Survey: Demand For ‘iPhone 5’ Strikingly Higher

A new survey shows that while Samsung is seeing a huge surge in momentum with the launch of Galaxy S III last month, there is strikingly higher demand for ‘iPhone 5‘ compared to last year.

Research firm ChangeWave, in a new survey of primarily North American consumers, has found advance demand for the “iPhone 5” is strikingly higher than they’ve seen for any previous iPhone model.

Here are some highlights from the survey:

  • 19% of the respondents wanted to buy a Samsung smartphone. The interest in buying a Samsung smartphone has increased by 6 points thanks primarily to the launch of Samsung Galaxy S III last month.
  • Demand for Apple’x next generation iPhone was higher than the demand for iPhone 4S. 14% of the respondents said that they were very likely and 17% said that they were somewhat likely to buy the “iPhone 5” in the future.
  • It was strikingly higher than the demand seen for iPhone 4S last year when ChangeWave carried out the survey in October. At that time, 10% of the respondents said that they were very likely and 11.5% said that they were somewhat likely to purchase the iPhone 4S.
Dr. Paul Carton, 451 / ChangeWave’s VP of Research writes:

“Overall smart phone sales should spike to an all-time high this fall, and of course Apple is going to be the number one beneficiary. But besides Apple, and to a lesser degree Samsung, no other manufacturer is likely to benefit from this coming wave of demand.”

It doesn’t come as a major surprise that there is strikingly higher demand for iPhone 5 as it is widely speculated to come with a larger display, support 4G LTE networks etc.
The reason respondents want to buy Samsung Galaxy S III was “the size and the quality of the screen”. It will be interesting to see how many of these respondents would have opted for iPhone 5, if they knew it could come with the rumored bigger display.
