Google Maps for iPhone Was Downloaded 10 Million Times in 48 Hours

How popular was Google Maps for iPhone? How about 10 million downloads in 48 hours popular.

Jeff Huber (the Google VP responsible for Maps among other things) announced in a Google+ post that in just 48 hours Google Maps for iPhone was downloaded 10 million times:

“We’re excited for the positive reception of Google Maps for iPhone around the world,” writes Huber. “Congratulations to the Maps Team on the recognition for the passion and hard work they poured into it, for this release and over the last 7+ years.”

That’s about 2.5% of all iPhones in case you’re wondering.

Pretty amazing. Now, here’s the question: which map app do you prefer? Apple or Google (or something else)?

I gave the turn-by-turn directions a try yesterday heading to a part of town where I almost always get lost, and I like the Apple version better. I found the directions easier to read at a distance (since my iPhone was stuck on my windshield). How about you?

    Big deal.

I like both map apps a lot. I just realized the hard (expensive) way that google maps doesn’t avoid toll roads. Is there an option in the settings that I am missing? If that’s the case I’ll stick with Apple maps since I have never had a problem with the app personally.

Yes, there is an option to avoid toll roads.

both crap.. the new google maps is slower then the previous iOS version

The Apple version of maps has taken me to the wrong location too many times now. I wish I could delete it. Google Maps has never failed me yet and knowing the way Google works future versions will only get better.

“I found the directions easier to read from a distance…” Maybe a bigger screen will help?

      Haha, ding!

Bigger screen doesn’t always mean larger text.

I like the apple version more the graphics are much nicer. The google maps doesn’t know if a road is a one way street and it tries to navigate you through it in the wrong direction. Apple maps has worked great for me in Michigan, Alabama. Florida and in between. I have never had a negative experience with it and I use it a lot.

I gave it a try and my phone was getting really hot, i also don’t like the voice. Apple version or Waze hasn’t given me any problems yet.

i downloaded google maps and have used it a few times but im gonna go with Apple Maps being better. Google maps cant even get the right side of the street my house is on. Im sure there will be updates to fix stuff like that but for me Apples Maps are more polished for my use

Do you really need GPS daily to go back home?
I would focus on which one gives me better and more results when I’m looking for some places.

Wish I could delete Apple Maps. It’s basically turn-by-turn GPS with Yelp APIs. It sucks when it comes to searching for ‘sounds-lik’ address. USA is better – rest of the world sucks on Apple Maps
