The release comes after several unofficial Contra apps, which were simply wrappers around a Contra NES ROM, were wrongly approved by Apple’s App Store review team and taken down later.
Like every other retro game that is released to the App Store, Contra: Evolution has been tailored for modern gaming platforms with new characters, and obviously a higher resolution gameplay.
Here’s the game’s description from the App Store:
The epic ACT game is back in high definition! “Contra: Evolution” will bring players back to the most traditional shooting game through the authentic stage and story of 1988 FC platform Contra. Not only can gamers play original heroes, but also two new female characters with different attacking style. Moreover, the HD graphics and equipment system will provide a whole new experience in the world of Contra!
While there were some initial doubts about the genuineness of the game, given the multiple unofficial copies approved by Apple, Konami China’s official Weibo account has been talking about the iOS versions of the game.
Here’s a video of the gameplay:
We have no idea when, or even if, the game will be released worldwide. PocketGamer contacted a Konami about the worldwide release of the game, but the representative was “hesitant to comment.” For what it’s worth, the game listing does have English listed in its supported languages along with Chinese.
The iPhone version of the game is available for ¥12.00 (~$2), and the HD version for the iPad is available for ¥18.00 (~ $3).
