Square Rolling Out Gift Cards with Passbook Integration in Square Wallet 2.5

If you’re looking for an easy way to gift a gift card to a store this Holiday Season and you don’t want to have to deal with physical gift cards (or can’t because of region or distance), Square is offering a new alternative using their Square Wallet App that pairs with Square Register.

The system works like this. You download the new version of Square Wallet—yes, there’s an Android version as well—and through the app pick a store, the amount, and a (virtual) envelope for the gift (and if you need to a day to deliver it). That’s it. The recipient gets the card in their Square Wallet app and can redeem in the store.

The store does have to have version 2.5 of Square Register as well for this all to work. Here’s Square’s video on the process:

What the video leaves out, that GigaOm points out in their story—Square Wallet offers gift cards with Passbook integration—is the integration with Passbook:

For iOS users, the interesting option is to redeem the gift cards via Passbook. The platform allows businesses to integrate tickets, coupons, boarding passes and gift cards, which show up automatically on the lock-screen when they’re ready for use. I haven’t been able to try this out but will update with some thoughts later.

Square has just arrived here in Canada and Square Wallet is due to arrive next year, so I’m looking forward to trying this out myself in the near future.
