App Store Painfully Slow in iOS 6? Here’s a Tip to Fix It

App Store app

Has the App Store become painfully slow after upgrading to iOS 6?

Apple has revamped the App Store app in iOS 6, but that’s not the reason for the performance issue, it’s also not your 3G/4G LTE connection. Folks at OSXDaily have discovered the root cause of the performance issue is the Genius for Apps feature.

So if the App Store has become painfully slow, you may want to disable location services for the Genius for Apps feature until Apple addresses the issue in the next iOS software update. OSXDaily reports that the issue has been observed on iOS 6 devices that have grey or purple icon next to  “Genius for Apps” setting. OSXDaily reports that the issue is also affecting users of newer iOS devices like iPhone 5 and iPad 3.

You can disable it by following these simple steps:

  • Launch the Settings app
  • Tap on Privacy
  • Then tap on Location Services
  • Scroll down and tap on System Services
  • Now tap on the Genius for Apps toggle to disable it.
  • You’re not done yet. Now press the Home button.
  • Then double press on the Home button, which will display the multitasking bar with the recently used apps.
  • Tap and hold App Store app until it jiggles, then tap on the red (-) button to close the App Store app.

That’s it, launch the App Store app, it should now be a lot faster now. Disabling location services for Genius for Apps  should also help conserve battery life. Check out our tips of manage iPhone’s battery life for more details.

Are you facing this issue? Let us know if disabling location services for “Genius for Apps” fixed the issue.

The App Store isn’t slow. It’s the downloads from the App Store that are slow.

I figured it out. You need to turn off genius in general not just the location

    Go To:
    Settings
    Itunes and app stores
    Click on your email/account
    Press view apple id
    Enter your password
Then press turn off genius for apps
Then hit turn off and your all set enjoy the speedier app store

sorry, doesn’t help me, I’m using iPod Touch 5th generation 32gb, iOS 6.0.1 and I have about 13 mbps wifi speed. It should only take me about a minute to 2 minutes to download this 50 MB app but it takes like 8-10 minutes, got any other suggestions?

those tips are for making the store load faster or at all, meaning the navigation in it. it shouldnt influence the download speed of an app.

This has made the App Store a lot faster on my 4S, it didn’t fix my broken ‘Featured’ page as it suddenly went blank the other day and doesn’t load no matter how long I wait. Weird things like that happen to the App Store on my phone; at one point the ‘Games’ category disappeared for a couple of weeks.

Not just speed it’s small print and cross swipe instead of much faster scroll down. That’s the major problem.

  • phil

didnt work for me, my app store open and keeps loading, nothing happens

  • Alex

I got the iphone 5 and I experienced very slow app downloads, even on wifi. I googled around and I found several solutions like setting manual DNS and enabling http proxy but this tip definitely did the trick! Downloaded a 50 MB app in just a few seconds.
