Apple: iPhone 5 Pre-Orders Top Two Million in First 24 Hours

iPhone 5

Apple has just announced that it received over 2 million iPhone 5 pre-orders in the first 24 hours.

On Friday, Apple had said that it was completely blown away by the customer response to iPhone 5. AT&T had also issued a statement earlier today that iPhone 5 set a new sales record and was the fastest selling iPhone it has ever offered.

Apple has issued the following statement:

Apple today announced pre-orders of its iPhone® 5 topped two million in just 24 hours, more than double the previous record of one million held by iPhone 4S. Demand for iPhone 5 exceeds the initial supply and while the majority of pre-orders will be delivered to customers on September 21, many are scheduled to be delivered in October. [..]

“iPhone 5 pre-orders have shattered the previous record held by iPhone 4S and the customer response to iPhone 5 has been phenomenal,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “iPhone 5 is the best iPhone yet, the most beautiful product we’ve ever made, and we hope customers love it as much as we do.”

If you were to compare this with the iPhone 4s launch, which has been Apple’s most successful iPhone, Apple had announced that it had sold one million iPhone 4s’ in the first 24 hours.

iPhone 5 goes on sale in US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore and the UK on Friday, September 21.

If you haven’t pre-ordered the iPhone 5 yet, then you will be able to pick one up at Apple’s retail stores as well as from AT&T, Sprint and Verizon retail stores or resellers like Walmart, Target, Radio Shack on Friday.

So, how many S3′s were sold?
    Poor Samsung :)

    • Alan

Does that really matter? Samsung Galaxy S III has quad-core, 2GB RAM and has peak benchmark score more than iPhone 5s first benchmark score. It’s also made of cheap plastic which looks more premium than iPhone 5′s two-tone back plate :D

Note to self: Next time try to be more subtle.

      • Sorry

Yes, and in their ad they boast about a removable battery, so when the crap software locks up you can remove the battery to restart the phone. Nice one.

        • Risto

Galaxy s3 has not yet locked up on me cant say the same with ios 5 so you cant say that ios does not freeze. Removable battery is good for people who use phone a lot and dont have the opportunity to charge. They can just replace the battery and go on.

Yeah, removable battery. That’s nice theory, but in practice majority of these people are walking with two dead batteries – one in the phone and another in the pocket.

Another thing – mayhaps initially Samsung has longer battery life etc, but ALL my friends that have bought Samsungs, some after owning iPhone and some not having owned iPhones are HATING Sammys now and one of the problem for all of them is that Sammy’s batteries quickly degrade to the point their phones do not last even 6 hours. All these friends are now getting iPhone 5 (some of them are getting iPhones after buying iPhone 4s for their spouses and seeing the difference between droids and iOS every day).

So yeah, on paper it sounds nice, in real life – not so.

          • Risto

            I agree with the ”
majority of these people are walking with two dead batteries – one in the phone and another in the pocket.”
But the other fact that iphones battery last longer after long period of use. I would not agree on. I bouht like 6 months ago a iphone 4 and when i’m on my way to work i lose about 35-40% of battery. Its only a 6 month old and the drive last around 20-25 minutes. Did the same with Galaxy S3 and i lost only 5-6% of battery. (I have usually the same brightness settings.) I use the web to check for news and listen to radio. I can say this for sure that when i bought the iphone i had to buy a battery case immediately because it did not last a full day. S3 last around 3 days with my usage. So Comparing my usage i gained around 2 days. Only a person who owns both devices and uses them the same way can determine witch one lasts longer and yeah i can’t say what will the battery be on S3 after 6 months. Iphone is a good phone don’t want to say it’s not just it’s hurting to see that some people say that one phone is garbage and the other phone is all good. I like the fact that it has a FM radio on it and i can use my internet data plan for other things not to waste it on streaming music. And for my hands i really enjoy the wider display. It was a major disappointment for me to see that iphone will not get any wider so i joined sammy. I wish you iphone users all the best on your iphone 5 purchase and if i see that the next iphone will be all that i need i will come back to iphone.

“Only a person who owns both devices and uses them the same way can determine witch one lasts longer ….” That’s exactly the case with my friends. Take two of them: their households have both iPhone 4(s) and Galaxy SII (SI) respectively. So both of them have daily comparison. One friend had iPhone 4 first and bought SII, another had S I first and bought iPhone 4s. Outcome – both hate their Samsungs and both have ordered iPhone 5 to replace Samsungs.

Poor Samsung is Number 2 on the world Wide Smartphone Market.
So it’s irelevant how many units are sold, for us the consumer.
Either way, some old rich stock holder is getting your money. Doesn’t matter if you buy Samsung or Apple gadgets.
And another thing, I’d rather have a Phone with a longer standby time and current technology and services that don’t require you to be a US citizen, even if it sold less units ;)

      • Alan

Okay sure good luck mate. You must be loving it with the older version of Android on your phone.

And while you are enjoying that longer standby time, how about also finding an Android blog to leave your comments. Cheers!

People talk, Apple always beating records.

This 200milllion sales sacrified hong kong’s per-order period, which was said to allow per-order on 14/9… No official annoucement about the cancelled preorder and revised preorder schedule.. Sad and poor customer care, Apple..
