Samsung Galaxy S4 to Come with Unbreakable Screen, Could cracked and broken smartphone screens be a thing of the past?

According to Samsung via Reuters, the Galaxy S4 will sport the world’s first unbreakable OLED display. Since Samsung is also making the screens, it’s a coup for them. Let’s hope we all get to enjoy this benefit sometime soon.

Given Apple’s growing rift with Samsung in the supply realm, there might be faint hope for the iPhone 6 or 7 having an unbreakable screen, but the info sounds cool:

Samsung’s Galaxy S4, which is scheduled to get an official release date sometime in Q2 2013, will apparently feature the world’s first unbreakable OLED display.

That’s quite a USP in and of itself. And while it does sound slightly odd in the cold light of day, it’s worth remembering that Samsung is currently leading the field in this type of display creation.

‘And, as smartphones increasingly look alike an unbreakable screen could be a big selling point for the Galaxy, which is battling Apple’s iPhone to lead the $200 billion plus smartphone market,’ reports Reuters.

Samsung’s Galaxy S4 is expected to have a larger 5-inch 1080p display that’ll pack in an eye-wateringly high pixel density of 441ppi. It’s also expected to feature a 13-megapixel camera, 2GB of RAM, NFC, and Android Key Lime Pie – although the latter’s inclusion depends entirely on Google’s release schedule. Via: Know Your Mobile

Can you imagine how this would change even cases? I have my phone in a case mostly to protect it from my own klutziness, what if I could just forego a case or just pick one that looked great, but didn’t protect much (because it didn’t need to). That would be cool.

Pretty neat stuff… However… I find it hard to believe there ins’t SOME WAY for Apple to get a hold of this or similar technology. We’ve seen again and again just how wide that rift ISN’T at times… perhaps they can ease the legal disputes some and both benefit from this advancement.

I would LOVE to see and iPhone with an unbreakable display and 400+ PPI resolution.

Then just buy the phone that has it! Why does it have to have the name Apple on it to be cool??

      • Drusenija

Some people actually prefer iOS over Android. The Apple logo on the back of the device isn’t the selling point.

      • Jeremy Taco Patterson

Because I have WAYYY too much time and money invested in my iMac, MacBook Pro, iPads, iPhones, and iPods to swap to an Android device because it has an unbreakable display.

Between devices, cases, peripherals and Apps, plus time spent learning and integrating everything to work together seamlessly, I’m pretty much dedicated to Apple, and in wouldn’t have it any other way.

      • Pacomacman

I’ve never broken a screen yet, and I’ve got 5 iPads and had 4 iPhones! Some people are downright clumsy… And besides, the touchscreen wouldn’t feel right if it wasn’t embedded in glass!

  • Wossuup

Ill just wait for the jailbreak

And then Apple will come out with another IOS version and lock you out for another year. Why not just buy the best phone with the best features? What has Apple done for you that makes you forget about your needs and wants. Bigger screen, better camera, unbreakable screen, Freedom to modify the phone you pay $100’s for to do the things you want the way you want it. Priceless.

      • NOT A FOOL

AND these are exactly what those stupid apple fans FOOLISHLY forgotten about. Can you imagine you can’t even use bluetooth freely on the stupid apple products???

        • Drusenija

I’ll admit, crippling the Bluetooth functionality on the iPhones has been annoying in the past, but on the flip side, I can count on one hand the number of times it’s actually inconvenienced me on one hand. As smartphones (any OS, not just Apple) become more ubiquitous, as well as more and more people having internet access on their devices, sending photos and such to other people is increasingly being done over the internet (email, Facebook, Picasa, etc)

Hardware features are only important if they’re important to the person buying the phone. Yes, if you want a bigger screen, then Apple isn’t going to help you. Samsung, HTC or any other number of Android phone manufacturers will though. That’s the beauty of choice. Likewise, if Samsung do release these unbreakable screens and Apple doesn’t have something similar, it’s something people who are accident prone will definitely consider, and some may switch to Android as a result. More power to them :)

But to assume Apple fans have foolishly forgotten about features is foolish. I buy my phones knowing the limitations of them, but more importantly, knowing what I plan to do with them and what my personal use cases are. For me, iPhone and iOS works, because they meet my personal use cases. So I stay with Apple.

Don’t bother replying with logical, thought-out arguments. ‘Droider fanboys don’t speak that language.

What Apple has done for me is provide me a group of devices that JUST WORK. Not counting my iMac and MBP, both of which have performed flawlessly since they came home, I have 9 iDevices. Among ALL of them, I have had to do ONE hard restart on my iPhone 4S, when I was trying to jailbreak it.

No battery pulls. No bull. They WORK. Any anything I’ve EVER wanted a phone, tablet or MP3 player to possibly do, they have delivered. If not “natively”, there LITERALLY is an app for that.

You sir are a sheep. I say this because of your attitude. I’m a huge android fan, but I appreciate all technology. This is why I read Apple news, WP8 news,BB etc. Those “Droider fanboys” you speak of….You are the equivalent. Never give up on intellectual conversation and arguement, dont be lazy with your opinion. Are you just here to post useless comments or attempt to be thought provoking. What Drusenija said, was an extremely well put arguement, and all you have to say about it is “Droider” crap??? Useless!

          • Jeremy Taco Patterson

MAYBE you need to read a little more closely. Drusenija DID make a logical, well thought-out reply in response to what can only be construed as an inflammatory, antagonistic post by what seemed to be a typical Android user. I simple stated there was no need for that, since the Droid fans here WILL NOT listen to logical arguments from iOS/Apple fans.

So MAYBE next time you’re looking to jump down somebody’s throat, you should make sure you KNOW WHAT THEY SAID and to whom they said it.

          • NOT A FOOL

Judging from your comment, I’m sure that you are not fall in the “foolish” category. You know the limitation and at the same time, you know what you plan to do with them…etc

Do you expect those who queued for days to just to get the product to think like you? My previous harsh comment was referring to these people. Sorry if it sounds too general… :)

FYI, I’m an iPhone and iPad user (not a fan) too and VERY happy with them except those limitations WHENEVER I need them. Also, I thought iPhone’s screen is hard enough that it’s non-scratchable in ordinary use and almost unbreakable too?
Hope my this reply answer Jeremy’s comment (inreply to yours) too… :)

          • bcsc

Solid response. Not much to argue with there.

  • Byron Swift

Nope, Samsung will patient that and Apple won’t have anything. If they copy that Samsung will sue them for 1 billion!!!

  • Kiwiholden

Not far off what apple said about the iPhone 4 screen.

  • Setzer

Sure, an unbreakable screen, what about the other components? Doesn’t seem too good if you have a working screen but the other components have already been damaged, or crushed if you’re really extreme.

  • paul

May have to ditch the iPhone then…………..

  • rohaianan

I have a Mac Laptop and Iphone 3gs used as a ipod touch. I just recently changed to Samsung S III. The Kies software by Samsung has been screwed up on my Mac for about 3 months. Funny how it works just fine on my pc. I would say if yopu own a Mac pc stay away from Samsung products.
