What Should I Do First with My New Apple TV?

Apple TV 001

It’s taken far too long, but I finally got myself an Apple TV today. So, after I get it set up tonight…what should I do first?

Sure I know all the things I can do with an Apple TV (watch a movie, watch a TV show, stream a movie from my iTunes library, stream some tunes, play a game)…but what do you think is the first thing I should do?

Apple TV 002

I’m thinking of playing Metal Storm with the volume of my home theater turned up (yes I have a digital audio cable that will go right into the system for AirPlay).

Put it back in the box until a jailbreak is released! Mine has been been gathering dust for 4 months! :(

I like it for playing Real Racing 2 Multiplayer using the iPhone 5. The 4S or older, also the iPad 2 doesn’t work good. They all have a little lag that makes it just about impossible do play right.
iPhone 5, I am so happy to say, works great. I’m guessing the iPad 4 would be good too but don’t have one. I don’t know if that’s the first thing I would do but there’s not really a good answer to that question for that device except to jailbreak it.

I’ll have to see if I can convince my wife or neighbor to get it and play…I was thinking about multiplayer games.

What things I can do with the jailbreak?

What can I do with a jailbroken Apple TV?

The only thing you really need to do is install XBMC. From there you are opened up to a wealth of native features and plugins. You can pretty much pull content from any streaming source online, regardless of the format. You want it, there is probably a plugin for it.

If Apple do eventually allow apps to be installed, I’m sure there will be a Plex client released. This would make it the perfect media streamer without the need for jailbreaking.

Get Handbrake, convert all of those mkv’s to m4v.

Have Handbrake already…and converting a few ripped DVDs was one of the first things I did.

I own a jailbroken ATV2 with XBMC installed on it, great imo. Congrats, but I suggest you return the unjailbreakable ATV3, and you give yourself more options by picking-up an ATV2 (jailbreak it of course) instead.

I’d be happy if my ATV3 could run PLEX. Mine is gathering dust in the box also until this happens.

Just as an update, played some games, hooked it up to my home theater (needed a new TOSLINK cable thought), watched some movies streamed from my iTunes library, listened to music through iTunes Match (that is brilliant btw). One thing I did find what that while the Linksys Media Connection device lets some AirPlay traffic through, it chokes on games.

The first thing you should NOT do is update to 5.1. If you update you will only be able to use it on wifi. No LAN! And you might brick it with the update. First thing you should do is setup Netflix! Because the apple tv makes movies look better then anything else.
