iPhone 5 Touchscreen Bug Discovered By Game Developer [Updated]

Folks at Recombu have published a video which shows a bug with the iPhone 5 display, which was first observed by game developer CMA Megacorp.

They’ve observed the iPhone 5 screen stops responding to touch inputs when you slide the finger across the screen in quick successions.

As they’ve demonstrated in the video below, iPhone 4S units running iOS 6.0.1 and iOS 6.0 don’t seem to be affected by the bug, whereas iPhone 5 units running iOS 6.0.1 and iOS 6.0 exhibit the problem, which could indicate that it is a hardware related issue.

The problem could be due to the in-cell display used in iPhone 5. The in-cell display technology integrates touch sensors into the LCD, which eliminates the need of a separate touch screen layer. The absence of a separate touch screen layer not only helps to make the screen thinner, but it also improves the quality of displayed images. Colors get a boost, too, with color saturation that’s 44 percent greater than before.

While the average user may not notice the glitch, it could be a problem while playing games that need quick diagonal scrolling and swiping motions.

Check out the video below and let us know if you’ve noticed this issue on your iPhone 5:

We were able to reproduce the bug on the iPhone 5 and the 5th generation iPod Touch as well. So as iMore reports, it seems to be an issue with the 4-inch display.

  • Sahid

Same here. Does that mean I now have an excuse to exchange my iPhone 5 for a new one?

    • Alex

Doubtful unless they can prove its a hardware issue. They can say its software and just tell you to update.

      • chungpham2004

update to what, you moron?? it’s happening even on the latest ios version…

        • iTim87

@google-c0a7d3145527ff2303c08b7b37b04e85:disqus Chill bro, it’s going to be all right. Apple will release their stinkin’ iPhone software update soon enough :P

The only thing keeping me from buying other smartphone brands is apples customer service …. Their extreme ease of replacing if the phone f up within the warranty time…

I was unable reproduce this on my 16gb black att iphone 5. Scrolling feels very smooth and responsive and I’ve tried rapidly scrolling diagonally as shown in the video. It’s still smooth and responsive.

  • Drei

You’re using it wrong! Scroll slower…

    • Tommy

      That’s what she said.

The author said they could not replicate the problem the person who reported it. We have 2 and no problems with them.

it looks to be software as I was able to reproduce it on my iphone 4 running 6.0.1

  • Tom

This is a nonissue until a developer releases the “masturbate” app. LOL

There was a flash game called orgasm girl that was floating around the net several years ago. I can see how such a game would require rapid rubbing of the iphone screen. But then again, I don’t think Apple would approve such a game.

      • iTim

I never thought I would hear of seeing the day where people get off to rubbing off a display on a smartphone. This world really is going to sh**. Waste of time.

  • Mars

Yep yep mine stops too AT&T 16 gig white. 6.0.1

  • Goze

Steve Jobs was good but not Tim Cook

          • FML

Yeah Steve Jobs used to do all the testing.

    • http://twitter.com/justmeblue5ft3 justmeblue5ft3

I don’t have any problems with the 2 that we purchased. I check every time something is said to be “wrong” and our 2 iPhone 5’s are great, no problems.

  • Rob

My iPhone 5 does not do it on iOS 6

  • http://www.facebook.com/THExREALxTACO Jeremy Taco Patterson

Reproduced it on my Black 32GB AT&T iPhone 5… Though, as posted, I REALLY can’t see this ever even being found unless you’re specifically looking for it…

  • Oskar

I got it to on my black 16GB iphone, but i allso aggree with Jeremy Taco Patterson. To find this glitch you would have to search for it, and to get further disturbed by it you would have to think of it all the time and make it happen on purpose.

I think it has to do with inertia scrolling. When you do a quick swipe up or down, it starts the fast scrolling. Tap the screen and the scrolling stops. To scroll large distances, I would swipe, then swipe again when it starts to slow down, but not swipe as fast as it’s being done in the video nor would it make any sense to swipe that fast when scrolling. The point is to scroll fast without having to swipe mindlessly. This wouldn’t happen in a game because the game would be designed around fast swiping. Fruit ninja works just fine, no matter how fast I swipe.

    iphone 5 32gb Nope running ios 6.0.1
    iphone 4 16gb running ios 5.1.1 YES

  • lordapes

Iphone4s, ios6.0.1, happened to me. Not an issue tough.

  • Shrivatsa Somany

Could it be the “accidental touch” thing?

  • Michael

Believe your phone was screwed dude. I just did a rapid scroll several times through 8000 songs with no slow downs or stops at all.

  • Mrgeek

My guess is that it’s a hardware buffer issue. With the increased resolution of the screen size, the buffer is filling up faster than the phone can process

    • iTim

That is why Apple increased the RAM to 1GB and the processor to 1.3GHz…plus its got two cores. It is a hardware issue most likely due to the technology behind the in-cell touvhscreen.

  • Grayson

I have the iPhone 5 White 32gb and I bought mine through pre orders, and mine is also doing this glitch.

  • JT

Damn it all makes sense now. When I play Scramble I get frustrated because it freezes when I’m sliding to make words. Tried my wife’s 4s and no problem but my i5 happens frequently. What can be done??

  • niall bradbrook
