Apple TV OS 5.1 Software Bricking Apple TVs?

Appletv screen

The 5.1 software update  for Apple TVs came out a couple months ago, but it turns out it’s been rendering some Apple TV unusable. Solution? Restore back down to 5.0.2.

Odd how this hasn’t come to light sooner, but AppleInsider found a long, and growing (16 pages now), thread in the Apple support forums who said the September update to the Apple TV OS 5.1 bricked (or maybe pucked) their Apple TVs.

There isn’t a heck of a lot of detail. Generally, people update and then their Apple TV just stopping working like before. Some folks just get a black screen, others network issues, still others streaming issues. The only thing generally consistent is the solution:

Downloading the IPSW restore files from Apple, connecting the Apple TV to a Mac, wiping, and restoring to 5.0.2.

Here are the links to the IPSW files (from the support thread):

Apple TV 2:,1_5.0.2_9B830 _Restore.ipsw

Apple TV 3:,1_5.0.2_9B830 _Restore.ipsw

We’d like to know if you’re having (or had) the same issues. Lots of Apple TVs out there, so since there hasn’t been widespread furor about the update, it might be isolated to a few devices.

I reported these issues to apple during the beta stages of the software who told me all my Apple TV boxes must have magically gone faulty and to visit an apple store to get a replacement, I love apple products but I’m disappointed that one of my most used products is buggy

the Apple TV 3rd with latest iOS works fine with me. Waiting for jailbreak.

I’m afraid, a jailbreak for ATV3 will not ever come to light imo.

I believe Apple still signing 5.0.2 at the moment. I restored my ATV2 just a couple of weeks ago, the ATV2 is currently running on 5.0.2.

How did you roll it back to 5.0.2? The links below do not work.

I didn¨t roll it back, it was already on 5.0.2. I read on the firecore forum that Apple was still signing 5.0.2. so I decided to restore. Sure enough, itunes restored 5.0.2. for me.
