A number of readers have informed us that the Voice Memos app is missing in iOS 7 beta that was seeded to developers last week.
The good news is that, it will be available in future iOS 7 beta release as a leaked image from the WWDC developer sessions shows the Voice Memos app on the Home screen of an iPod touch running iOS 7. It looks like the app will also get an all-new icon, which is not surprising.

As MacRumors points out, Apple has mentioned the lack of Voice Memos app as one of the known issues of first beta version of iOS 7.
Voice Memos – Known Issues
The VoiceMemos app is not available in this seed.
So don’t worry, the Voice Memos app should be available in iOS 7 when it is released to the public. It remains to be seen if Apple will include it in the next beta version of iOS 7.

Apple has seeded beta version of iOS 7 for iPhone and iPod touch to developers of the iOS Developer program, but it is yet to release the beta version for the iPad.
Few days back, we showed you how iOS 7 may look like on the iPad, however it had some discrepancies as it was essentially an iPhone version hacked to worked on an iPad simulator in Xcode 5.
MacRumors now point us to a YouTube video, in which a Russian user demonstrates iOS 7 running on an iPad. The user claims that it is an alpha version of iOS 7 running on the iPad. The 93 seconds video reveals the following tidbits:

Unlike the iOS 7 screenshots on the iPad, the video reveals that Notification Center and Control Center will not take the entire width of the screen like we have currently.
The Control Center quite rightly doesn’t have a toggle for the Flashlight, which was seen in the iOS 7 screenshots, instead it includes options for AirDrop and AirPlay.

The Control Center for the iPad also doesn’t have access to shortcuts for apps such as the Alarm, Calculator and the Camera like the iPhone Control Center.
The video also gives us a glimpse of what some of the redesigned stock apps like Music and Videos will look on the iPad in iOS 7. They look quite similar to the iPhone version.
It also shows how the 2x app mode will work in iOS 7.

There is currently no information available on when iOS 7 for the iPad will be released.
Let us know what you think about iOS 7 on the iPad in the comments below.

It has been a long time coming, but Microsoft Office is finally available on the iPhone. Strangely, it is not available on the iPad, and for both iOS and Android tablets Microsoft still recommends using the web-based apps for free SkyDrive accounts. The iPhone client can only be used by those with an Office 365 subscription, which costs $100 for an annual subscription. If you are a subscriber, you download and sign in or create an account. What you get is an application which is practically a direct port of the Office suite found on Windows Phones.

The Windows Phone look and feel echoes throughout the app, with Metro (the former name of Microsoft’s new design language) all over. However, the app still conforms to the usual iOS structure. Some have criticised the app already for a poor mixture of the two styles. However, the interface felt intuitive and natural to me, with the exception of text selection. Whereas iOS usually lets you select a word by long-pressing, this app requires a double-tap to highlight a word.

Unfortunately, the app has inherited the same limitations as the Windows Phone Office suite as well. It is not possible to create PowerPoint files, and Excel formulae cannot be copied and pasted. You’ll also find that OneNote is not part of this Office suite, though it has been available separately as an iOS app for quite some time. This also reflects the situation on Windows Phone – OneNote was part of the Office “Hub” in WP7, but separated into a separate app in WP8.

The iPhone Office suite has four tabs (or buttons) at the bottom of the screen, which reflect the different pivots of the Windows Phone Office hub panorama. Just as with the Windows Phone “Places” pivot, you may add SharePoint accounts. A shortcut to your SkyDrive and/or any of its folders can be added to the Places list for easy access, as well as SharePoint Online (part of Office 365 for business) and on-premise SharePoint.

One could be forgiven for saying that it’s too late for Microsoft to enter the market as there are more than enough alternative office suites, most of which have rich functionality and dependable file compatibility. However, there will always be some formatting that may not survive the round trip to a mobile client and back to the desktop. At least with Microsoft’s own client, you can be sure your original formatting will survive being edited on your iPhone. That being said, Office Mobile for iOS only offers limited formatting capability.

Word
This will probably be the most used segment of the mobile Office suite, and Microsoft has given it proportionate development time. It starts out in a read-only view, which I hoped would display a print layout. Instead, both the read and edit modes show a line-wrapped version of the document. This indicates that the app is intended for quick reference, rather than formatting.

Tables are displayed without line wrapping, which can lead to a degree of horizontal scrolling. Similarly, images are shown as in the desktop versions of Word, but they cannot be edited or removed nor can you add tables or images.

Despite these limitations, you can do all of the essentials such as changing the font size, color, highlight color, along with bold, italics, underline and strikethrough. However, there are no paragraph or heading styles available either – this is just the same on the Windows Phone version of Office.
Excel
Excel gives a clean representation of its desktop counterpart. If you were worried that you might not have access to a plethora of Spreadsheet functions, do not fear as there are more functions than you can reasonably count, or compare against the desktop client. Within a spreadsheet file, you are able to switch between sheets.

Excel doesn’t have a read-only mode like Word. After selecting a range of cells, opening the edit menu allows you to create a chart of use the “Autosum” feature. These require some explaining. Creating a chart creates a whole new sheet, rather than embedding in the current sheet. Additionally, the Autosum feature does not insert a sum formula into the spreadsheet. Instead, it brings up a window with various calculations on the highlighted range, such as sum, average, minimum and maximum. You are also able to add comments to cells and freeze ranges – the latter is useful for keeping headings visible while scrolling through large amounts of data.

PowerPoint
The presentation part of the mobile Office suite is far less functional than its siblings. It can display the contents of a file in a no-or-little compromised form. However, there are few editing facilities. It is not possible to create PowerPoint files, nor can you add or remove slides from a file. All you can do is edit comments to each slide, and edit text frames within a slide. Given the third party options out there, this is disappointing.

Conclusion
This is far from the all-singing all-dancing Office suite that you may have been dreaming of. It does what it does well, but there are severe limitations on what it can actually do. Given that most Office users have yet to take up the subscription option, many cannot even access it. This being said, the Metro-inspired design is a welcome break from the skeuomorphisms of iOS, and it will match even better with iOS7. I also find it disappointing that you have to be online to access your files. Even in this age of cloud computing, sometimes you need offline access to files, and as of yet Microsoft hasn’t provided that on iOS or Windows Phone.
If you’re rarely out of signal range, and you only need to read or make minor adjustments to files, then it makes perfect sense to use Office for iPhone, if you’re already an Office 365 subscriber. However, if you need to work offline or to have greater editing capabilities, then you should keep looking at the competition.

Apple hardly mentioned Apple TV during the WWDC keynote, but a beta version of iOS 7 for the device went live right after the keynote for registered developers. The update doesn’t have the UI overhaul seen in other iOS devices, but it does include iTunes Radio and a few other changes.
Apple calls it the Apple TV Software Update 5.4, and has included support for its new music streaming service called iTunes Radio. Just like on other iOS 7 devices, iTunes Radio will be free and ad-supported on Apple TV.

The other major change noticed is the addition of Conference Room Display mode, where the device displays simple instructions to wirelessly send what’s on an iOS device to an Apple TV via AirPlay.

When Apple introduced FaceTime over cellular feature in iOS 6 last September, AT&T only allowed customers with a Mobile Share plan to use the feature.
Since then it has been slowly expanding access to the feature to other customers.
In November, it expanded FaceTime over cellular access to any customer with an LTE device on a tiered data plan to use the feature.
Then earlier this year, it further expanded access to the feature to all customers on a tiered data plan. This meant that the only customers to be left out was AT&T customers with a grandfathered unlimited data plan.
However, last month, AT&T announced that unlimited data plan customers who have an iPhone 5 or any other LTE device will be able to finally use the feature in June, followed by any customer with the unlimited data plan by the end of the year.
AppleInsider now reports that AT&T has started activating FaceTime over cellular on LTE and HSPA+ devices for customers with grandfathered unlimited data plans.
So far, activation of the service has been verified in parts of New York, Maryland, Georgia, Louisiana, California and Hawaii. Voice and video quality is nearly on a par with the Wi-Fi implementation of the service, suggesting AT&T is not throttling those subscribers who choose to use the feature while on the go.
It is unknown to which, or how many, locations AT&T has rolled out the service, though the company appears to be targeting large metropolitan areas first.
If you’re an AT&T customer with grandfathered unlimited data plan, then please do let us know if FaceTime over cellular is working in your area.
Update:
Several readers with AT&T’s unlimited data plans have confirmed that FaceTime is working over cellular network. Thanks everyone for the confirmation.
Fierce Wireless also reports that they’ve received a confirmation from AT&T spokesperson.
“We’re simply doing what we said we would do, as we outlined in the original statement on this issue,” Siegel said.

It has been widely speculated that Apple will launch a cheaper iPhone later this year.
Folks at Japanese blog Macotakara have got their hands on a case manufactured by MGM, which they claim is for Apple’s lower-cost iPhone.
The case looks like an iPhone 5 case, but Macotakara points out that it is 2mm thicker. It also seems to have rounded edges indicating that it is not meant for the iPhone 5 as it has square edges.

Earlier in the year, iLounge had reported that according to their reliable sources, the low-cost iPhone will have 4-inch screen, like the iPhone 5, a bottom like the 5th generation iPod touch, and a shape that’s most similar to the iPod classic. So based on the photos and the video, the case seems to be for a device that matches that description.
The cheaper iPhone has also been rumored to be available in multiple colors and expected to be priced at $250 – $350. Apple is widely expected to unveil the cheaper iPhone alongside iPhone 5S in September.

ProTuber is a new application for YouTube, which offers more features compared to the native app such as ability to download videos for offline viewing, video quality selection, etc.

ProTuber offers the following features:
NOTEWORTHY FEATURES:
* Video Quality Selection (1080p, 720p…)
* Sign in to access your subscriptions, playlists, uploads and more.
* Share, flag, rate, add to watch later without the need of playing the video
* Easy search(videos, playlist, channel)
* Hide playing video into background and resume it back on right within the app
* Background playback anywhere, anytime
* Lock screen video thumbnail (similar to iPod’s song artwork)
ADVANCED FEATURES:
* File & Folder Management
* Manage playlists (rename, merge, move, copy, delete)
* Functions identically as a music player app
* Repeat mode: repeat all/one/none
* Support for Vimeo & Dailymotion
* Save to Camera Roll
* AirPlay support
* WiFi Sharing to browse, play from and transfer to your Mac or Internet TV
* Apple’s headphones remote support
* Remote Control Support
* DisplayOut Support
OTHER NOTEWORTHY FEATURES:
* Browsing videos by region
* Pre-set video quality for streaming
* Advanced category browsing
* Many selections of Sorting-by mode
* Easy video sharing to SMS, Google+, E-mail, Facebook and Twitter
* Universal app (support for iPhone & iPad)
The app is a universal app and is currently available for free in the App Store (regular price is $0.99). However, it also offers a $1.99 in-app purchase to unlock the full version. We couldn’t figure out which features are unlocked in the full version. We’ll update the post as soon as we find out.
We’re quite surprised to find an app like ProTuber on the App Store as some of the features such as ability to download videos, we thought is only possible using jailbreak tweaks such as ProTube and YourTube. The App Store app not only has a similar name as the jailbreak tweak, but its user interface also seems like a rip off of the native YouTube app.
So grab it while it is still available in the App Store as we won’t be surprised if Google requests it to be removed from the App Store.

I’ve been using the Neat app on iOS for some time, and I’ve found that I generally use it more often than my NeatDesk scanner. The ability to scan my receipts and business cards while at events is far more efficient than holding on to them all in a semi-organized fashion until I get home. The original Neat mobile app, coupled with Neat’s NeatCloud service, has really helped me adopt a paperless lifestyle far better than any other suite of apps.

Today The Neat Company released its new Neat mobile app and it takes the organization aspect of the app to a whole new – and more productive — level.
The enhanced version of Neat’s mobile app for both iOS and Android mobile devices includes many powerful capabilities such as:

Capture: “Scan” receipts, business cards and documents using the camera on your mobile device. This was present in the previous version of the app, but now you can immediately file them in the appropriate Neat folder rather than leting them languish in the inbox until you were able to get to a computer to move them.
Sync: Synchronize information captured with your mobile device automatically across your Neat desktop and cloud-based Digital Filing System.
Edit: In the new version of the Neat mobile app, you can revise data fields and add notes to receipts, business cards and documents right on your mobile device.
Search: Sort, filter and find the items and folders in your Digital Filing System based on date, keyword or item type. This is huge for when you need to isolate receipts from a trip that you want to add to your expense reports or trying to remember the name of that person you met from a company’s name that you do remember.
Organize: Another new feature allows you to add, edit and move folders within your Digital Filing System remotely making it simple to quickly locate and access your information.
Share and Collaborate: This is a big one, especially if you want to get things to your bookkeeper or file expense reports more efficiently. Now Neat’s app allows you to share any document or folder with anyone and comment back and forth on items for easy collaboration.
Report: Capture receipts, create and submit expense reports – right from your mobile device.

I’ve been putting this new app through the paces during my recent travels, and if you were hesitating on going paperless because there wasn’t a system that was both simple and omnipresent for you to use then Neat has you covered. The mobile app’s OCR capabilities – coupled with Neat’s own verification service called NeatVerify® – are incredibly accurate, and I was able to create a folder for my trip and file things in that folder quickly and easily. Being able to take care of these things during travel downtime (in the hotel room, while in transit) means I can focus on what I’m meant to do at the event rather than worry about if I’ve got all of the paper I’ve acquired dealt with accordingly.
As for how I use Neat’s new mobile app, I make sure receipts are scanned as soon as a convenient time has been determined on my end. For example, restaurant receipts are scanned at the table after payment and transportation receipts are scanned as soon as I return to the hotel room that evening. I don’t want to rush doing the scanning, but I want to make sure it’s all been done before I return home. Even when on a plane, I’ll scan errant paper – mainly business cards – because when my device reconnects with the Internet then the scanned paperwork is synced to the NeatCloud (which, in turn, syncs up with my computer at home). I’ve tried to be as routine about this as possible – something that helps make the paperless lifestyle easier to adopt and maintain – and the Neat suite of paperless apps and products allows me to do this as seamlessly and as friction-free as possible.
Neat has really upped the ante with this new version of its comprehensive mobile app. When you use it alongside NeatCloud, you’ve assembled one of hte finest paperless systems on the market today. And less paper in your way means more time in your day.
For a complimentary 30 day free trial of Neat’s new mobile app and access to NeatCloud, visit www.neat.com/products/neatcloud. The mobile app can then be downloaded by searching for “Neat” within the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store.

Back in May of this year, NEC unveils the “world’s first” liquid cooled smartphone. Forget about pumps and radiators, this is a smartphone we’re talking about after all; it uses heat pipe technology. The principle is really simple to understand. Fill a metal tube up with a liquid, usually a mix of water and ethanol. Attach one end of it to something hot, like a CPU, and the other end to something cool. When the CPU gets hot, the warm liquid travels towards the cool element thanks to entropy, and then the cool liquid comes to do its job.

According to DigiTimes, tier one smartphone brands are investigating this technolog and might introduce it in their products as early as Q4 of this year. What does “tier one” mean? Companies like Apple and Samsung, the big boys.
Personally, I’d rather have chip companies make more power efficient chips than to see smartphone makers start adopting exotic cooling solutions. What’s next, a phone with an exhaust vent? We’ll see 20 nanometer chips come out during the first half of 2014, so here’s hoping they’ll help alleviate any heating issues.
