Rumor: Apple and TSMC Proposing a Chip Plant in Upstate New York

We know Apple wants to increase manufacturing in the U.S., how about a chip plant in Upstate New York? Rumors are that a “top secret” chip factory (well, not really “secret” anymore, huh?) could involve Apple.

Posted by AppleInsider from the Albany Times Union comes some clips from Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s interview where he all but spills the beans on the project:

“We’re shopping a lot of different companies at any given time,” Cuomo said. “Apple has a lot of competition, obviously, for their location. I don’t think they’re anywhere yet in the decision-making.”

According to the Times Union, the company behind the secretive project is “likely a major Apple supplier.” It’s believed that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. could be involved in the discussions.

It’s a perfect storm of rumors, really. Apple wants to build more in the U.S. plus Apple wants to (rumored) move away from Samsung for chip fab towards TSMC and TSMC wants to invest in the U.S.

Okay, sounds plausible to me. Maybe even probable. I would say that it would be well over a year before a plant of any scale or complexity would be cranking out chips though.
