Apple should officially shut down Ping – its social network for music, which it had launched back in 2010.
Ping allowed users to follow their favorite artists and friends to discover the music they’re downloading, listening to and talking about.
Event though 1 million users joined Ping in the first 48 hours, it failed to gain traction and was considered one of Apple’s missteps. Apple has instead deeply integrated Twitter in iOS 5 and Facebook in iOS 6, which was released couple of weeks back.
In May, Apple’s CEO Tim Cook had hinted at the company’s plans to kill Ping at the AllThingsD’s D10 Conference. Apple quietly announced plans to shut down Ping on September 30 after the iPhone 5 event on the Ping channel on iTunes.
The Ping menu no longer appears in iTunes. Any playlists users made within Ping will be converted to iMixes, the company’s publishable playlist format.
Did you ever use it? Are you sad that Apple has killed Ping?
