Your iPhone Automatically Changes Time For Daylight Savings Time

Daylight Savings Time

We’re seeing a number of users on Twitter wondering if iPhone’s clock will automatically move back an hour to mark the end of Daylight Saving Time.

The short answer is “Yes”, your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and even your Mac will automatically move back an hour on their own.

You don’t need to set the time back manually as long as you have correctly set the timezone.

But it is not surprising to see users worried about the timezone change as until last year there were bugs that resulted in all sorts of issues. The good news is that Apple has fixed the daylight savings related bugs in iOS 5 or later so you shouldn’t see an issue this year.

In case, your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch did not move back an hour automatically, then you probably need to check the following:

  • Ensure that Location Services for “Setting Time Zone” has been enabled (Settings -> Privacy -> Location Services -> System Services > Setting Time Zone). You may have disabled it to improve battery life. If it was not enabled, then enable it and reboot your device.
  • Your iOS device is on iOS 5 or later.
  • You iOS device is not in airplane mode. If it was in Airplane mode, turn it off and reboot your device.

Let us know if your iOS device moved back an hour correctly today.

Thanks, I was wondering why it had not switched back. Location services for time zone setting was disabled. Enabled it and rebooted my iPhone and it is now showing the correct time.

I can confirm that my iPhone did change time automatically.

I can confirm that my iPhone 4S running 5.1.1 with Setting Time Zone disabled successfully changed clock back one hour.

I am running an iPhone 4 with iOS 6.0.1, and I never leave the automatic change to chance – so every year I change it to manual (BTW Setting Time Zone was DISABLED). This morning, I woke up at 0630 for a Navy function at 0800, only to discover it was 0730. Thanks for screwing me iPhone. The damn thing shouldn’t have changed when I am on manual time, it was BS – so no, Apple still has their heads up their asses!

My Iphone 5 with the latest IOS 6.01 did not update the time this morning. I had to go into setting and turn off automatic time and turn it back on for it to update. My sons android updated just fine.

My iPhone 4S did not change over. I had to go into settings, general, date/time, then turn set automatically off, then on again. My daughter’s iPhone 3 worked fine. Not good.

My 4s running 6.0.1 DID NOT change over. I restarted my phone and then it updated the time.

My iPhone 4 with iOS 6.0 did NOT update automatically although I had all the right settings chosen. When I went in and turned off the Setting Time Zone then turned it back on, then the time adjusted to the correct time.

Always interesting to me when the time changes, who has issues and who doesn’t. I’ve never had an issue, but I know lots of people who do. Seems that we’ve never figured out what causes the issues.

Jailbroken iPhone 4 running 5.1.1 on BaseBand 01.59.00. All settings for location and time on auto. Phone decided it was in Winnipeg, Manitoba. I live in Ontario!! Set me back 2 hours instead of one.

I have iPhone 5, version 6.1.2 and it did NOT adjust in the sprung 2013 to move forward 1 hour for daylight savings.
