While the jailbreak process is fairly smooth when using evasi0n to jailbreak your iOS 6 device, there always will be a few cases that might not go as smoothly as you’d expect. We list some ways to troubleshoot your way through the problems you encounter.
Before proceeding forward, please keep in mind that the jailbreak process can take time. Commenters have reported times of as much as 18 minutes.
A lot of users are reporting this problem where the jailbreak seems to be stuck on the “Patching kernel.” It takes some time, so please be patient as it has taken as long as 18 minutes for some of our readers. But if it takes unusually long, try hard resetting your device. You can do this by pressing the Power button along with the Home button until your device reboots.
This is another stage that might take time, so wait patiently. Some commenters note that it could take as much as 10 minutes. And even then you find there’s no progress, just like the Patching Kernel issue, try a Power+Home button hard reboot.
While a lot of steps have been taken by repository owners and the evad3rs team to ensure that Cydia doesn’t come under heavy load, it happened anyways. People are reporting issues with logging into their accounts or seeing their “My Accounts” page. Saurik’s surely taking care of this situation from his side, but until then you’ll have to wait.
Update: Saurik’s taken care of his Cydia Telesphoreo repo, so you should be able to access it. If you still can’t, try setting your DNS to Google’s 188.8.131.52 servers and see if that works.
Jailbreak button greyed out
Some folks have noted that the evasi0n tool’s jailbreak button is disabled even when the device is connected. Make sure that your iTunes backup isn’t password protected. You can enable password protected backups again once you’re done with the jailbreak.
Weather app bug
On the iPad, an extra Weather app might appear after the jailbreak is done. Musclenerd has said on Twitter that this isn’t anything to worry about and the app’s always there, just that it’s hidden in a config file.
Some folks are also reporting that their Weather app is crashing after their device is jailbroken. While there’s no solution to these, we’re pretty sure the evad3rs team is working on a fix for this, presumably through a patch on Cydia.
Update: As it turns out, the patch will be available on Cydia, though there’s no specific time. More details here.
- Ensure that passcode lock on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch is disabled. It can interfere with the jailbreak process.
- Don’t run iTunes, Xcode, Tiny Umbrella or iPhone Configuration Utility while you’re jailbreaking.
- The evad3rs team notes that if you get stuck, it’s safe to restart the evasi0n tool and hard reboot the device, and try again.
- If nothing else works, you can always do a fresh iOS 6.1 restore and try the whole procedure again.
