my iDevice backup at itunes has password to it…and so i cannot proceed further to jb to solve this problem? ):

  • hicham

    Zillion thanks bud.. you rock!

  • Weilin

    Hey guys,

I have a problem trying to jailbreak my iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 4G. Both of which experienced the same problem.

I tried to follow the instructions stated about extracting the absinthe.exe file to the absinthe folder that I created on my desktop.

Step 1: Download Absinthe for Mac from this link and Windows from this link and save the application in a folder named “Absinthe” on your desktop.

Step 2: Double click the Absinthe zip file and extract the application to the Absinthe folder (Windows users). Navigate back to the Absinthe folder and launch the Absinthe application.

Then I right-click on the absinthe.exe and run it as administrator, but a window pops up and says “You must run this app as Administrator”. But I AM the Administrator. I tried to re-download and follow the same steps, and the same message popped out too. 🙁

What is the problem that caused it? What should I do to fix it? Help! 🙁

    • BillyBoy

Save the absinthe.exe file to a flash drive then Google “enable hidden administrator” (Win 7, Vista) and use that account.

Copy the file off the flash drive to the hidden administrators desktop and use.

It is best practice to disable the hidden administrator account once you have finished with it for security purposes.

  • Hello, if you remember the incident. All the sprint iPhone 4S bought before 11 sept 2011 turned out to be factory unlocked. My phone is from the same batch, so i am a bit reluctant to update my iPhone 4s to 5.1.1 . Do you have any clue if i would loose my unlock or it will stay factory unlocked ?

  • John

Hi. I have an iphone 4s (ios 5.1) which is unlocked by verizon wireless (after 2 months I asked them to unlock my phone) . Can I update it to ios 5.1.1 without losing the unlock? Will my phone become locked again after updating to 5.1.1? (I am out of USA now and will not come back to US!)
    Thank you guys very much.

I have an unlocked iphone 4, 04.12.01, ios 5.1.1. I had a friend with AT&T service call them to unlock it for me. I would like to jailbreak it using absinthe 2.0.2. I was wondering if doing this would lock my phone?

  • Pally

I have a gsm iPhone 4. Running osx 10.5.8. I tried jailbreaking before build 9B208 was released, I got the hmm.. Something went wrong error. The next morning i took Redmond pies videos advice and reinstalled 5.1.1 (now 9b208) and then absinthe wouldn’t support that build. I then downgraded back to 9b206, tried again, still no luck. I restored again (still 9b206) as a new iPhone, and same error. Then I tried on my brothers windows 7 computer, again nothing. This morning absinthe 2.0.2 is available. Restored to 9b208 and again same error. Restored as new iPhone (no data) and STILL won’t jailbreak. Restored my data and tried again and of course nothing!
I am no computer genius, but I have jailbroken every version of ios since 2.x.x on iPods and iPhones and have never had this much trouble!! What am I doing wrong?? Please help!

    • Pally

Also, I have tried everything listed in all of the updates above… I am perplexed.

I got a very frustrating situation, too. I tried jailbreaking about 10 time, now, an no luck. I am using a Mac on an iPhone 4, update 5.1.1 (firmw.9b208). I did it the way it was suggested in the instruction text file that is with Absinthe 2.0.2, and different methods, also, including the DFU reset option and then connecting it to iTunes. I still get the to the last stages where it will warn you that “Hmm…Something went wrong..” and the “Recovery completed..” but never the “Done” stage. I did the Reseting option, too, where all contents and settings are deleted, before opening Absinthe. I tried version 2.0.1 and 2.0.2. and still no luck. I probably tried 10 times, if not more, and still same o thing. Any suggestions??

  • Hey Guys,
I have a problem. I am running an iphone 4 gsm ATT with 5.1.1 just updated because I saw the post and I am dissapointed. I am on the 9B208 because itunes downloaded the update without me aware, and even after I downloaded Absinthe 2.0.2 with 9B208 supported, I get the error that it could not be jailbroken. I have restored, backed up everything 2x already and no luck. Modem firmware is 4.12.01 Someone please help!

I have received the error, Could not connect to Lockdownd. Now, after reading the possible fix an update asking me to go to setti9ngs, general, reset, reset all data. I have done this and still no help. My PC says the Absinthe program is not responding. Can someone please answer my questions? Thanks.

P.S. I am very tech savy and understand all this. I have also been Jailbreaking my iphones for almost 4 years now and cannot understand this. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Is there a way I can make a backup of my cydia tweaks? and automatically restore them once re-jailbroken on 5.1.1?

  • Denis

Guys, how long in takes you to erase all content and settings as in Update 2? Mine iPhone 4S is already 40 minutes doing something? Is it normal? How long should I wait?

I have an iPhone 4, and I can’t activate it because I don’t have a SIM Card (You know the story). But I managed to bypass the activation, also my iPhone is updated (Version. 5.1.1) but when I start Absinthe it tells me ‘The attached device is not activated. You need to activate it before it can be used with Absinthe.’ So is there no way to use Absinthe and I chose this one because it is the easiest I didn’t manage to do it with redsn0w so yeah. Please Help

My device has a mandatory pass code set by an MDM policy, it can’t be disabled. Will Absinthe still run and jailbreak? I know that trying to remove the passcode profile, initiates a remote wipe of the device.

Why is that after Right Clicking on the Absinthe exe and selecting the Run as Administrator option, it shows the black window and there’s a lot of (Extracting absnthe-win-2.0.4\data\9B206\iP……………..), vanishes and doesn’t do any thing? It’s not prompting me to connect iPhone or anthing?.. 🙁 What’s the problem here?… Thanks for the answer and solution.

  • Sean

Hi, I need help here. I’m trying to jailbreak my iPhone 4 (GSM) with iOS 5.1.1 (9B206) according to the Absinthe program. When I click on the Jailbreak button, the bar starts loading and after 5 – 7 mins, the program closes on its own and a message pops up saying “Absinthe.exe has stopped working.” Anyone out there experienced the same problem as me and has solutions? Running on Windows 7. :/

  • MatZ

After careful consideration I did it an it works pretty good for me! Some of the mods aren’t working but I’m assuming they haven’t been updated to work in 5.1.1… So for anyone on the fence about doing it, just go for it! I’m probly gonna trade in my 3gs now and try this with a 4s!

  • Danny

Hi I tried to jailbreak my iPhone 3GS last night and followed all the step from above and it seemed to work fine then I clicked on the cydia icon and it wiped everything off my phone even the core apps, I then restored the phone back to its factory settings 5.1.1 using iTunes and it seems to be back to norma. Can u tell me if absinthe 2.4 will still think my phone is jailbroken and what you think could have possibly gone wrong so I can avoid it when I try again. Thanks Danny
Could u email me the advice please cheers

I have jailbroken (untethered) my iPhone 4 (GSM) on iOS 5.1.1 using absinthe 2.0.4 and it seems to have worked considering I have successfully downloaded the Cydia App. Yet my 3G will not work unless I am connected to wifi — help!!! How do I get my 3G to work without being connected to wifi?
