Couple of days back iMore reported that the entire new lineup of iOS devices such as the next generation iPhone, iPad mini, next generation iPod touch that will be unveiled at a special media event on September 12th and even the iPad 3 that was launched back in March will come with the new connector.
Other than the conflicting reports about the number of pins included in the new dock connector, we haven’t heard any other details.
Back in June, TechCrunch reported that it has also received information from their sources that Apple is indeed replacing the 30-pin connector with a smaller 19-pin dock connector in the new iPhone. iLounge reported last week that the smaller dock connector features will have only 8 pins, contradicting reports that Apple’s upcoming iOS devices will come with a smaller 19-pin dock connector and as we reported yesterday, references discovered in iOS 6 beta SDK suggests that the smaller dock connector will have 9 pins.
But it looks like Apple has some interesting plans for the new dock connector. French site Nowhereelse.fr has just published a new photo of the next generation iPhone’s casing, which as you can see below reveals that the smaller dock connector has a metal ring.
As MacRumors points out, though the purpose of the metal ring is not known, it is possible that the new dock connector will include an attachment mechanism similar to the MagSafe standard used on the Macbooks, which would allow users to insert the cable in either orientation and also make it easier for the charging cables to simply snap into place.
It is just a speculation at this stage but the next generation iPhone with MagSafe like dock connector would be pretty awesome. What do you think?
As mchunu points out, if this is indeed the casing of the next generation iPhone, then it also suggests that it will be slightly wider than the iPhone 4S/iPhone 4 and not just longer as several rumors have claimed.
