How to Jailbreak iOS 6 And Install Cydia

Redsn0w

RedSn0w 0.9.13dev4 that was released by the iPhone Dev team to jailbreak iOS 6 beta works with the iOS 6 that was released to the public last week.

In this guide, we provide you the step by step procedure to jailbreak your iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod touch 4G running iOS 6 using Redsn0w.

Update:

Check out our step-by-step tutorial to jailbreak iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS using the latest version of Redsn0w and this one for iPod touch 4G. It’s a lot easier as you don’t have to go through the hassle of installing Cydia manually.

Here are some important points to note before you proceed.

  • This guide is only meant for iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch on iOS 6. It is currently not possible to jailbreak iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPad 2, iPad 3 running iOS 6.
  • Redsn0w 0.9.13dev4 supports only a tethered jailbreak (except for iPhone 3GS with older boot). This means that to make use of any jailbreak app, you must use the “Extras -> Just Boot” button in Redsn0w every time you reboot the device.
  • Redsn0w 0.9.13dev4 does not install Cydia currently, you need to install it manually. We’ll be showing you how to do that in this guide.
  • Please do not forget to backup your iPhone to iCloud or iTunes before you proceed.
  • Please ensure you’ve updated iTunes to the latest version.
  • Warning: If you depend on Ultrasn0w to unlock your iPhone, then DO NOT update to iOS 6.
  • Please note that jailbreaking your iPhone may void your warranty and hence proceed with caution and at your own risk
  • Please do not jailbreak your iOS device to pirate apps from the App Store.

Follow these instructions to jailbreak your iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPod touch on iOS 6.

Step 1: Download RedSn0w 0.9.13dev4 from this link and save it in a folder named “Redsn0w” on your desktop.

Step 2: Download iOS 6 firmware file for your iOS device from this link for iPhone 4 & iPhone 3GS and this link for iPod Touch 4G.

Step 3: Double click the Redsn0w zip file and extract the application to the Redsn0w folder and then launch the Redsn0w application.Windows users should run Redsn0w as ‘Administrator’ (right-click on the Redsn0w exe and select ‘Run as an Administrator’).

Step 4: Click on the Extras button.

Step 5: Click on the Select IPSW button and select the iOS 6 firmware file that you had downloaded in Step 2. It should successfully identify the firmware file.

Step 6: Click on the Back button and then click on the Jailbreak button.

Step 7: You will now be prompted to select the options for your iOS device. Ensure that Install SSH option is enable as it will be required to manually install Cydia.

Step 8: You will now have to put your iOS Device into the DFU mode. Turn off your iOS device and connect it to the computer. Redsn0w will take you through the necessary steps:

(a) Hold the Power button on iOS device down for 3 seconds:

(b) Now simultaneously hold the Home button and keep the two buttons pressed for 10 seconds:

(c) Now release the Power button while keeping the Home button pressed until Redsn0w detects the device.

Step 9: Your iPhone should reboot now. Please remember to release the Home button.

Step 10: You iPhone will be rebooted again and Redsn0w will now begin uploading the new RAM disk and kernel.

Step 11: You will be notified that the jailbreak for the device is tethered. This means that to make use of any jailbreak app, you must use the “Extras -> Just Boot” button in Redsn0w every time you reboot the device.

Step 12: Wait for the process to complete and your iOS device to reboot.

Step 13: You need to put your iOS device in DFU mode again. Turn off your iOS device and connect it to the computer. Then follow these instructions:

(a) Hold the Power button on iOS device down for 3 seconds:

(b) Now simultaneously hold the Home button and keep the two buttons pressed for 10 seconds:

(c) Now release the Power button while keeping the Home button pressed until iTunes detects that it’s in recovery mode.

Step 14: Click on the Back button and then click on the Just Boot button. A pineapple logo should appear on your iOS device, indicating a tethered boot.

Step 15: Wait for the process to complete, your iOS device will reboot multiple times and once it is complete, you should see the Lock screen on your iOS device.

That’s it, your iOS device has now been successfully jailbroken.

How to Install Cydia on jailbroken iOS 6 device:

Step 1: Ensure that your iOS device and your computer are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

Step 2: You now need to find out the IP address of your iOS device so that you can connect to it using SSH. Launch the Settings app and navigate to Wi-Fi, tap on the arrow next to the Wi-Fi network it’s connected to, note down the IP address.

Step 3: Launch Terminal on your Mac or PuTTY (download link) on your Windows PC.

Step 4: Execute the following command: ssh root@<IP address> [Note: Replace <IP address> with the IP address you had noted in Step 2 - Example: ssh root@10.1.10.1 ]

Step 5: After few seconds it will connect to your iOS device, and prompt you if you want to connect to the device. Type yes and press Enter. You will be prompted to enter the password. Enter alpine as the password.

Step 6: After you’ve successfully connected to your iOS device, copy the following command and paste it into Terminal and hit Enter.

wget -q -O /tmp/cyinstall.sh http://downloads.kr1sis.net/cyinstall.sh && chmod 755 /tmp/cyinstall.sh && /tmp/cyinstall.sh

Step 7: It will download the relevant files, install Cydia on your jailbroken iOS 6 device. Your iOS device will reboot and you should now see the Cydia icon on the Home screen. Note: If you get any permission issues, you can ignore them.

Step 8: Launch Cydia, it will prepare the filesystem (which can take a few minutes) and it will exit when complete.

If you’ve any trouble jailbreaking your iOS device, then you can check out this video tutorial:

That’s it, you should now be able to use Cydia on your jailbroken iOS 6 device.

After the jailbreaking process is complete, do not forget to checkout our article on tips to keep your iPhone secure.

Also check out this comprehensive list of jailbreak apps and tweaks that are compatible with iOS 6.

Update:

Check out our latest step-by-step tutorial to jailbreak iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS using Redsn0w. It’s a lot easier that this method as you don’t have to go through the hassle of installing Cydia manually.

As always, let us know how it goes.

i hope untethered version will come out soon

    • http://www.iphonehacks.com iPhoneHacks

      It’s tethered

      • grim reefa

I think he knows that. Hence hes hoping the “untethered” will be out soon.

        • http://www.iphonehacks.com iPhoneHacks

He initially commented, Is it tethered or untethered? So we said it is tethered, he later updated the comment to say hope the untethered is available soon.

  • Alan

Thanks a ton, it works like a charm.

  • random

I did the jailbreaking part without problems but when it came to the terminal it said it doesnt recognize “ssh” as an internal or external command. What can I do?

    • http://www.iphonehacks.com iPhoneHacks

      What’s the IP address?

      • random

          Did you try: ssh root@192.168.1.33

          • random

I did, I have windows 7 though, does it matter?

          • random

yes. i have windows 7, does it matter?

          • http://www.iphonehacks.com iPhoneHacks

Yeah looks like you’re trying this on the command prompt :) You will need to use an SSH client like PuTTY ( http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html) on Windows to be able to ssh to your iPhone.

          • random

it finally worked. Thank you so much!

      • random

I do exactly the same and still doesnt work. I have windows though, does it make a difference?

We’ve updated the post with an example to avoid any confusion.

  • MuscleMass

Well, worth a try. Waitin’ on my 5; still have my 4 (and a cracked 3GS – not jailbroken – cracked screen).

it keeps telling me password is denied?? what do i do>??

    • http://www.iphonehacks.com iPhoneHacks

alpine should work, as that’s the default password

      • http://www.facebook.com/JLDeBias Jason Lee DeBias Sr.

nope, i tried it a bunch of times and it keeps saying access denied. any thoughts??

      • http://www.facebook.com/JLDeBias Jason Lee DeBias Sr.

unless there’s something i’m missing, but I did it step by step..

          What’s the exact error message?

          • http://www.facebook.com/JLDeBias Jason Lee DeBias Sr.

after I put the ip address in it asks for the password. then it says access denied and keeps asking me to put password in. i’m using putty on windows vista.

          • http://www.iphonehacks.com iPhoneHacks

            Strange, alpine should have worked.

          • http://www.facebook.com/JLDeBias Jason Lee DeBias Sr.

ok i got it. Instead of putting ssh root@, I just put root@ then the password worked. thanks for responding.

          • http://www.iphonehacks.com iPhoneHacks

Great, which was the reason for the exact error message :) … Good to know it’s resolved.

  • josh

i always get “connection closed by a remote host” in my terminal

    • http://www.iphonehacks.com iPhoneHacks

That’s because your iOS device has not been jailbroken. Try to follow the steps in the first section again and then try to install Cydia.

  • kevin

Got the jailbreak to work, got cydia to finally not crash after the 2nd install. Everything working and now the phone is stuck in a reboot loop.
Tried to restore and get itunes error 2003

Any suggestions on how to get out of the reboot loop. Tried everything.
    Iphone 4 if it matters.

    • http://www.iphonehacks.com iPhoneHacks

The restart with volume up button will not work for the reboot loop as it is tethered.

Regarding 2003 error, are you using a USB hub to connect your iPhone to the computer. Try connecting it directly or use another USB port to see if it helps.

do we know that this will work for apple tv 3 5.0.1?

iPhone 4. Trying to use Putty to install Cydia. Every time I Click “Open” is says “Server unexpectedly closed network connection”. Did jailbreak three times. Running both Redsn0w and Putty as administrator. Did “Just Boot”. iPhone was “awake”. I have the correct IP Address (192.168.X.XXX). Even went into the router and opened some ports. Sooo. If anyone has come across this problem and has solved it please post what you did. Thank you.

    • http://www.iphonehacks.com iPhoneHacks

It looks like you’ve not jailbroken your iPhone, follow the steps in first section again.

      • John

Yes I had to do it 4 times to get it to finally accept my connection. I think you have to not just unzip the redsn0w into the directory “redsn0w” on the desktop, but the program files NEED to be in that folder. Not the sub folder created when you extract.

  • M-C4D

I tried this, and it didn’t work, and now my iPod wont turn on

    • http://www.iphonehacks.com iPhoneHacks

Just try resetting your iPod touch. Hold the Home button and the Sleep/Wake Button together until you see the Apple logo.

  • Ge

Is there some way to jailbreak iphone 5 now? Untethered og tethered ?

  • http://www.facebook.com/kansway Kasparas Kizlaitis

for me, on iPhone 4, everything worked as expected! Hope more tweaks will get compatible with iOS 6 soon.

  • Dono

I just tried to update my iphone 3GS via computer and itunes. Halfway through it said there was an error and no SIM card was detected.

So then I unplugged it all and shut the phone down. Followed all the steps to jail break it and I’m at the same place as before. My phone refuses to recognize any SIM cards.

My phone reads “Could not activate Iphone” Server is unavailable. I tried o downgrade to 5.1.1 iOS but the same thing occurs.

    Whats the next step?

    Any help is greatly appreciated

  • John

Cydia doesn’t seem to want to cooperate with me. When refreshing data is says “The method driver /usr/lib/apt/methods/http could not be found. I checked and that entire directory is empty. Reinstalled Cydia. Same problem. Am i missing something? lol

  • sean

    Hello,
Please does this jailbreak work with gevey sim?

    • http://www.iphonehacks.com iPhoneHacks

This jailbreak has nothing to do with Gevey SIM. As far as we know, Gevey SIM does not support iOS 6 baseband.

  • Wesley

@iPhoneHacks:disqus Hoping you can give me some incite… I’m jailbreaking my iPhone 4 successfully. I’ve done it three times or so already. I’m seeing the Pineapple logo and everything is working as stated in the description. I keep getting stuck trying to install Cydia. I’m using Windows 7 and Putty. I’m following every step accodingly but keep getting a “PuTTy Fatal Error” – “Network Error: Connection Refused” What am I doing wrong? What should I do? Help!!!

    • http://www.iphonehacks.com iPhoneHacks

Connection refused suggests that you have not successfully jailbroken your iPhone. Suggest rebooting your iPhone and starting it all over again.

      • Wesley

It’s possible to have the Pineapple icon appear your iPhone but it not be jailbroken? I actually just checked the IP on my computer and the IP addresses from it and my iPhone don’t exactly match. The last two digits are off, everything else is the same. Could this be where the problem lies?

        • John

No. That’s normal. Those are the router assigned addresses for your network. Make sure you followed the instructions exactly. Also try putting the redsnow files directly in the redsn0w folder on your desktop

    • John

I had the same problem and eventually it worked. lol. Actually the only thing I did different before it worked was moved the redsnow program files into the desktop folder directly. Because when I unzipped it into the redsnow directory it created a sub directory. *shrug*

  • agnius

thanks ANN a lot!!! for me the same root@ip address and pass alpine :)

I have a 3GS with a 05.16.05 bootrom. Would untethered be possible with that bootrom?

    • http://www.iphonehacks.com iPhoneHacks

05.16.05 is the baseband, not the bootrom. It depends on when your iPhone 3GS is manufactured to determine if it has the older bootrom or the new one.

      • http://profiles.google.com/sebastian.rasch Sebastian Rasch

Oh alright. Then I guess I have the older bootrom because it worked before when they said you need the older bootrom! ;)

I tried 3-4 times to Jailbreak my Ipod touch 4g on IOS6, followed step by step in the guide, it uploaded ram , patched kernal, i even got the runnin pineapple with the blue loading bar, right before the blue bar reaches the end about — that much space, my ipod restarts and it boots up regularly as if i never jailbroken it… tried to do SSH but nothing worked, but strangely i was able to use the battery percentage feature the first time, i unchecked it the second time and now i cant use it and the ssh is still not working

Does this work with the ipad?

  • Dr. Potato

I got it to work, but when I lock the screen when music is not playing, it shuts off into DFU mode.

Now it no longer turns on or gets detected in DFU, Recovery, or anything…Just sits there.

    How can I remedy this?

    …Without a power button.

  • salmaa101

so i have an ipod touch 4g running ios 6.0.1 but both my home button and my power button dont work, pretty shitty luck ha?? anywayz i say this article http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=23009 and it shows u how to put ur device into dfu mode without using any buttons but the comments at the end of the page say it mostly left the screen black and stuff, does anyone by any chance have an alternative that actually works? @iphonehacks ?
    thanks x

  • GPS

Mine just get’s stuck on “waiting to reboot” after – running redsn0w (in admin mode + xp comp), selecting ios6 ipsw, jailbreak phone, DFU mode, it does that “matrix” thingy, then the pineapple running man thing goes and it reboots. Then I put it back into DFU mode to do a tethered boot, selecting the ipsw before boot, and the bar appears to be a millimeter away from complete, but it won’t nudge. Just says “waiting for reboot”
    Using Windows 7 Ultimate edition

Is cydia available for iPad 2 and if so how do I get Siri ?

  • http://www.facebook.com/sahayvivek Vivek Sahay

Take a bow !! You are a super star !!

Everything happened perfectly. Except that after the jailbreak it says “No Service”. I bought iPhone 3GS in US and came to India, got it jailbroken and was using it perfectly fine. I then upgraded the OS for which I had to undergo the entire process which you mentioned.

Now that everything has been setup (updated OS and Cydia as well) it is not logging onto network (cellular). Can you please help ?
