Apple Unveils iPhone 5; Thinner, Lighter, Faster With Taller 4-Inch Display, 4G LTE Support

After months of rumors and speculations, Apple has just unveiled their hotly anticipated sixth generation iPhone called iPhone 5 at today’s “It’s almost here” media event.

As rumored, iPhone 5 looks similar to the iPhone 4S and iPhone 4, but is thinner, lighter, faster, comes with a taller 4-inch screen with 1136×640 resolution. Here’s a list of new features and improvements:

Taller 4-Inch Display

The new iPhone comes with a bigger 4-inch display with 1136×640 resolution. The screen is longer but not wider than earlier iPhone models that came with 3.5-inch display.

The Home screen now comes with 5 rows of app icons instead of 4 rows (excluding the dock). You will also be able to play movies in full widescreen (16:9) format without any black bars at the top and bottom.

Two-tone Unibody Design

It is made entirely of glass and aluminium. The new iPhone looks similar to the iPhone 4S and iPhone 4, but it comes with a two-tone back plate with the central portion made of metal and remaining portion made of glass.

Ultra-Thin

iPhone 5 is 18% thinner than iPhone 4S, it is only 7.6mm thick, where as iPhone 4S is 9.3mm thick.

Lighter

It is also 20% lighter than iPhone 4S at only 112 grams.

Ultrafast Wireless

iPhone 5 will support 4G LTE networks around the world. It also supports HSPA+ and DC-HSDPA. So unlike the new iPad, iPhone 5 will support LTE networks outside U.S. and Canada.

It can connect to Wi-Fi networks on 2.4ghz and 5ghz on 802.11n.

A6 Chip

iPhone 5 is powered by Apple’s next generation quad-core A6 chip. Apple claims it delivers up to 2 times faster performance and up to 2 times faster graphics compared to iPhone 4S A5 chip. The A6 chip is also 22% smaller.

Improved Battery Life

iPhone 5 comes with improved battery life, which is amazing when you consider that it comes with a faster processor, taller display and 4G radios.

  • Talk time: Up to 8 hours on 3G
  • Standby time: Up to 225 hours
  • Internet use: Up to 8 hours on 3G, up to 8 hours on LTE, up to 10 hours on Wi-Fi
  • Video playback: Up to 10 hours
  • Audio playback: Up to 40 hours

iSight Camera:

All-New 8-Megapixel Back Facing Camera:

iPhone 5 gets an all-new 8mp camera with backside illuminated, hybrid IR filter. It also comes with Dynamic low light mode, precision lens alignment, sapphire crystal, next gen ISP, spatial noise reduction, smart filter. It offers better low light performance and is 40% faster on photo capture.

It also comes with a new panorama mode, which will allow users to take panoramic photos.

FaceTime HD Camera:

iPhone 5 also comes with an improved front-facing HD camera. So you can make 720p HD calls to someone else’s iPad, iPod touch, iPhone or Mac with a FaceTime HD camera.

Improved Audio:

iPhone 5 comes with three microphones at the bottom, front and back.

It also comes with improved speaker design and comes with new feature called Wideband audio, which Apple says can fill up more of the frequency spectrum.

New Dock Connector

iPhone 5 comes with a new dock connector called Ligtning, which is 80% smaller than the 30-pin dock connector used in previous iOS devices. It has an adaptive interface and offers improved durability.

The new dock connector will offer much faster I/O connectivity and transfer rates than the 30-pin dock connector.

It will also offer orientation independence, so it will no longer matter which side is up when you insert it into the new iPhone like the MacSafe on the MacBook.

iOS 6

As you would expect, iPhone 6 comes preinstalled with iOS 6 that includes over 200 new features.

Color Options:

No surprises here, iPhone 5 will come in black and white.

Storage Capacities:

iPhone 5 will be available in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB storage capacities.

Pricing:

iPhone 5 will be available for $199 for the 16GB model, $299 for the 32GB model, $399 for the 64GB model for a two-year contract.

Apple has also announced that 16GB iPhone 4S will be available for $99 and 8GB iPhone 4 will be available for free with a two-year contract.

Availability:

iPhone 5 will be available for pre-order in the US, Canada, UK, France, Germany, Japan, Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore on September 14th and will be launching on September 21 and will be launching in more countries on September 28.

really not worth to upgrade I5…

what do we have here???? the iPhone 4SS (second S=Stretched).

  • m Arch Tom’s on Bar N Ass

so we have a brick holding paper on the desk which is useful as a modem for hi-speed internet connection. (over wi-fi with personal hotspot) a taller 4″ display is not worth an upgrade from 3gs & eventually the new dock connector design with orientation independency is quite interesting for sync speed (although we can sync over wi-fi yet) & for getting rid of that annoying dbl check on the orientation of the dock connector. i see no mention of redesigned in ears headphones. conclusion: i can wait for an upgrade until iOS 7 when iPhone 3gs is likely to be left behind.

what about the sim card, is it going to be smaller than the current one as was mentioned in the last couple of months?? Based on the above mentioned changes, it is difficult to see what is so attractive about the new IPhone 5 incomparison with IPhone 4s. I am sure that there is a lot more than what have been mentioned in the above article.

  • 4s Owner

    Nano or micro sim?

    • James

Nano sim – it’s under the spec sheet on Apple’s site.

  • What is Apple Doing

The problem is that this should’ve been a a great bump. With Apple only releasing one phone a year they need to do more. They can’t be playing checkup. So with this phone they have hardware specs that checkup with specs from phones that came out 4-6 months ago with a dumb screen size. Now we’ll have to wait an other year for any improvements from Apple while everyone else will be even more advance in the next 5 or 6 months.

    what a shame

  • barondebxl

Apple doesn’t impress like they used to cause the competition has passed apple a couple of years ago.

  • Ben

I was waiting to c if i would upgrade from my iphone 4S, but i guess not

  • CU_Tiger

I like it. The internal upgrades should be well worth it. Plus, jailbroken iPhone 4’s are going for well over $200 on ebay, so this upgrade with essentially be free. Not bad at all.

  • Jim, Jack, & Johnny

All rumors pointed at 1 gig of ram… I didn’t see that mentioned anywhere. Can someone show me if this is true?

    • http://www.iphonehacks.com iPhoneHacks

Apple doesn’t usually mention the RAM, but we’ll soon find out.

      • Jim, Jack, & Johnny

        Great. Thanks!

      • iphonemaniac

Not impressed with iPhone 5. iPhone 5 is not a game changer. Will stick with iPhone 4. Steve Jobs!, we miss you and your innovations.

  • m Arch Tom’s on Bar N Ass

iphone 4 & 4s are not a good buy, why do you think it’s sold @ 0$ with a 24mnth contract? i got a 3g b4 upgrading to 3gs with a advanced payment of 250€, it’s common sense, no matter the way you look at it, EU get WHAT EU pay for. marc

      And we care because…?

  • Dee

Is that 14th of September release Australian time 14th or the US 14th? Because we are a day ahead :/

  • il Santi

No NFC??? No BT 4??? OMG! That’s what I call innovation. Damn! Galaxy S3 really is better. Goodbye Apple.

    • http://www.iphonehacks.com iPhoneHacks

iPhone 5 comes with Bluetooth 4.0, but it was first available in iPhone 4S, so nothing new to report.

      • il Santi

        Does it have 4G speeds?

        • http://www.iphonehacks.com iPhoneHacks

Yes it supports 4G LTE networks

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Edwin-Alcaraz/100000026485979 Edwin Alcaraz

don’t you know how to read? iPhone 5 will support 4G LTE networks around the world. It also supports HSPA+ and DC-HSDPA. So unlike the new iPad, iPhone 5 will support LTE networks outside U.S. and Canada.

  • Ross

I am Disappointed with the shape. Same old stile.

  • Troll guy

Is it the new iphone 4s XL??
    Lololol

  • racas01

The new Apple iPhone 5 is here! It wasn’t a shocking surprise, but rather a very solid upgrade to the existing iPhone 4S. Apple delivered on all fronts starting with a larger, 4-inch screen that’s bigger but still comfortable for one-handed use, going through 4G LTE support and ending up with the 2x more powerful Apple A6 chip and improved battery life.

All the rest got a solid update as well – the 8-megapixel camera now comes with a sapphire lens that is more durable. And iOS 6 brings a couple of interesting new features, but if we had to narrow it down to one weakness in Apple’s well-oiled machine, it’d be exactly that – iOS seems to be lagging behind a bit in features when compared to Android and Windows Phone. Or maybe, if lag is not the exact word it’s suffering a bit from its closed nature – it seems that we’ve just grown too used to it.

When do we expect the India launch for iPhone5

    • http://rounak.me/ Rounak Jain

next two three months I guess, although the price would be pretty high like last year

  • Apple

The article has a couple of mistakes such as ( 1136×60 resolution ) it should be 1136×640

    • http://www.iphonehacks.com iPhoneHacks

We’ve fixed the typo, thanks for pointing it out!

  • jko

Same whining when 4s came out. 4s outsold all other phones. Stop reacting and go buy what fits you but in your ignorant arrogance, let’s not conclude the outcome already.

    • http://www.facebook.com/christian.mercado.56211 Christian Mercado

yea people complained about the 4s but then again siri was very appealing but the phone it self was a disappointment but loyal costumers still bought it but that doesent mean that they was satisfied not to mention that we have to wait once a year for another phone this build up of disappointments is killing apples buzz and value people are now looking else where because apple is not giving us what we want when we want it other they just now semi caught up to the competition when it should be the other way around since their created this to begin with slowly but surely if they dont change the way they do things they will get left behind

      • jko

Incredible how poor the sales of the Iphone 5 is. Apple getting left behind and bankrupt. Oh…they’re sold out. Dur.

  • Kryojenix

WHEN CAN WE JAILBREAK IT?! ;-P

  • defmad

In a way, I guess this is good for anyone ‘not’ upgrading from a 4S (unless you need/want LTE support). But for a 4S user like me, I’d be happy to give it a pass. My contract will end just before the next iPhone will be released (5S?), so I’ll upgrade then. Knowing my luck, the iPhone 6 will have all the major radical improvements and I’ll be stuck with the phone before it. Meh, I’ve kinda learnt these things happen with Apple.

  • joe

    dual or quad core?

  • i5 Sucks

I could have upgraded in February. I have the i4 by the way. Don’t really care for this phone at all. Yes it runs better and faster. But its the same restricted small display. Am I not to expect a faster phone or something. I mean c’mon. I’m going to wait till the Note II comes out or get the SIII. Totaly not impressed !!!!!!

  • Srr!

most people are disappointed because they were expecting the crazy leaps apple offered when the 4 came out… I think one article was right about the iPhone5 only being a big deal for people who don’t already have an iPhone or those who really want LTE.. otherwise, not really a big deal.. i Kinda like the disappointment though, because now I have an excuse to try out an android while possibly waiting a year or two for the next iPhone!

    think of it as a lonnnger waiting period while experimenting;
Always good to try something new :)

  • Realitycheck

Love that all you are swearing off of the iPhone. Haha. It will be even better when all the same assoles are posting in 3 weeks bitching about having to wait for a jb for iOS 6 on their iPhone 5’s.

  • iphone 5 and galaxy sIII

it’s funny how everyone is saying they disappointed. But what i can say is you have to expect that. Apple does not follow a trend that other company do unless it can approve on it and the mass world is using it. such as NFC is still not being used everywhere. I’ve learned Apple fans and google fans your all have problems your want everything regardless if you going to ever use it or not. most people that have the NFC chip in their google phone or the google wallet hardly use it or even used it at all. it’s just like iphone passport that’s coming out not to many people will use it either. just pick a f#$k&^g phone and be happy. stop complaining for stuff you dont even use. i had both an android and ios phone and i realize i like the iphone but on both phones there’s a lot of stuff they claim they do i did not use. i use all the features they claim they do on the first few days then i go about my business again.

in reality your a bunch of idiots every year same old sh*t.
and apple steal out sell the compitition and the compitition still sell what the set out to sell and then some.
that’s what i call great business strategy.
let your consumers fight it out every year and they go about their business.
your a bunch of sheep like the samsung commercial suggested not just iphone fans but everyone including androids fans and soon to be windows phones.
