Jailbreak Tweak: MapsOpener Sets Google Maps as the Default Maps App

Now that Google Maps is available for iPhone we can all rejoice. Well, except for the fact that we can’t set it as the default Maps app. Unless you have a jailbroken iPhone that is. MapsOpener is a new tweak that allows you to get Google Maps as the default and is available via Cydia.

Here is a video from iDownloadBlog about it:

Thankfully, we knew it was only a matter of time before a jailbreak solution appeared to skirt around this issue. That solution is called MapsOpener — a brand new jailbreak tweak that forces maps links to open up in Google Maps…

Maps Opener is a free tweak through the BigBoss repo in Cydia.

Google has also released Google Maps SDK for iOS, which will allow developers to integrate the service in their apps. The SDK allows users to launch the Google Maps app as default from their app instead of Apple’s native Maps app using a URL scheme to complete a search, show a map or Street View imagery, or to see and navigate walking, driving and transit directions easily.

So we expect native Google Maps integration (without jailbreaking) coming to the apps soon, but until then check out MapsOpener and let us know how it goes in the comments.
