Full HD Galaxy S4 Could Steal Apple’s Thunder for the Next iPhone

Samsung AMOLED release schedule CES 2013

Samsung could steal some of Apple’s thunder when it comes to devices with breathtaking displays if rumors of the Galaxy S4 launching in the next few months are accurate. How breathtaking? How about full HD (1080p) and 440 pixels per inch breathtaking.

Believe it or not, it’s Samsung’s own CES booth that given the most credence to these reports, as The Times of India where the AMOLED, full HD (fHD), ~5″ screen was shown as part of the evolution of Samsung mobile screens (and coming in Q1 2013):

This screen in a Galaxy S4 would certainly be the screen to beat, especially if Samsung can pull off better battery life with its new Exynos processor:

Reuters speculated the Galaxy S IV may come with “a breakthrough unbreakable screen” which can be folded while BGR heard from its sources the phone has a five-inch screen, along with a 2GHz quad-core Exynos processor with 2GB of RAM and a 13-megapixel rear camera.

The screen is likely full HD (1,920-by-1,080) and at 440 pixels per inch would be a big improvement in pixel density over both the Galaxy S III’s 306 ppi and the iPhone 5′s 326 ppi screen.

Of course if rumors of “pixel quadrupling” are true, who knows what Apple might have up its sleeve for the next iPhone screen.

Sigh… And all good things must come to an end

Personally i don’t care about Samsung or any other brand, for me main things are applications and what phone can do. iPhone with it’s apps can do lot more than any other android phone. I don’t really care about design or the screen. For now iphone 5’s screen is perfect as well as samsung galaxy s3’s screen and ram, both phones are fast and both phones have perfect screen, but as i said before main things are apps and what phone can do. Don’t judge me it’s just my opinion

I won’t judge you but Samsung has the momentum and they aren’t letting go of it anytime soon. The iPhone software feels really old.

If you are talking about apps and what the phone can do, then iPhone is a real crap!
I bet you have not tried Android or even Symbian. Even my old Nokia 6670, a Symbian phone which i bought in 2004 can definitely do better than iPhone!

      • http://www.iphonehacks.com iPhoneHacks

Seriously? How about giving us some examples of what you can do with your Nokia 6670 that the iPhone cannot do. It sounds like you’ve never used an iPhone or just trolling.

        • Just sayin

          Themes. Just sayin.

You could also install Flash Player. Mix that with its expandable memory, and you have nearly everything Apple fans have been asking for. While not available for that exact phone, even Symbian allowed widgets. Sounds like a step above the iPhone to me. it’s still got more features and it was made in 2004!

            Flash player? HAHAHAHAAAH

        • NotAppleFan

Do you think I will waste my time visiting this site if I am not using iPhone? Oh, yes, I have an iPad 3 too.

I guess you are the one who never used an Android or Symbian phone.

You may want to ask, if I think stupid apple products are so bad, why am I using? Yes, why? Simply because I got them as FREE GIFT!

You want example? Sorry, I can’t give you. Too many to type!

Even a jailbroken iPhone can’t compete with my old Nokia 6670, period!

          run nes java emulator:)

Maybe you are right base on your personal view point.

Recently (from last year), it become hard to compare the Apps between Adroid and iOS. and I am sure, the quality & quantity of Apps for Adroid will pass the AppStore in 2013.
It means, Apps can not be a reason to stay in iOS.

i havent lost my faith in apple…the have always been a game changer

    • Nick

Agree apple will always be amazing no plastic phones

  • Pacomacman

Why do people get so giddy about more pixels that can’t be seen with the naked eye? Are people really that naive? Give me more performance over wasted GPU cycles any day, 300ppi is enough for me. 440ppi is higher than 4k TV resolutions, the madness has to stop or else Samsung need to find a pretty beefy GPU that doesn’t suck as bad as the Nexus 10!

    • http://www.facebook.com/thuong.ho.775 Po Wah

I bet if Apple were to come up with 450ppi in the future you would be like…APPLE = GOD right? You fanbois needs to stop hating on Samsung’s innovation

  • J

Apple have dropped the ball on their “innovation” – destroyed their customers faith with beta software and hardware and sell old technology at current day pricing. On top of killing the jailbreak scene.

I will be happy when my nexus 4 or galaxy handset is in my hand and my iPhone is traded in.

Apple must come out with WOW factor..

  • Sleepy

Is there anybody who has owned or used a Retina display that has wished for more resolution? So for people that are attracted to bragging rights, sure, 440ppi and 1080p are very appealing.

As for what Apple may have instore, I hope it isnt higher ppi. I just cant imagine a noticeable benefit and there would most likely be a sacrifice in both battery life and processing overhead. Apple has never, to my knowledge, competed for the best numbers on the box. I would actually be concerned if apple turned away from what has made it what is it today.

    • mkimid

it is not an issue about Need or No Need. With the bigger screen device such as 5″, if they use 720p, it is not enough to say as a retina display even it has 240~270ppi. so, They try to move to 1080p because of it is much easier than 1440p. and it is one of the standard resolution as FHD.
and, it is started from China already. not a new device.

How apple will resolve this issues,

      1. increase the screen size to 4.6 or 4.8″ to support FHD or equivalent such as 1920 x 1280 ?

      2. just keep the same as before ?

  • APPL

I’ve been using iphones for three years now, from the time I entered the corporate world. But personally, I’m rooting for Samsung. Sure, iphone has had a great head start but the gap just keeps getting smaller and smaller and it won’t be long before Samsung finally outruns Apple.

  • PimpDaddyWiteBoy

at this point, apple is becoming RIM. as in that they are getting more and more afraid to take risks and make actual good changes

    • mkimid

      1000% agree with you…
Apple start to write a same history which they have made with Machintosh

  • Parka

I’m a huge Apple fan and my whole eco system is Apple but some of the screen sizes and customization features on Android phones sound like they would be nice to have, I can’t say anything bad about Android because I’ve never operated or owned one but when I decided to get the iPhone 5 I hadn’t got everything I wanted #1 I wanted the screen wider not just taller, would like to be able to fit another row of apps width wise also, and no NFC chip in this edition which I also would of liked to had seen. Another thing if Apple had not made the screen larger I would of seriously had just kept my iPhone 4. If Apple hasn’t made their screens larger by the time my 2 year contract is up I may start thinking about trying out Android wether it be a Samsung Galaxy or Sony Experia, plus I really wouldn’t mind see in what else another OS could offer. I do absolutely love my iPhone 5 except the fact they put the head phone jack on the bottom, so annoying in so many situations, PUT IT BACK ON THE TOP APPLE !

I love the passionate arguements on here but ill just add 1 point. We all have a choice of what phone we want and theres no real one is better than the other its just what you find is best for you. The good thing about this samsung development is that is pushes the other manufacturers like apple to offer more to us consumers each time they release a new phone. If you compare todays models with those offered only 5 years ago there has been a huge leap in features and quality.
