Phil Schiller Was Shocked By The Extent Samsung Galaxy S And Galaxy Tab Copied Apple’s Products

Phil Schiller

Yesterday was quite an eventful day at the landmark trial between Apple and Samsung as top Apple executives – Phil Schiller and Scott Forstall took the witness stand.

Phil Schiller – Apple’s marketing chief was the first witness to speak at the trial yesterday. He described his reaction on seeing Samsung’s Galaxy smartphone and tablet for the first time.

Here are some of the excerpts:

Apple counsel Harold McIlhenny asked Schiller about his reaction when he first saw the Galaxy S.  Schiller said: “I was pretty shocked at the appearance of the Galaxy S phone and the extent to which it appeared to copy Apple’s products. “We went from having something easy to market because it was so distinctive and so famous to having something that was difficult to market” because it could be confusing to customers.

When asked how he feels about competition. Schiller said: “Competition’s great… Every day there are companies creating producs to compete with us.”

When asked if copying is fair, Schiller doesn’t think so. “Because when you copy or steal the idea of one company’s product now you’re trading off all that investment and marketing and goodwill with customers… when you rip that off you’re trying to get all that benefit for yourself.”

Schiller said he was even more shocked when he saw the original Galaxy Tab. ”I thought they were just going to copy our whole product line.”

“It confused the customers on who’s the creator of these products. It diminishes the value we’ve created for Apple as the creator of these products, of these beautiful things… It dilutes the way customers see Apple.”

Schiller felt it had an impact. ”One of the jobs of my teams is the forecasting process… It’s our belief that some customers are choosing to buy a Samsung product because one of the things it does is look like the iPhone and look like the iPad. It also has an affect after the first purchase,” because additional customers then feed off the ecosystem of the devices they own.

“We went from having something easy to market because it was so
distinctive and so famous to having something that was difficult to

what a load of B.S. doesn’t this sort of imply that apple have lied about how good their their sales are/have been?

When asked how he feels about competition. Schiller said:
“Competition’s great… Every day there are companies creating products

(which we then try to shut down with a somewhat ropey patent infringement) oops sorry putting words into his mouth lol

I agree with this as the iphone is targeted at the technically inept and brain dead user, who is obviously unable to comprehend the significance of logo’s/branding and indeed distinguish between them.

I have never had a problem distinguishing between different brands. But then i did love doing all those “spot the difference” puzzles when i was a kid.

stroll on apple you bore me now as will your new designer/over priced paperweight when you release it. aka “the new iphone”

Perhaps your mad. “I agree with this as the iPhone is targeted at the
      technically inept and
brain dead user, who is obviously unable to comprehend the significance
of logo’s/branding and indeed distinguish between them” I am basically
an apple fan, i do believe in the product itself. Not because its easy
to comprehend but also because of the beautiful design. with your
statement you make yourself look dumb. not because someone likes a
products that works for them means that its because of the “logo.” I do
not think that Samsung or perhaps any other manufacture are bad. it just
depends on the user. I’m not trying to say apple is better than every
company. im trying to say that I LIKE APPLE BETTER. I do not know why
people like you can’t understand this. it is not a war between me and
you. its a war between them we just happen to choose different sides. A
person who can’t understand this, should not be posting comments like
      the one you just posted.

Melvarius “stroll on apple you bore me now”

      Then why are you here?

I’m no fan boy, but the only droid device that I have picked up that IMHO has a nicer look and feel than my iPhone is the motorola Razor. Everything else feels clunky or cheap to me. Most others seem slow and sluggish. I have had mostly Motorola products prior to purchasing apple, and have been keeping an eye on their lineup of products.
I used to build my own PCs for gaming. But, now I own an iMac, iPhone, and iPad. Why? because they all have great operating systems that, by far, run smoother than Andriod and windows. I still have a gaming PC, just incase I want something with a little more juice for gaming, but for school & work I will take Apple for reliability.
I’m not pretentious and care about a big apple flashing everyone from my desktop or on the side of my head. My phone is in a life-proof and rather nondescript to the passer-by. I just like knowing the the product I am using is the best it can be, and will work when I need it to.

you should try the htc one x. I have it and the iphone 4s. it just feels and looks so much nicer. People always ask me “what phone it is?” It has a bigger screen but feels was lighter. its hard to use iphones tiny screen now that i’ve been using the htc one x. wish apple would at least jump up to 4.3. Also try to use a phone that has ice cream sandwich or jelly bean its extremely smooth compared to older versions. Apple needs to really set things up. they are growing too slowly. That was fine before because android was playing catch up in the UI, but they did that with ICS and are quickly moving ahead only 6 months later with JB. JB not even being a full version upgrade.

@melvarius:disqus you said “the iphone is targeted at the technically inept and brain dead user”. Are you freaking kidding me? While I highly doubt that a brain dead user could afford the iPhone, you are posting this on a site where a large majority of readers jailbreak their devices and some of which are app developers! I would bet that there are just as many technically inept and brain dead users, such as yourself, on other platforms. Let me guess – your brain stem is probably more suited for the Jitterbug platform?

Melvarius is right. Apple is really fishing here and they’re stepping on toes. Samsung has stepped it up and are actually selling as many devices as apple and apple can’t handle the heat. I have the google nexus table and it is very good. I don’t see how it’s a copycat of an iPad which I also have. And as for the only device you’d consider over iPhone is Motorola razor, I say try the Samsung note, or htc evo, or the droid X those devices are great and they are powered by google. I as a huge electronics consumer am leaning towards favoring these google powered devices bc I have more trust in them. Meanwhile apple like to milk their customers for every nickel they can get. Don’t get me wrong I love apple but this nitpicking is out of character for them and they should focus more on releasing their stuff out earlier instead of milking the clock ex: iPhone 4s when they already had the iPhone 5

People just don’t seem to get this.
Apple is not accusing Samsung for the Galaxy Tab being ‘rectangular’.
It’s really fukin the same! If you really compare an iPad and Galaxy Tab from the unboxing to the product itself. The fact it is running android (total rip off iOS). The Samsung Product Line, smartphone to tablets.

Competition is fine. Windows Phone has their own idea about the industry, in fact even though people think Microsoft is sh*t, at least they really came up with their own idea and solution and really contribute to the industry. Samsung however, with the android os, and their product line is a total rip off.

Can someone tell me why it’s ok for Payless shoes to sell knockoff of the latest hottest Nike shoes, but it’s not ok for Samsung to sell an iPhone knockoff?

    • http://www.facebook.com/louis.matz Louis Matz

I’m guessing you would have to actually see what Nike has been able to patent, and to what extent the competitors have copies said patents. All athletic shoes look rather alike. They really haven’t changed much in the last 20 years. Its more of whats inside the shoe support wise, and some minor changes in sole designs. Other than that it would be pretty much like saying Is Levi copying Wrangler or Vice-Versa. There are just some things that have been around so long, they don’t have design patents.

      • Chris

I don’t think it would be that hard, and you wouldn’t have to go back that far to find out who first put rivets on their jeans or who made the first athletic shoe, but that is besides the point. What I’m talking about is when Nike puts out a hot new shoe, like air jordans, and you can buy a shoe that looks basically the same on the outside (except logos obviously,) for half the price at Payless shoes. How can that not be called “slavishly coping?”

        • http://www.facebook.com/louis.matz Louis Matz

very likely is copying. But, it may not be protected the same as what these electronic titans are fighting about. Go to any deregulated country, or hot spots like San Fran, China town, New york, etc… you will find plenty of knockoffs of gucci purses and shoes and stuff that are identical down to the logos. Sadly its the way business is done in the clothing/fashion industry. Some superstar or icon gets married, the next day you can buy her dress for a fraction of what she paid. Quite literally the next day. Crazy. This is why these titans are fighting so hard. patents are the only protection they have. And they basically are pissing on each other as to who had ideas first. Andriod, while not bad, is still a little sluggish. Design of the tablets supporting them are somewhat on the bulkier side. Like the wedding dresses or purses, they aren’t as good as the original, but people don’t care if they can get it for less. Hence, loss of funds for the original designer. Apple is trying to prevent these losses and keep market share.
Is it getting ridiculous? … horribly so. But if they win … we’re not talking millions .. we’re talking billions in settlements. thats why they keep fighting .. dirty or not.
