Apple Releases Revised iOS 5.1.1 (Build 9B208) For GSM iPhone 4 [Updated]

This is interesting. As pointed out by 9to5Mac, Apple has quietly released a revised version of iOS 5.1.1.

The build number of the revision iOS 5.1.1 is 9B208, where as the build number of iOS 5.1.1 released last week was 9B206.

The revision iOS 5.1.1 is currently available only for GSM iPhone 4.

Apple hasn’t provided any details, but based on the build number change, it does suggest that it could include some minor bug fixes.

This is the second time that Apple has released a revised version of iOS, instead of releasing a new iOS software update. Apple had released a tweaked version of iOS 5.0.1 for iPhone 4S to fix some SIM card related bugs.

The timing of the release is also quite interesting. pod2g and the Chronic Dev team have released Absinthe iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak for iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and Apple TV few hours back.

It remains to be seen if the revised iOS 5.1.1 fixes the exploits used in the Absinthe 2.x.x jailbreak. We highly doubt it.

We’ll let you know as soon as we’ve an update, until then it may be a good idea to avoid updating your iPhone 4 with the revised iOS 5.1.1 software update.

If you don’t care about jailbreaking or unlocking then here’s the direct download link for GSM iPhone 4.

Update 1:

If you’ve accidentally upgraded to the revised iOS 5.1.1 Build 9B208 then download iOS 5.1.1 Build 9B206 from this download link to revert back until pod2g and team add support for this revised version to Absinthe 2.0.x. You will be able to revert as long as Apple continues to sign the older version.

Update 2:
Chronic Dev team has released Absinthe 2.0.2, which includes support for revised iOS 5.1.1 (9B208). Check out this post for more details.

I restored my iphone 4 because my cydia kept crashing.. Now be cause of Apple released a new Update… absinthe Doesnt work.. please Helppp Pod2g

    • I’m in the same boat. I had a problem installing Spite after the elegant Absinthe 5.1.1 9B206 jailbreak. I had to restore and got stuck with build 9B208. Now no jailbreaks work.

      • Sweeeeet

download the last build and restore

        • Ross

Okay, I’ve got the package iPhone3,1_5.1.1_9B206_Restore.ipsw
now what do I do? I double click it and nothing happens. The restore only gives me a list of previous back-ups.
Any ideas what I do with the file?

          • jay

hold shift on pc or option on mac and browse for ipsw

  • ragnaroc

well i updated without knowing about this and i am unable to jailbreak with absinthe. it says its doesn’t support this device. i restored to a previous backup and everything but nothing seems to be working

  • Justin

Yeah, didn’t realize they had made an update to iOS 5.1.1 and restored SPECIFICALLY for the jailbreak. Looks like that backfired on me :\

  • Ron

    Can’t believe this!!!….Just updated and now I can’t jailbeak!!!

  • RobertH

those crafty bastards, but if you did manage to jb on 5.1.1 cydia will have saved the ssh blobs on it, so if they release a downgradeing tool you could use it i guess

    • RobertH

also why does my profile pic resemble a swastika? just saying…

  • Grime

So glad I updated early, luck me!

  • no guy

just download the link posted for the old restore ipsw. go to itunes hold shift, select file downloaded and it will restore that instead of the new update. it should be the 9b206 file you are using instead of the one downloaded directly from itunes. absinthe should be able to jailbreak then.

    • no guy

also do it asap, because apple is letting you still revert to this update. otherwise, theyll stop letting you use the old ipsw file.

  • casper3oaks

I hold down shift and hit up date but it’s not doing anything except tell me it’s about to update 5.1.1. Anyone else have this problem?

    • Justin

You’ll want to download the old .ipsw from some external site, then (once its downloaded) open up iTunes, click on your phone, hold shift(or alt) and hit “restore”, not update.

      • Ryan

Apple will keep both build windows open. thats how it was for the iPhone 4s 9A405/6. both windows will be open until apple releases a new update (ie 5.1.2)

    • casper3oaks

just realized it’s not shift it’s Option that should be held down. Now the problem is that the firmware in the link above is not compatible. Know where I could find that link for the 4s?

      • “The revision iOS 5.1.1 is currently available only for GSM iPhone 4.”

The update is not available for any version of the iPhone 4S.

  • Justin

Yes, confirmed. The old .ipsw still works. Hold shift on Windows or Alt on Mac and hit the restore button, then choose the old .ipsw. Thanks very much for the tip!

  • who knows

    Hey no guy –
Please more info – I want to down grade but I need more details – go to itunes and hold shift?
    Need more than that please!!

    Step by step if possible…

    • PAKV

Just hold shift when u click restore with the iphone selected on the side bar, then select the old ipsw from the window that pops up

  • sliek

Do as what NO GUY DIrectedd… it worked for me… DO IT ASAP

  • mac

what if your still on 5.1? what shoud i do? suggestions?

    • Damien

Update to the older revision of 5.1.1 & jailbreak

    • Download the older version of 5.1.1 and jailbreak like normal. I don’t know where you could get the older version though…

  • Pinga

I didn’t know this yesterday so I upgraded my iphone4 to the new ipsw which Absinthe jailbreak kept failing! Took me few hours to tried restore, reset and also tried restore 5.1.1 by shift + but received an error code 1600, at last I tenthered jailbreak it and installed rocky racoon on cydia turned it to untethered , it worked!

  • sliek

just download the firmware for iphone 4 5.1.1 make sure it reads 9b206 not 9b208…. once downloaded it go on itunes n hold SHIFT and Find 9b206 and restore it…i just did it few mins ago..

  • Aznboy1993

I’m pretty sure if you use redsn0w (latest version) to jailbreak and then go into Cydia and manually install Rocky Racoon it should work. I haven’t tried it personally, but I don’t see why it shouldn’t (that is, unless Apple has patched the untethered exploit…which I highly doubt).

  • sliek

Red Snow did not work… ive tried that at first…

  • los

well just updated to 5.11 through itunes and i actually got 5.1.1 9B206 so maybe the 9b208 is only in certain areas i dont know how but i got lucky

  • ImadsMoOn

o.O lucky me lol i had to ubdate from the version i’ve downloading YD because my net SUCK .
Wish u good luck jailbreakers .

  • Damien

It is for this very reason I download and place every IPSW & SHSH blobs for that iOS into a zip folder.

    • SPAWN

How do I backup SHSH blobs?

I’m new to iOS and JB my iPad 3 last night. I have archived the ispw file but not sure how to locate/backup the SHSH blobs? (Windows). Should I have done this prior to JB or is it still possible/viable afterwards?

nevermind, found app on cydia, 😉

  • hellishgamer

    • Daman

  • joshua

thx pod2g it safe to update not wanker

  • john

my phone is stuck on the itunes restore.. apple is not signing “iPhone3,1_5.1.1_9B206_Restore”

please help, what can i do?

  • Bigtom

    Not pod26 blame apple

  • john

so is there no way to to get 5.1.1 at this moment in time to have a jailbroken if you dont have “iPhone3,1_5.1.1_9B206_Restore” as the firmware.. apple is not signing? is there any other way…

  • Not entirely sure Apple would be this petty, but it certainly seems like this (minor update) was intentional to stop people from jailbreaking their iPhones. It is far too convenient that it was released literally hours after Absinthe 2.0 was released. Unsuspecting jailbreakers should restore their iPhones before jailbreaking with Absinthe 2.0, and I think Apple took advantage of this to trick us into updating our firmwares, as it is only a minor update so it is still 5.1.1 and thus the user is unsuspecting. Luckily, Apple haven’t made the older version incompatible yet, so it is still possible to downgrade. – So I suggest, if you’ve accidentally upgraded, you downgrade before it isn’t possible anymore.

  • cp

Still poissible to update with 206 and JB, just use the shift button to select the older ipsw

    • Tre

still working just restored “stopped counting number of times” 206 but still can’t JB. Why, Why, Why. …..this sucks not being able to JB….

  • Que

Wow. I was super bored yesterday, so I restored my phone and jailbroken it. I hate it for those that didn’t. That was one hell of a wait. The good news is, my 5.1.1 untethered resell price has increased!

  • Tums

Hi, I am currently on 4.2.1 JB, is there a way to upgrade directly to the 5.1.1 9B206 build and then use Absinthe to JB?

    • Mohammed

      will try for you self
download the old firmware of 5.1.1(9b206) and hold shift and press update
choose the ipsw file the hit ok, if it worked for you then congratz, you can do the jailbreak, if not , i’m sorry but you should do it yesterday when it was avilable.

      • Tums

Can anyone confirm that if i update while holding shift and select the 9B206 restore ipsw that i can update to 5.1.1 9B206 from 4.2.1? Thanks

        • Grime

As I understand it, its only an update if you download from the update/upgrade button in itunes. If you’re using an ipsw file its a restore and yes that method should be ok especially for the iphone 4 under the circumstances. You should make a backup and restore it back to your phone. Don’t worry itunes will give you the option during the restore procedure.

          • Tums

  • Mohammed

hmmm so some jailbreakers have issues with the new build (9b208)
lucky me i jailbreaked on the older version of 5.1.1
    hope you have solution soon

  • Hellishgamer

Pod2g pls do something ;( i want untethered jb ;.(

  • Manu

Okay. I happen to have 9b206 shsh blob saved by TinyUmbrella a few days ago.
How do I downgrade? Does Redsn0w 0.9.11b4 support downgrade to 5.1.1 0b206? Or iFaith 1.4.2?

  • DeeDee

Guys, just follow the instructions, and make sure to get 9b206. It works fine.
Also, keep in mind that all the servers (cydia, bigboss, etc) are overloaded during the first few days with people downloading… so just retry when it fails.

  • nuttermcbutter

The download link above for reverting back is for the iphone 3? No wonder it wasn’t working on my 4s

    • Tums

The download link for reverting back to 9B206 is for iphone 4. The 4S version you can find at

    • BB

Right – anyone have the 4S link, please? Thanks.

      • It looks like there is some confusion. Apple has released a revised version of iOS 5.1.1 only for GSM iPhone 4. So if you have a problem jailbreaking iPhone 4S it has nothing to do with the revised version of iOS 5.1.1.

  • Arthur

Does anyone know if its necessary the SHSH to downgrade from 5.1.1 9b208 to 5.1.1 9b206?
I have already tryed to restore using itunes and the 9b206 IPSW (tryed in recovery mode, UDF mode, normal mode) but it always come back to the error 3194.

Can anyone help me with this?

    • It looks you’ve host filed entries pointing to Cydia rather than to Apple servers. You can either remove the host file entries or launch TinyUmbrella, tap on advanced, deselect Set hosts to Cydia on exit and close TinyUmbrella and try again. You should now be able to restore using iTunes now.

      • Arthur

It really worked, finally downgraded to 5.1.1. 9b206, Thanks for the help!
        Thank you VERY MUCH!!

  • clueless

i downloaded the 5.1.1 9b206 file that you linked on your post, but i’m not sure what to do with it? i double-clicked the app and it just opens up itunes and nothing more. i’m on the iP4 and unknowingly updated to the 9b208 version not knowing there was such a thing to prevent me from using the jailbreak. i have no idea about how to downgrade as i have no clue what are ‘blobs’ or whatever.

    • Tums

Open itunes and make sure your iphone is plugged in. On the left hand side, navigate to your iphone. Hold shift and click the restore button, itunes will prompt you to select an ipsw, and this is where you navigate to the 9b206 restore ipsw that you downloaded from the post. Hope that helps.

  • ian

Sneaky bastards Apple won’t stop me from having a jailbroken iphone 4. I’ll just stay with IOS 5.1 for now. Screw them :p

  • iphoneboy

i download the ipsw in the link and update my iphone with the ipsw in the link and now i can’t jailbreak my iphone4… 🙁

  • jaysto

So i downloaded the 206 restore from the link that was provided but it doesnt seem to contain an ispw file extension?? anyone have any insight on this?

  • Ken

Rename the file extension to .ipsw, for some reason windowns converts it to a zip or rar file.

  • Raistlin74

Does anyone know if Apple keeps on signing 5.1.1 build 906? I’ve already downloaded 906 restore but I don’t want to try to upgrade to 5.1.1_908 because I don’t want to lose JB on my iphone 4 (5.0.1).

  • dave

@chronicdevteam just twitted “Support for the new iPhone4 firmware (9B208) is on the way, should be live within a couple of hours 😀 “

  • Angel

I just Restore my iphone yeaterday and the new revised update really is espectacular. I was having trouble with performance and now it runs smoothly, wi-fi had issues now all gone, safari is faster than ever, coverflow is much fluid, the animation runs more fluidly than it did since tbe 5.0 update. The camera has more stability, the hiccups it had when switching app windows is gone, multitasking (app switching cause this aint multitasking) is more reliable, email work much better, apps dont crash (98% of the times, thats an improvement), the battery issue is still there so im convince is hardware that doesnt play well with 5.0 update. Im still testing so ill keep you updated.
