Here’s What’s New in iOS 6.1 [Updatedx3]

ios-6.1

Apple has just released iOS 6.1 for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

According to the release notes, it includes features such as support for more LTE carriers, ability to purchase tickets through Fandango with Siri etc.

In this post, we take a look at all the new features and improvements in iOS 6.1, includes the ones that Apple hasn’t mentioned in the release notes.

iCloud Settings:

You will notice this as soon as your iOS device is upgraded to iOS 6.1. You’re now asked to confirm your Apple ID password for FaceTime and iMessage when starting your device for the first time after upgrading to iOS 6.1.

Purchase Movie Tickets using Siri:

If you’re in the US, then one of the major new features of iOS 6.1, is the ability to purchase movie tickets through Fandango with Siri.

You can simply ask Siri to find a specific movie, nearby theaters or desired showtimes. Siri then offers the option to “Buy Tickets” and launches the Fandango app for customers to complete their ticket purchase. You can add the movie tickets to Passbook.

Voice Dial Only:

Apple has added a new section called “Voice Dial Only” for Voice Control feature under Siri. Here, users will be able to select the language for the Voice Dial feature. It’s quite strange that Apple decided to update the Voice Control feature, especially since Siri has been around for more than a year now.

You can access it via the Settings app (Settings -> General -> International -> Voice Control -> Voice Dial Only section)

Support for more LTE carriers:

iOS 6.1 also brings LTE support for the following carriers:

  • USA: Alaska Communications, Alaska GCI, Bluegrass Cellular, C Spire, Cellcom, Pioneer Cellular
  • Canada: MTS, Sasktel
  • Puerto Rico: Claro, Open Mobile
  • Croatia: T-Mobile, VIPNet
  • Denmark: 3, Telenor, Telia
  • Finland: DNA, Elisa, Sonera
  • Greece: Cosmote
  • Hungary: T-Mobile
  • Italy: 3, TIM, Vodafone
  • Kuwait: Zain
  • Luxembourg: Tango
  • Philippines: Globe, SMART
  • Portugal: Optimus, TMN, Vodafone
  • Saudi Arabia: Mobily, Zain
  • South Africa: Vodacom
  • Switzerland: Swisscom
  • UAE: DU, Etisalat

Reset Advertising Identifier:

Apple has added a new Reset Advertising Identifier button. This button as the name suggests resets the Advertising Identifier so that future requests will return a different value.

To access it, launch the Settings app, tap on General, followed by About and then scroll down and tap on Advertising. Tapping on the button prompts you to either reset or cancel the reset request.

Tweaked Music Controls on the Lock Screen:

The music controls on the Lock screen (which can be accessed by double clicking on the Home button) have received a minor tweak in the look and feel department.

Report a Problem in the Maps app:

If you want to report a problem with the mapping data, it is a lot easier to do it in iOS 6.1. Apple has replaced the Report a Problem link with a prominent button. Launch Apple’s Maps app and tap on the on the curled paged at the bottom right corner of the screen. You will now see the Report a Problem button along with Drop Pin, Print, Hide traffic and List Results buttons.

New Welcome screen for Passbook app:

Apple updated the Passbook app with a new welcome screen. Apple seems to have also tweaked the text to reflect user’s location. It now reads “movie tickets” if you’re in the US and “cinema tickets” if you’re in the UK and so on.

The other minor change is that the welcome screen is shown every time you open the app, which should make it easier to look for apps that support Passbook. In the previous version, the welcome screen showed up only for the first time.

Update 1:

iOS 6.1 has fixed the Smart App Banner javascript bug in Mobile Safari.

Update 2:

Apple has also added a new search API to MapKit Framework for point-of-interest and location data, which can now be used by developers in their apps rather than relying on third-party services.

Update 3:

You can finally control music directly from your iPhone when connected to the car stereo in iOS 6.1. Check out this post for more details.

That’s it. We’ll update the post if we find any new features or improvements. If you’ve found anything interesting then let us know in the comments.

Another update: if you enable personal hotspot while on wifi you automatically disconnect from the wifi network and connect to the cell data network. Useful when in a wifi cafe with a bad connection or similar circumstances

  • gtsc

Modem firmware also got a massive update, from 1.02 -> 3.04.25 (A1429). Not surprising given the new number of LTE carriers worldwide.

What the heck is the advertising identifier? what’s it do? Why would I reset it?

  • JoSeph

When I first bought my iPhone5, I could not use FaceTime over cellular with att unlimited data plan, then last week I was able to use FaceTime over cellular on my at&t unlimited data plan prior to upgrading to 6.1 After I upgraded Sunday, that option is no longer available, when I try to enable it the pop up telling me to switch to a different data plan shows up. So if you have the unlmited data and are currently able to use FaceTime over cellular, you might want to think twice about upgrading for such small changes, I for one would rather have FaceTime over cellular back rather than be able to purchase movie tickets with SIRI.

    • http://twitter.com/MrAmato12 James

That isn’t the fault of iOS in my opinion. Because, the day AT&T announced they would allow FaceTime over cellular for LTE, I was able to use it on my UNLIMITED data plan….For one day. The next day, it gave me that same pop-up as you, calling in to 611 or go online to switch plans. I talked to a Rep from AT&T and they said it will switch from number to number–customer to customer depending on how the testing goes. So, I think you just got picked to be the lucky consumer for a bit, then they revoked it and upgrading to iOS 6.1 was just a coincidence on your part.

  • iphone 4 user

great battery improvement …. 100% to 99% for 4 hours in standby with wifi enabled … really great performance than ios 6.0.1 …..

    • iphone 4 user

also i rest all setting and refresh the battery ” drain it to 0 % and then charge it to 100% ” after the update

  • Zeno

voice dial makes sense to me, as Siri Voice dial doesn’t work at all for Dutch. So when I use my bluetooth carkit, I can’t use Voice dial at the moment when Siri is enabled. Great feature for me!

  • Derek

    Still no wifi fix

  • iWhat?

is there any way to undo this update?
since my iphone model doesn’t support the LTE bands in my country, it was really a very stupid thing when they disabled the ability to choose between (2G and 3G) and leave the phone to decide what network to use, by itself!

    thnx

    • http://www.iphonehacks.com iPhoneHacks

Unfortunately, it’s not possible to downgrade to the lower version, at least as of now. But you can disable LTE via the Settings app (General ->Cellular -> Enable LTE), if it is enabled, though it may not address the issue you have pointed out.

Are you noticing an issue due to it?

      • iWhat?

yes I know that I can disable LTE, but that’s doesn’t meanchange anything!! because my iPhone 5 model doesn’t support LTE in my country anyway.

well, since I’m living in a poor coverage location, I’ve had to change the type of network from time to time (by disabling 3G) , but not anymore! after this unexpected, unfair update!

now I have to change my place every time I want to use the internet, then I have to wait several minutes until the iPhone itself decide to change the type of network!!, most of time it doesn’t!! actually most of time I can NOT access to the internet at all -from the same usual location- after this update!!

        thanx

      • iWhat?

        Here what I have noticed today;

even at good coverage locations the network sometimes switched automatically to (2G) and STUCK on it!!, then there is no way to catch up (3G) except waiting your stupid phone to decide, or turning off cellular data so many times till you might get 3G!!

what is the most stupid thing in this issue!!
Apple already admitted on its website that “LTE may not be supported in all countries or all areas.”, even though they decided to push their update and replaced 3G button with LTE button, ignoring all possible users who may have a devices that doesn’t support this feature, and they still need having the ability to control their 3G2G connection

so guys if your iPhone 5 model doesn’t support LTE in your area, DO NOT ever ever ever download this update, you will just missed up your network!!

  • http://twitter.com/MrAmato12 James

Also another update I noticed, its a small aesthetic change. When you have an alarm, when it goes off on the lock screen, the notification looks slightly different, and I believe the snooze button was made a bit bigger, and put in the middle of the screen. It was noticeable enough for me to go, “huh?” when I woke up to it today while still half-asleep.
