How to Jailbreak iPod Touch 4G, iPod Touch 3G Running iOS 5.1.1 Using Absinthe 2.0.4 [Updated]

greenpois0n absinthe

pod2g and Chronic Dev team has just released Absinthe 2.0 – iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak.

In this guide, we will take you through the step by step procedure to jailbreak iPod touch running iOS 5.1.1 using Absinthe for both Mac and Windows users.

Here are some important points to note before you proceed.

  • This guide is meant for iPod touch users. iPhone users can check out this step-by-step guide, while iPad users can check out this guide.
  • Absinthe 2.0 performs an untethered jailbreak
  • Absinthe 2.0 supports iPod touch 4G and iPod touch 3G
  • Please do not forget to backup your iPod touch to iCloud or iTunes before you proceed.
  • Please ensure you’ve updated iTunes to the latest version
  • Absinthe 2.0 is compatible with only iOS 5.1.1, so if you’re on iOS 5.1 or lower (Settings -> General -> About – Version), then you should update your iPod touch to iOS 5.1.1 either using iTunes or using the OTA software update before proceeding further.
  • Please note that jailbreaking your iPod touch may void your warranty and hence proceed with caution and at your own risk

Step 1: Download the latest version of Absinthe from this link and save it in a folder named “Absinthe” on your desktop.

Step 2: Double click the Absinthe zip file and extract the application to the Absinthe folder (Windows users). Navigate back to the Absinthe folder and launch the Absinthe application.

Windows users: Please launch the application as an Administrator. Right Click on the Absinthe exe and select the “Run as Administrator” option.

Mac users: If you’ve upgraded to Mountain Lion, then check out this post to find out how to run Absinthe on OS X Mountain Lion.

Step 3: After launching Absinthe, you will be prompted to connect your iPod touch

Step 4: Please disable the passcode as the jailbreak may fail, if the passcode is enabled (Settings -> General -> Passcode Lock On -> Turn Passcode Off).

Step 5: Absinthe should detect your iPod touch and also mention the iOS firmware that is running on it. Click on the Jailbreak button.

After clicking on the Jailbreak button the tool will give a progress update on the various stages of the jailbreak process such as:

“Beginning jailbreak, this may take a while …”

“Sending initial jailbreak data. This may also take a while…”

“Sending initial jailbreak data.Your device will appear to be restoring a backup, this may take a while…”

“Waiting for reboot … not done yet, don’t unplug your device yet!”

“Waiting for process to complete… “

Step 6: In the end you’ll be prompted with the message informing you “Done Enjoy”. You can close Absinthe application. The entire process will take 5 to 10 minutes.

That’s it, your iPod touch should be successfully jailbroken and you should see the Cydia icon on the Home screen (it may not be on the first page so search for it to locate it).

Update 1:

If you’re having problems jailbreaking your iPhone then following these steps, which will involve erasing all content and Settings.

  • Make a backup of your iPhone in iTunes by right clicking on your iPhone’s name under the ‘Devices’ menu and click ‘Back Up’.
  • Once your backup is complete return to your device and go to Settings –> General –> Reset –> Erase all Content and Settings.
  • Follow the instructions mentioned above from step 1 to step 6.
  • Once jailbroken return to iTunes and restore your backup from earlier. Right click on your device name under the ‘Devices’ menu in the left panel of iTunes and click ‘Restore from Back Up…’ then select the latest backup you created before to restore the Settings, apps, photos etc.
Update 2:
  • If the solution in Update 1 doesn’t work then take a backup of your iPod touch in iTunes and try to do a full restore and then use Absinthe.
  • Once jailbroken return to iTunes and restore your backup from earlier. Right click on your device name under the ‘Devices’ menu in the left panel of iTunes and click ‘Restore from Back Up…’ then select the latest backup you created before to restore your Settings, apps, photos etc.

easiest jailbreak to date, worked first time fast and faultless for me..congrats dev team and pod2g

    • All i’ve had were issues with this. It finally got done installing the jailbreak but Cydia crashes when it is preparing the filesystem and then I have only Youtube on my Springboard.

      • Well it finnaly worked this time. Forgot to run as admenestrator.

I assume you are on Windows (where that would make sense) but I have the same problem with OSX. I’ll update folks after I try one of the suggestions below. I think “erasing all data” is what caused the problem. Going to restore from backup first and then run the jailbreak.

      • copyleft

this finally worked for me. as i say above, you should restore your backup *before* doing the jailbreak. otherwise it doesn’t work (or it didn’t for me at least).

  • Mike

    Damn! Must wait more.
When will Redsn0w that adds support for iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak be release??
    Someone know?

      and is easy

  • snap

“something seems to have gone wrong; trying to recover”
    iPad2+3G; 5.1.1 9B206.
Backed up my ipad and erased everything. Hit the Jailbreak button. Ipad says “restore complete” then reboots. See the message “slide to unlock” on ipad and I slide. Absinthe says “waiting for process to complete…” and stays like that for a few minutes.
Then Absinthe gives the message “Hm…something seems to have gone wrong…trying to recover”
    any ideas?

    • darkcoolk

    • john

If you keep getting that you need to put your device in dfu mode and reinstall 5.1.1 after that rejailbreak it with Absinthe. That’s what i had to do to make it work for me

  • emorydj

We are waiting for the ideas :))

  • anson

guys, i know how to do it , trust me
waste a little bit time to restore again , i know it annoy
    1 . restore again ( dun lazy )
    2. once done , don,t touch anything but absinthe only
    3. click jailbreak ?

    • snap

do you do a DFU-mode restore – or a regular restore from iTunes?

  • Diogo

For anyone with the “hmm something seems to have gone wrong” problem:
It happened with my iPad 2 Wi-Fi. I solved it by:
    1. Restauring to 5.1.1;
    2. Loading my iPad backup
    3. Running the jailbreak.
Took 2 minutes for it to complete, without erasing any settings. 🙂

  • DragonFly

Hi, I updated my ipod touch 4G to 5.1.1 and jailbreaked it with absinthe 2.0.4 successfully, buy cannot install any apps on it, any solutions?

  • Ian Homan

Just Use Redsn0w it worked for me, using absinthe didn’t work but redsn0w did, all you do is download redsn0w then it should recognize your device you should automatically be able to jailbreak you can click yes when the error message comes up saying that it wants you to chose the RAMDISK method (advanced users) (it should say No for this option) or the itunes backup method (for beginners) (it should say yes for this option) It’s confusing I know but it worked for me had no problems and even on Windows 8.1 so I didn’t think it worked but it did hope this helps you.
